university + steam

Hallo, so ive just got to uni and obviously the in-room internet connection blocks P2P and online games and such. Is there any way for me to play half life 2 on offline mode cos its really getting on my tits that steam wont connect due to bandwith retrictions the uni has put on.

Does anyone know how to play hl2 offline, without having to be connected to steam through the internet? there MUST be a way

This of course means i cannot connect to steam, THEN select offline mode. I cant get on steam itself at all.

cheers

Well, here's the simple way, the way I do it. Disable internet. Start up steam. Click 'Run in offline mode'. Done! Go select Half Life 2 and play some single player smile.gif

yup, tried that, still doesnt start up steam, just says error connecting to steam network, even if i try to get onto offline mode. Thanks anyway, any other ideas people?

bah got through all the millions of posts at the steam forums and

NOTE: Many Colleges, Universities, Schools and Large Corporations are now actively blocking ports to prevent virus, trojan and Internet worm problems as well as to prevent misuse of their networks.

If you are having problems and you are on one of these complex networks that are intentionally blocking ports required for Steam to work then you may not be able to connect to Steam and play.

About all you can do is to take the Steam required port list to the network administrators and ask them if those ports are blocked.

Many of these networks will unforunately also mask your IP address and so may prevent Steam from working. This is a different problem from port blocking and is related to Proxy and / or NAT translating twice.  For example, there might be a router doing NAT in your Dorm that then feeds another NAT translating router that services one part of the Campus.

If this is happening then you probably won't be able to run Steam over the Campus network.

looks like im facked, which means ive got to use some shady means of playing it, some kind of program which wont make me need steam to play. Anyone knows anything about this, pm me some details ph34r.gif

Just remember that if you somehow get a crack, make sure to remove it so when you connect to Steam it doesn't ban your account.

What that is doing is asking for you to connect. When it says there is a connection error, it has to be online to collect your game list. If you cant connect with the net on then you can play it pretty much.

It needs the net to get your game list so you can play it. After you manage to connect to steam if you do, then you can play it in Offline Mode.

Find another way to connect. Take your computer to a friends or use your mobile phone.

Just so you can connect then select offline mode.
