Well, myself and maws were just chatting on msn, and we didn't know the difference between the two. So could someone maybe explain to us what the difference between the two of them are, because it's completely stumped us.

I read that hip-hop is made up of four things, I can only remember 2:

 

Rap music, graffiti art. Maybe another one is RnB music.

hip hop has 5 elements, b-boying(breakdancing), emceeing, dj-ing, graffiti, and beatboxing(most people don't recognize this as one though). it has nothing to do with big wheels on your car, or ig necklaces or any of that garbage.

 

rap is just the music, and hip hop isn't really a genre of music, i don't think.

Ah k. There seems to be a lot of confusion between rap and hip-hop as music genres. Most people I know in Australia regard hip-hop as a different music genre to rap, but they haven't been able to tell me exactly what it is. Now I think it's probably because they're just confused.

Some people say folx like Common or Mos Def are Hip Hop.They are cuz they rap.Common is as Hip Hop as Game.But real Hip Hop is defined by goals and reasons.....Some people have a love for the Hip Hop culture and some look at it as business.I guess it depends on what context its conversated in....

I remember there was a big discussion on a site about splitting up the "Rap/Hip-Hop" section into two separate sections, with the "Rap" section revolving more around mainstream artists and the "Hip-hop" section revolving around alternative hip-hoppers and underground cats. I see where they were coming from, but it's both inefficient and really doesn't make sense.

Any rap song you hear is of the Hip Hop culture.Hip Hop is a movement,a lifestyle,a way of life.It is not a music.The music of Hip Hop is rap also called Hip Hop music.R&B is not Hip Hop,R&B has been around way before there was any Hip Hop.

Jesus Christ. R&B has absolutely no relation to hip hop, or rap for that matter. It stands for Rythym and Blues, and does not correlate with hip hop, you probably only confuse them due to the huge African American stereotypes associated with both.

Hip-Hop is a culture, a way of life. I could say it's black culture, but since Hip-Hop has influenced the entire world, it's not only part of black culture(Ex: Eminem is part of Hip-Hop culture, is he black, no). Besides, hip-hop isn't really "black" as some racist fu*ks say. You want African culture, go to Africa and talk to its citizens, that's African culture. Hip-Hop culture isn't only for Africans, it's for any race that lives that way of life. Rap is one part of the culture and so is R&B. There are other things that are part of the culture, such as break-dancing, graffiti, the clothes (because every culture needs a style) etc...

No, you're the stupid one. Hip hop or rap have nothing to do with race. That's like saying basketball is a black sport, because the majority of players are black. It's just heavily influenced by the majority of mainstream rappers being black. If you saw how many white artists there are, it would be more obvious. I would say most of the best emcees are infact not black. I won't go into who right now though.
