I have seen this on a few other forums. When you run you're curser over the topic, it gives you the first paragraph or so of what is in the post. I think this would be a good idea, so you don't go into a topic that you are not interested in. A lot of the time someone will post a topic and the name of it dosn't really let you know what it is about. This would save us the trouble of going into the topic.

Some people might go into the topic and not be interested, but post(spam) anyway because they went through the trouble of going into the topic. Again, I am sorry if this is old but, it is a good feature that other forums have.

Hmm... could you find one of these forums with the feature and take a screenshot to show us what it looks like? It doesn't sound like a bad idea to me, but I'd like to see how it's done exactly.

GTA3Freak-2001

XboxWorld Australia?

That forum above uses this feature and while its a neat little thing I honestly don't see the real point as its probably just as easy to click on the topic and then decide that it sucks so you click back.

Agreed.

It would be a problem if everyone was using 56k but there not it only takes a second or two to load a page up now.

Yep. And we should kick their asses for it. If I had a dollar for every time I saw a "I've got a problem" thread in a forum called troubleshooting, I'd be a rich man.

As it is though, hovering over a topic pops up the date it was started. I LOVE that feature. I go to other forums and hover over the threads and it doesn't tell me when it was started! cryani.gif Can you imagine?

Neither did I.

@topic: I like this idea. I think it should be implemented.

Very good idea, not that it's really needed. I mean, more than half of the threads you see around, you can tell what the thread will be about. Not that I look into the modding sections frequently, so I wouldn't know about what it's like in there.

I don't know why I just rambled on like that, but I did, so yeah.

Someone else thought of this somewhere before, but we decided it would be a bad idea since it would effectively double or triple the server load for each topic index. Right now it can grab all the info from the topics table in one swoop, but if we added the preview thingy, it would have to add a new query for each topic (or some beastly left-joined query) from another table to generate the previews. On top of this, it would add considerable weight to the html's filesize.
