Best bet could be that the disk is stuffed. Try with other disks. If it still has the same problem, it may be the drive that is stuffed.

What is your D: by the way? 3 and a half floppy?

What version of Windows exactly?

Try uninstalling the drive and restarting the system.

@Chalkstar2188

3 and a half floppy?? Is that meant to be a joke or something? Because it wasn't funny and it didn't even make sense.

He seems to be wondering what kind of drive would register as D...

It's probably a CD Drive Chalkstar, and it usually is on almost every computer.

Anything specific happen to make the drive stop working recently?

Exactly means what ServicePack is installed

Is it XP (no SP), XP SP1 or XP SP2?

No I mean go into the Device Manager select the drive in question and click Remove.

You've tried more than one disc in that drive, right?

What kind of disc have you tried?

Try DVD movies, software CDs (like games), audio CDs, CDRs.

Just for grins try booting into Safe Mode and see if there is a difference.

If after all of this if the drive still doesn't show the discs correctly, then do the DeviceManager->Remove that I mentioned above.

What about the other things I said to check out?

Can you either copy&paste what the troubleshooter said or take a screenshot of it?

this is what the troubleshooter says.

Does Windows support your hardware?

To find out whether your hardware is supported by Windows XP, check the Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) at the Microsoft Web site.

Notes

If you follow this link, when you return to this troubleshooter you will have to start over from the beginning and answer each question as you answered it initially.

If you do not have Web access, contact the manufacturer of your device to find out if it is compatible with Windows XP.

Some hardware on the list might need updated drivers in order to be compatible with Windows, and you might be able to download these drivers using the HCL.

If your hardware is not on the HCL, Microsoft cannot guarantee that it will work with Windows. However, the manufacturer of the hardware might have an updated driver that will allow it to work with Windows. Contact the hardware manufacturer for further assistance.

Is your hardware on the HCL?

Yes, my hardware is on the HCL. Or, I have already contacted the manufacturer and installed updated drivers, but I still have a problem.

No, my hardware is not on the HCL. I will contact the manufacturer for further assistance.

I want to skip this step and try something else.

Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)

That's what it is. It's the the list of hardware that's been tested and is known to work on Windows. If it says your device is working properly, I'm 99% sure it's on the HCL. Here's the link if you want to look yourself though.

Go to the company's website of the drive you have and get some updated drivers.
