You can't rate any topics?

Hm. Weird.

I know that you can't rate your own, but... oh well.

You can't rate your own topic as Yuck mentioned, but try changing the board setting and the skin around to see if it will fix it self some how.

Also, it would be more helpful for us to help you if you provide a screen shot showing us that their is no topic rating since it is a bit hard to believe you. No offence, just in general.

SloStenRacing

I am sure he either tried rating his own or tried rating one twice. Maybe even forgot he rated one already and tried doing it again. Either way you can't do it.

It's also worth pointing out that if enough people have already posted in that topic then your vote won't visibly change the number rating.

Has anyone noticed that it generally only ever takes one person to say "/me rates topic bad" or "/me rates topic good" for every one else rate it?

No one ever does until someone makes a point of it and reminds them of the feature.

/me already rated topic bad.

I generally rate everyone's topic good, except when it's already low.... then I jump on the bandwagon and rate it bad, too.

After I read about the algorithm Azoyen wrote to calculate the percentage which is displayed, I removed it from all the Conventional skins because it generates meaningless values anyway.

I'm such a rebel.

/me votes topic good.

I hope you're kidding. mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

But seriously, I think we've determined that the topic rating system works for everybody else and the topic starter probably just f*cked something up. smile.gif

I'm probably going to regret asking you a question, but here goes anyway.

Do you mean that people who use your skins can't vote, their votes are calculated in a different way, their votes have a different value, or they can't even view the rating?

I just got on Conventional, and I couldn't even see the rating... let alone rate a topic.

Technical Difficulty

Maybe you rated the topic already?

You can't rate your own topics.

Try changing the skin.

Yeah, you are going to regret that because I'm about to give you an answer! tounge.gif

The front end of the topic rating hack (the stuff you actually see and can click) is just HTML stored in the templates for each skin. The actual data and code is stored in PHP scripts and database entries. A skin can simply remove the HTML from its templates and the "Rate good/bad" links will dissapear from that skin, as well as the rating icons icons in the topic listings and so on. That's what I've done in the Conventional skins, so none of the topic rating front end is displayed.

Right, that's your question answered (I hope) but I need something else to ramble on about to make this post a decent size...

Topic ratings are never going to be worth much because all they indicate is that at some point, some people clicked the "Good" link and some clicked the "Bad" link. There's no way to find out why they made that choice, so there's no way to figure out if the rating they gave to topic is the same as what you would give. The way the good and bad votes are averaged, rescaled and offset to become a percentage makes doubly sure that any meaning they may have had is removed. Especially since the calculation depends on the total number of votes, which is never displayed.

If it showed something like Topic Votes: 42 (40 good and 2 bad) there wouldn't be a rather artibrary calculation required to squish the results into the unsuitable percentage format. However, since the only people who vote are people who are so bored they enjoy clicking a link to see a percentage value change slightly, it is only going to represente that small section of forum opinion.

There is no way that a purely statistical system can indicate the quality of a forum topic, imho. However, the search in this topic hack is absolutely brilliant and I applaud the staff for introducing it. Well, I would if I wasn't busy typing...

Actually that was quite informative, I thank you.

The one part I agree with is the "X number of good votes vs X number of bad votes" part. That would actually tell people whether a topic was at 50% because nobody voted, or because feelings on the topic were mixed. Although I have no idea how hard it would be to do, and if it was more then a simple alteration then it would probably be effort/time wasted on a trivial feature that could be put in somewhere more important.
