Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 Released

Recommended Posts

The long waited Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 has been released.

And even though it's Beta 1, there is a lot to come for. Not on the interface, as it will remain just how you wanted it to look. However, I must warn you. Basically all your extentions disappear. Excluding adblock, and some few.

Also, a new amazing thing, Firefox is much faster than ever before. It also takes a lot less time to start up, which was one of the main things that bugged me about Firefox before.

Faster page loading, faster start up. Great stuff. But since it's Beta 1, it's probably not 100% stable. wow.gif

It might be loading faster because all of your extensions aren't loading colgate.gif

I was considering that myself. But I then I tried to disable all my extention from the 1.0.6 version and even though it was slightly faster. It was still much slower than the 1.5 Beta 1.

Just installed it.

Seems much faster (both page loading and starting up). We'll see what happens when my extensions all get updated though.

The extensions that work in it (for me anyway):

Gmail Notifier

BugMeNot

AdBlock

FlashGot

I'm also optimistic about this 'Website Reporter' thing. From what I could gather it seems like an extension that you can use to report non-FF compatible websites. Haven't tried it yet though.

In the options they've added a new 'Tab', erm, tab. Same basic funtion as the previous tab settings though. They did add one feature (that I'm sure wolf will love) where you can drag tabs around to re-order them. I'm liking that a lot.

Overall, good update by them I'd say. Worth a download if you can live without some of your extensions/themes for a bit.

Gmail Notifier, Adblock, and Bugmenot all worked fine for me. however, I uninstalled it shortly after because it didn't solve my quick search sorting problems, which I then fixed with named folders, but haven't reupgraded.

The program ran a lot faster, however was slower on startup and slowed my computer significantly when I closed it.

Interesting...I found it quite the opposite. Startup and exiting was much faster for me.

What's that?

They skipped from 1.06 to 1.1 initially, or planned to. But then they decided there were too many significant changes in the program, so they decided it meritted going up to 1.5.

Also, it will backup your bookmarks.html, and it should still use the original anyways.

Well it seems a bit faster to me, both browsing and startup/shutdown alike. ForecastFox was the only extension that didn't work, but everything else is alright. Seems good, thanks for letting us know.

Question: Does anyone know what it takes to update extensions to the latest version?

I miss my lil ForcastFox weather sad.gif

EDIT:

Ok, I just found the best extension evar. It's called Nightly Tester Tools. It isn't fool-proof, but it lets you use extensions/themes that aren't compatible with new versions yet.

Simple Instructions:

  1. Download and Install extension
  2. Close/Reopen Firefox
  3. Open your extensions menu
  4. Right click on the extension you want to convert and click 'Make Compatible'
  5. Restart Firefox
Now, this won't work for all extensions (or so I've heard). It can also screw up your FF profile, so use at your own risk. I suggest going through and converting your extensions one by one so if one screws up, you know which it is and can disable it.

Here are the extensions it converted for me:

  • gtafcode
  • ForcastFox
  • iFox (theme)*
  • Feedview
  • Super DragAndGo

*Note: It didn't fully convert the theme (the page buttons are still default and some of the spacing is off), but for the most part it worked.

Fozzy Fozborne

I downloaded it, it went through the entire process, then it said "looking for updates for extensions" (the only one I have is the GTAcode one), then it just stopped, I let it go for 10 minutes, then came back, it still hasn't done anything. So, I click X, and try to start it. Firefox comes up, but it looks like this forever. -> user posted image

BTW, I have Norton Internet Security 2005, and I allowed it. Any ideas, the old ones worked.

Sorry about that, I just used system restore to restore to before I installed it, and now

1.0.6 works again. I'll wait for the official release of 1.5.

Has anyone else experienced random crashing with the BETA? Obviously I expected it to be not so perfect being BETA and all but just wondering if its just me who is getting them?

Wow, it is a lot faster.

@GTA3Freak-2001, I've not expirenced any random crashes, it crashed a few times when starting it for the first time.

For a beta, this is damn good. Definately looking forward to the 1.5 release.

I'm using it as standard now, however, I'm having the following problems:

<input> tags with type="file" is not displayed correctly, as the button saying "browse" and the "input window" should have the same size together as an <input> tag with type="text".

For some reason, flash is actually played, but none is displayed. I can hear the flash, but not see it. I don't know if I can click the "links"/buttons in the flash, since I haven't tried.

I think there are more, but I will list them when I get there.

I'm pretty sure that's a problem with Adblock. Go to the Adblock options and un-check "Obj tabs" and all should be well.

Is it just me or does the middle mouse button no longer work?

I can scroll using the mouse wheel, but the middle button drag-scrolling just doesn't work. dozingoff.gif

So, when the official release is out, most of the extensions will still work, correct? I'm sure I probably have a number of extensions that won't work for it, as they're a little on the less-popular side.

Mine seems to work fine.

The authors should update them. Check the official websites for each of them to see if they've been updated. Otherwise look back on the first page and I posted a link to the "Nightly Tester Tools" extension. It basically tricks FF into thinking the extensions support the current version you have.

Well, the problem with that, is that FireFox just plain won't install extensions for me if they're unsupported.

Well, at least Gmail Notifier won't, anyway...

That extension adds an option (a check box on the install dialogue) to install the extesion as compatible.
