millermagic
I was using the computer today and the screen went blank, the HDD turned off, the PSU fan went off and my other fans went off I thought it went into standby, but it wouldn't wake up. The Num lock was lit up and the optical mouse was lit up, but there was no power. The power light was green (indicating normal operation, not standby). I pressed keys, moved the mouse and hit the power button but nothing, it still statyed green. I flipped the surge protector off for about 20 seconds and when I turned it back on same thing. I then did it 5 times before the computer turned back on. I'm thinking that maybe I overheated the PSU? Any suggestions?
Taxman
I'd have to say your PSU is faulty, or something in your computer overheated. If you have another PSU, see if that works, or try reseating all your RAM/Gfx Card.
Wolf68k
Last time something like this happened to me, the mobo was dying....that was until it finally died.
millermagic
It hasn't done it since. But if my mobo dies then I have a problem beucase I have intergrated video. I'd be able to afford 50 for another one but not a video card.
Wolf68k
Well what CPU socket do you have and I'll see what I can find?
NeoSNightmarE
last time i had a similar issue...PSU. it was actually the two red wires too that melted the port and i had to get a whole new setup. i would check that out.
Duders
Yes, once I came back from my vacation, my computer wouldn't boot. It turned out to be a PSU malfunction. Check it out. -duders
millermagic
I have a P4 Northgate 2.6GHz socket 478. Im probably going to swap in an old 360w(i think) I have lying around.
Wolf68k
Well $50 for a Socket 478 mobo looks easy at Newegg.com, have a look. If you do have that spare PSU laying around and it works out for you, that's great. If not, well now you know you have a good pick of mobo's to choose from...just stay away from the ECS and PCChips boards.
millermagic
Not to bump an old old post, but I figured it out. Lately, 2 wires have been getting caugt in one of the fans and making a buzzing noise (fan blade hitting wires). I never thought about it and just wiggled the swtich around. Today it did it again and when I opened the case, I found that the fan ended up chewing up the insulation so bad that it shorted out.
Wolf68k
That's why when you add something new or many any change inside the case you want to fire it up with the access cover off for a bit to make sure nothing it touching something it shouldn't. And why you need to keep your ears open for new noises and check them out ASAP and figure out a fix.
