Smurf You
Everytime this topic comes up I give the same answer. However this time shadow is a pretentious cocksucker so I'll just quote him. Eddie Hazel's solo on Funkadelic's Maggot Brain gets my weiner pretty big.
villarule
Just about every note that Gilmour has played Songs like another brick in the wall part 2, sorrow, comfortably numb etc.. have great solos, intro to sorrow just rocks so very hard. Plus theres the many great ones by metallica, fade to black, one etc... Plus, blues players such as Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Kent DuChaine can play like not many other people, just so great. NorthwestRastafarian
Jimmy Garrison's improvised bass solos on John Coltrane - Live In Japan's 60 minute set of 'My Favorite Things', as well as Trane's sax itself, his interplay with Pharoah Sanders is just spectactular. 'Maggot Brain' by Funkadelic - the whole song is a wicked funk/blues/rock guitar solo by Eddie Hazel that absolutley puts Jimi Hendrix at his best to soulful shame. Rick Wright of Pink Floyd, with Claire Torry doing the vocals of Great Gig In the Sky... chilling, immaculate, omneisent music. NorthwestRastafarian
I was about to post a really smartass response about that whole nylon-string guitar pattern at the beginning being a lick, but as I was listening and typing, I heard the solo in the middle of the song, and f**k me if I didn't remember then that it was one of Hammett's best solo's since their early years. I really stopped liking metallica after Ride the Lightning, or maybe master of puppets, though. You can't get better than [Ride The Lightning] in that genre. Everything after Master of Puppets, and without cliff, was like treading water. Edited October 3, 2005 by NorthwestRastafarian

darthYENIK
My friend from ohio's best friend's solo at this live show he has on his Ipod. I don't know the song or the band for that matter. All that I know is that it is in-f*cking-sane, all off the top of his head, and the best part is he was blind stinking drunk, and had no idea what he was playing. But no words can totally explain how awesome the solo is. I've only heard it when I was high though, so it was way more intense probably.
