Fast families rejoice! Mitsubishi has revealed a wagon version of the Lancer Evo IX

By TIM BRITTEN 12 September 2005

advertisement A keen to be seen Mitsubishi has just announced a new wagon version of its Lancer Evolution IX high-performance 4WD sedan.

Available in both manual six-speed (GT) and five-speed automatic (GT-A) form, the Evo IX wagon uses two stages of tune to suit the characteristics of the transmissions.

The manual-transmission GT engine produces 206kW at 6500rpm and 392Nm at 3000rpm, while the GT-A, with a smaller turbocharger, is slightly less ambitious with 200kW at 6500rpm and 343Nm at 3000rpm.

The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder 16-valve intercooled and turbocharged DOHC engine drives through the manual or auto gearboxes to a full-time 4WD system incorporating Mitsubishi’s active centre differential to – in the manual GT - a mechanical limited-slip rear differential.

The Evo wagon uses the same inverted MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension as the Evolution IX sedan and is fitted with Brembo ventilated disc brakes. The wheels are 17 x 8JJ Enkei alloys finished in bright silver rather than dark grey and wearing the same 235/45R17 tyres fitted to the evolution IX sedan.

The evo is given an extensive structural toughening up to create what Mitsubishi says is "a lightweight and very stiff station wagon body". The massive tailgate spoiler is from the Lancer Wagon Ralliart, while an aluminium bonnet helps reduce weight.

The interior features modified (for easier access) Evo IX Recaro front seats and a Momo steering wheel as well as alloy accelerator, brake and clutch pedals.

The Lancer Evolution Wagon is to be produced in a limited run of 2,500 (GT and GT-A combined total), with production due to cease at the end of December this year.

That thing just looks plain ugly, look at the rear! I'd take a sedan Evo anyday.

I like it. Always loved the Subaru wagons too. The original Subaru Legacy was actually quicker than then original Impreza, then you have all that boot space for alsorts.

You have to think about this. A lot of ppl use cars these days and probably run a business where they need a van etc to cart sh*t about but they could afford a sports car if it was practical. This just meets in the middle. You can get all your work gear in it and blast up the motorway fast as f*ck during the week, and then you can still take the kids to the beach on the weekend.

You can't judge its looks from those small pics, you gotta see it in the flesh.

I've seen a normal lancer wagon, and i'm not too fond of it. I guess i'd get used to the look anyway smile.gif I'd prefer something like the Subaru's rear wagon designing to Mitsu's. Not a bad car though, I bet it would go!

I like it, I've also had a soft spot for wagon versions of AWD sedans for ages like the WRX Wagons and the Legacy.

quackaddict I love that spoiler sad.gif

I can see hundreds of thease on roads now I admit it's a good idea but I just don't like emblems of racing turned into common grocery getters.

Though I gota admit it lookes quite snazy

Trueno_Drifter86 Hopes Mom gets one for next car

I like the notched back (Subaru Impreza Wagon style) or semi-slanted (Dodge Magnum style) rear end. The lights look like they belong of a Public Transit Bus or a Volvo.

Now all Subaru and Mitsubishi need to do is produce 2 door versions similar to the old 22b.

This car would be fine in my books... If the back end didn't look terrible. The back end from the Legnum would look much better on the Lancer than the one they created.

It really reminds me of Mitsibishi's other famous wagon, the Legnum:

If only the rear of the lancer wangon looked like that! The traditional wagon lights are too plain and boring now. That Legnum has to be one of the most sexest wagons around smile.gif

Hmm yeah the lights on the Lancer look a bit odd and also the flat back on it makes it look like the Honda Oddysey. Just wish there were bigger pictures of this Wagon.

It looks like a hearst(sp?). Those cars that transport dead bodies from funeral homes to cemetaries.

This is very nice. I second Maj on that snowy/AWD thing. It's like the impreza but looks a lot better. Plus, it's fun to mess around with a wagon on a racetrack.

Signature soon.

Evo? Wagon? wtf?

odd idea in my opinion but i'm sure it'll sell.

Howso? You've got the WRX Wagon along with the Legacy series of wagons. Makes sense for the Lancer EVO which has always been the nemisis of the WRX.

Not that odd at all. (haven't noticed your reply neo)

Well, Impreza Wagon, Legacy wagon, Volvo 850 T5 R AWD, Volvo V70R, Mercedes E55AMG, Audi RS4, RS6, RS2 were made wagons. For the RS2 there were only wagons made even. On the japanese market, Nissan Staega Nismo aswell...

Signature soon.

Yeah...the E55 Wagon has to be up there on my favorit car list.

In my Road&Track mag they have this pic of 2 kids in the back of the car in the 2 rear facing seats screamin in fear and/or excitment.

Here...I made a sig out of it a while ago.

I quite like the idea of an Evo wagon, guess it'll be like a successor to the libero GT, only alot more hardcore.

Yeah okay, that's an awesome idea. A 16 year old beginner driver in an Evo. What's gonna die first? the car or the driver, or both?
