IRC #gta on gtanet needs rescue

Hi.

After being banned from #gta several times for not breaking rules, just talking I decided to turn to the people at GTA Forums for help. I was quite discusted of how this channel was run, and how hostile the regulars were within it. The regulars you can't do much about, but the ops ban without reason or consequence or ban because of suggestion.

None of the great contributors of the modding community ever seem to be in there, it is just run by people that make superfluous posts in the non serious parts of gta forums which is quite alarming.

I understand this topic doesn't warrant a full attack on #gta, however I just feel it misrepresents everything that GTA and it's modding/pc community is about. And Im sure a lot of other irc users feel the same.

I see other new-comers get flamed and then banned for standing up for themselves in the slightest. In my opinion either the channel should change its name or recover from this foul state.

If theres any mods or people that have control over this channel or are linked with it in some way please look into how the channel is run, and try and take necessary action.

@topic starter, you do realise that #gta is an OFF TOPIC chat channel, right? There are 104 different channels on the GTANET IRC server, there is nothing stopping you making even your own IRC channel on the GTANET server. Don't attack a channel and it's ops for abusing their powers or whatever you're complaining about because you can't follow their rules that they have set. If you don't like it, go somewhere else

You've got to be kidding. Doesn't it make sense that the general meeting ground of the network is filled with members from all areas? Sure, #gta is probably filled with members from the mentioned areas, but it's not just them. Take note of spookie (op) and Opius (half-op). Now, they're just two names. I think it's fair to say they're contributors to the modding community. As well as Luke (also op), Camaro d00d, XcR, and several others that pop in from time to time. Not to mention the others who make up the network and affiliated fan sites. shibby/neop (GTASkins), squiddy (GTAReactor), Jordan (PlanetGTA), adamcs, and many others that don't come to mind right away.

 

I honestly can't explain it any clearer than that, it just takes common sense to figure out why the people that are in there, are in there. Don't like it? Don't go there, simple. You might want to take note of #gtamodding. You might also want to do a /list next time you drop in to check out the other, more specific GTA modding channels.

This just sounds ridiculous to me. Give me the logs John (PM if you wish) and I'll personally see into these banning for no reason events you speak of, and I'll personally see how we can sort them out for you.

My gosh, I agree totally. #gta's ops are as a rule, all arseholes, who like to ban for personal entertainment and pleasure.

 

On a more serious note, I've been away for one and a half weeks now thanks to British Telecom's engineers f*cking up my telephone line and taking a few million years to fix it - since I've not been around though, I have absolutely no idea which ocassions you're talking about, so if you'd like to provide some logs, that would be helpful.

 

IRC is different to the forums, that's obvious, I'm sure you're aware of that. It's also managed differently, the whole way that the IRC works is basically by suggestions and discussions. Normally, any suggestions that are made to us are discussed, whether in public or not, there's at least 4 staff channels that I can think of that cover the various different types of people running the network and it's official channels.

 

Here's a quick run down of how GTANet is managed then:

Myself and TwoZero effectively come at the top of the pyramid, for historical reasons. Most servers have a network administrator, and more than one ircop, all of which have input on the network's settings and management, links, delinks, publicising etc. GTANets' website staff input on how the network works, indirectly in some cases, directly in others. #gta, #gtamodding have their ops and their half-ops, their admins etc - all of which have a say. MTA get a say in rule changes, server links/delinks etc. SA-MP's team are kept informed and get to provide input as their channels provide a large number of our users.

 

Do you think that list there is kind of complex? Here's the list of names:

 

TwoZero, Luke, DigitalD, spookie, mikechml, jllr, eggburt, Jordan, FiShMaStEr, GhostofCT, neop, Dalpura, Trows, Camaro_d00d, kyeman, Kryptos, ModelingMan, The MTA Bunch (IJs and Blokker), Alfresco, Opius, LinuxMan, rams.

 

Long list eh?

 

So, you're complaining about #gta, I understand that - but who do you expect to make the changes to how #gta is run? The channel doesn't have one superior authority really, unless you name the names of who you want to complain about and why, nothing will happen.

 

I'm open for suggestions, feel free to make some - constructive comments that is, in other words, how you would like us to deal with certain situations. The people who don't run #gta but regular it can be hostile, I admit that. So how do we tackle that? Or are we all adult enough to take insults when they're thrown at us?

Thanks for your feedback and information guys, some posts more helpful than others. Sorry for posting in the wrong forum etc I wasn't aware there were network forums.

 

The main reason I started this topic is because I felt #gta misrepresented the character and behavior of the GTA community. Other channels and networks have been pointed out and I shall try those for my GTA modding discussions/questions in the future. I understand its difficult to believe just one guy's irc experience, and/or even care about it. I shall try and attain logs from another user as I don't log myself. And I will no longer visit this channel.

Other GTA new comers and community members will just have to learn the hard way when typing the obvious /j #gta.
