Overclocking

Do you overclock? and if so how far? what cooling? what temps? show your bench's? etc. Also include any horror stories you have experienced/heard of involving overclocking.

I haven't gotten into Video card overclocking(mainly because i don't want to risk a 500 dollar card and its lifetime warranty) but i have overclocked both of my computers,

Rig 1: Intel P4, asus P4S800

Stock clock speed: 3.0 Ghz

Current clock speed: 3.75Ghz(motherboard limited)

Temperatures: 40*C idle, CPU fan at 2000RPM. 46*C Load, CPU fan at 4900RPM

Cooling: Asus Star-ice HS/F, 1 front 80mm fan, 1 rear 80mm fan, 1 side 200mm fan

Thermal paste\pad: standard Asus thermal paste

Benchmarks:

Comments: recently i re-located the PSU to the front of the case, and installed 2 fans in its place. that and sealing the area around my large fan has dropped the temps 4*C at full load. with the HSF on high, it is capable of 35*C idle, and 46*C full load. It has run the prime95 blend torture test for 4 hours without issue.

Rig 2: AMD Athlon 64, Gigabyte K8-NSC-939

Stock Clock Speed: 1.8Ghz

Current Clock Speed: 2.676Ghz(PSU limited)

Temperatures: 32*C Idle, CPU fan at 2000RPM, 39*C Load, CPU fan at 4900RPM

Cooling: Asus Star-ice HS/F, 2 front 80mm fans, 2 rear 80mm fans, 1 top 80mm fan, 1 side 80mm fan

Thermal paste\pad: Standard Asus thermal paste

Comments: it is currently running the Prime95 Blend torture test, is nearing its first hour.

You really go super far with overclocking IMO......

I am not an overclocker, i dont feel comfortable with it for some reason.

EDIT: I have a horror story to tell, about a program i was using to check my TEMPS. I got like one little number or letter on my MOBO wrong and so it was trying to recognize temps of the wrong MOBO or something, and it made my computer flip out and all the fans kicked into hyper active speed and my CPU got so hot it gave me a message on my screen saying it was overheating and shut down imediately after...i was so scared to turn it back on. but then it worked and all is fine.

No stories or anything fun like that, just a P4 1.8A overclocked to 2.5GHz at the moment, although I can run it at up to 2.7 depending on how much extra heat I want in my room. I used to use the stock cooler just fine (yes, 50% overclock with the normal intel cooler), now I have a weird pipey heatsink with the fan on the side. Idle temp is around 34 degrees C, although it's rarely idle. I used to run folding@home on it, got up to 42 or so. GTASA can get it up to 55 degrees or so. I reckon the thing that's stopping me from going higher is the northbridge, which only has a heatsink on it, no fan.

It's actually hovering around 47 degrees now with 50-80% usage, which I think is caused partially by a high ambient temp (29 degrees) and partially by dust, which I haven't cleaned out in a few months.

I have an AMD 64 2800 running at 2.34, It can run at 22.4, but I have to raise the vcore, and only having 1 80mm case exhaust doesn't help my temps (60C full load at 2.4, 54 at 2.34)

My video card is a leadtek winfast 6600gt (agp) running at 550/1000.

Meh, I overclock my video card to wow myself sometimes, but i haven't gotten into CPU and Ram overclocking much.

I've been running various CPUs overclocked for a while.

First was a 2200+ @ 1.9 GHz

Then 1700+ JIUHB @ 2.1 GHz

Now I have 2600+ @ 2.25 GHz

Not too many bechmarks for it, really just the one 3DMark 2k1 bench: 18776 points

Yep, I overclocked my P4 to a normal clock of 3,62 GHz by raising the FSB.

Intel Pentium 4 550 3,4 GHz with 200 (non quad-pumped) Mhz FSB is enjoying 3,62 GHz at the following temperatures:

Idle: Depending on room-temperature: around the 40°C (FAN @ 2410 RPM = silent)

Load: Depending on room-temperature: Around the 48°C (FAN @ 2500 RPM = still silent)

Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7

Airflowinstruments: AeroCool JetEngine Jr. Case w/ 2x 120mm Front, 1x 120mm back, 1x 80mm side and 2x 40 mm in the PSU.

My CPU gets about 10500 MFLOPS. (while overclocked)

I can post a SisSoft Arith' Benchie Screenie tommorow smile.gif

I overclock my old geforce 4 mx from 275mhz to 370mhz core and 270mhz to 520mhz memory. No cooling, so one of these days it might die.

Horror Stories: When I was first testing the card, I got its memory to 570mhz. It worked some minutes, then the screen went all chopy. I ended the game, and when I tried to start any 3d app, the screen just went changing resolutions. I was like, oops, I fried it. But no, after a reset, the card worked again.

Something weird that happened was that always after I'm done playing, I turn the freqs to normal, to avoid heating problems. But yesterday, when I was going to disable overclocking, I saw in the screen that "No overclocking" was checked, but the clock frequencies were 370 and 525. I turn OG on, and both bars were able to move up to 1.7Ghz... What a trip... of course, I didn't try it, didnt want my hole pc to blow sky high tounge2.gif

I can't overclock my 2.4ghz P4. Stupid mobo, cant lock the AGP/PCI bus, so after +200mhz everything goes to f*ck.

GTA3Freak-2001
I've never done it but I've contemplated doing so with current MSI FX5700 as I am replacing it very soon so it doens't have to last much longer. Its been rated at being extremly good at overclocking even with stock cooling so I might do it but then again I am hesitante at doing things I've never done before. lol

There's always a first time. Download RivaTuner and knock yourself out smile.gif

I dont overclock like i said before....but why does it seem like your guy's temps are cooler than mine? i dont get it, my computer runs idle at 54-55C Stock and now that i think of it that sounds blazing hot. and the fan only spins like 920RPM's Average.

It's a AMD XP 3200+ @ 2.2Ghz

it seems odd that your fan ould only be going 900RPM, and 55*C sounds extremely hot for stock clock speeds. the failing point for the XPs is apparently 70*C so as long as your temps stay under that, it isn't TOO much of an issue. the reason my temps are so much lower is because my processor is an athlon 64(which is going to be a little cooler) and because of the heatsink. at stock speeds, the heatsink was keeping the processor at about 25*C Idle.
