jacob.
Programs don't make games; people do. They may use programs to compile the games (ie MSVC++), but everything else is done from scratch in a notepad-styled interface. Try googling DirectX Programming. It takes many highly experienced people to build a game as complicated as GTA. Then again, there are "game-making" programs, but your control over the game is very limited, and you can't sell anything you make with them. dertyjerzian
You have to slow wayyyyy down and go to school for such a task. Now, if you want to go to school, you will need to pick ONE thing to go major for, then study other things on your own time/secondary courses. Want to be the one who makes a future GTA game have backflips for the jetpack? You will need to write code. Want to make the jetpack? You will need to learn either Maya or Max, professionally. (rockstar uses these two programs most) Now, if you'd like to get a head start, contrary to what jacob said, there are fully functional authoring envioroments that include all things needed, including five-star 3d rendering engines. One that is fun to make demos on for presentations of prototype game ideas is 3D GameStudio A6. The home page is: GameStudio They have even liscensed real top-sellers made by just two people! You can use this to make a first-person shooter game with NO coding. The scripting language is C-Script, super simplified C/C++. If the above program isnt for you, there are a lot, and even some free. Look over the top ten here: DevMaster If you are serious about authoring, this is not the place to do it, though I'd like to hear in this topic any progress you make I'd like that alot. But, a great place to learn, with newbie sections and all, and FULL of real life gaming industry workers is: GameDev
jarjar
That's right. Games are made in notepad type interfaces. It isn't really that difficult. If you can modify games, more than likly you make a basic game. The thing is that companies like Rockstar Games, EA Game, ect have professional programs made especially for making games. I have herd that Rockstar uses EA's software. that is proberly the reason for programs not being released for modifing GTA games, like with Max Payne games and the like. MC_eMS
Anyway.... As jacob said, going to school would probably be the best bet. Paying hundreds of dollars for an internet program that you might lose interest in isn't worth it. But it's your choice. Wanna make killer games? Go to school. Wanna make low-level games? Google it. Just remember, If you really wanna make good games, go the whole distance.
jarjar
Renderware is owned by Criterion which is owned by EA. EA didn't make it. Thats right Renderware is owned by Criterion. And non of us said EA made it. I have read somwere about Rockstar using EA's software for there games. I don't really belive it because, one, if this was so why hasen't EA made any really desint games like GTA, two, why has Rockstar got better game then EA of they have the ability to make them? Anyway, really who cares. We all know Rockstar Rulez and kicks ass. EA sucks, well thats what the number plate on the bullet in SA says.
