colour_my_world
Backmasking : Intentional or unintentional words or lyrics (usually subliminal messages) found while playing speeches/songs in reverse. Backmasking has been around for decades. It's mainly been 'looked for' in the 70's-80's classic rock songs. One of the most famous Backmasked songs is 'Stairway to Heaven', by Led Zeppelin. It's supposed to contain 'Satanic' messages. "He'll give you 666", "In his toolshed where he makes me suffer", etc. My favorite song, Another One Bites the Dust, by Queen, always contains the words "I wanna smoke marijauna (sp?)". "Another one bites the dust" = "I wanna smoke marijuana.", when played backwards. Even a few have been found in Pink Floyd music. "Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to old pink, care of the funny farm.", in the song 'Empty Spaces'. Excellent source: http://jeffmilner.com/backmasking.htm Theres a pretty wierd one in the Beatles song, "I'm So Tired." It says "Paul (Paul McCartney?) is a dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him." Another good source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backward_message Interesting sub-topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the...28numerology%29 "Oh, here's to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan ... He'll give those with him 666; there was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan." - "Stairway to Heaven", backwards.
jacob.
Over half of these hyped "subliminal messages" are entirely unintentional; they're merely the twisting and accenting of sounds to form somewhat understandable phrases, usually suggesting evil thoughts and/or expressions. As far as the intentional ones, wrong? No. The user has to hand-modify the audio to produce the supposed offensive result, and as long as these results aren't publicly broadcasted over a PG-rated radio station, I don't see any conflict here. It's really no different then words.. take "cuff" for example; say the word backwards. Oh noes, it says f*ck. Does anyone care? Is somebody going to get sued? Nope. Otter
There's also never been any solid proof to back up the idea that subliminal messages, or even reversed messages, have any effect on us.
colour_my_world
Well of course they don't have any effect on us. How would they? But some songs are 'complete and utter gibberish'. When played backwards, they sound like normal words. Some people put them in there intentionally like that

When played backwards, they sound like normal words. Some people put them in there intentionally like that And? As I thought I previously made clear, the audience has to use whatever technology possible to reverse the audio output his/herself, thereby giving his/herself the absolute responsibility to deal with whatever offensive phrase he/she has encountered; and in the process of doing so, putting the full blame on his/herself for any conflicts that may or may not encounter as a result of it. Then you could say someone downloaded it from a file-sharing piece of software, or heard if from a friend, in which both cases it is still his/her fault for willingly listening to the modified (reversed) version that contains the supposed subliminal message. colour_my_world
Well, ya, but so many people have found subliminal messages in, for example, 'Stairway to Heaven', that it can't possibly be a coinsidence or someone editing it. colour_my_world
Lock? Why? This is the debate and discussion forum. What has happened it supposed to happen.
Jack_Knife
for example, 'Stairway to Heaven', that it can't possibly be a coinsidence or someone editing it. Does it even say anything at all, though? I know when I play Stairway backwards, and read what it supposedly says off a website, I can barely make it out. If no one told you what it's supposed to say, would you even notice words? At least in that, I believe it's a coincidence.
Taxman
Most of the backmaskings that have been found are just random words meshing. However, the pink floyd one is QUITE intentional.
colour_my_world
Can you say, hot coffee? The user had to edit the files in order to play it, but R* was still blamed.
nathan360
Anyone who is really interested in this backmasking stuff, you may want to check out www.reversespeech.com That website has some very interesting recordings of subconscious messages people unintentionally say. I found out about reverse speech when I was listening to a local radio program about conspiracy theories. This was oddly similar to the San Andreas conspiracy theorist on the radio. You know, that guy that rambles on about the Gloryhole Theme Park. -Natedogg

Lloydos
I'll think you will find in the Queen song oits actually "it's fun to smoke marijuana" when played backwards. And i got a new one in Britney Spears song "Hit me baby one more time" There is something like "Sleep with me i'm not to young" These things are great but i'm not sure they are intentional. That britney one sounds really authentic, but I'm gonna send it to people and see if they recognize it too without me telling them what it is. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, unless it was some stupid joke by people in her studio or whatever. The Queen marijuana one sounds nothing like they say it does. It sounds like Freddy has a massive lisp or something. The Britney one is pretty funny though.
