Driving Force Pro: pedals dont work when in car

I tried my Driving Force Pro with my copy of Vice City to see if it worked and all of the buttons were configurable but when i wanted to assign an axis to something it never recignized it, when at the defaults the wheel will control the turning of the car but when i wish to accelerate with pedals it will not do it, however when i am outside of the car when i press one of the pedals ill move backwards or forewards depending on the pedal i press. I would like to know if there is any other way of modifying the controls on Vice City manually besides the ingame options.
