Grahics card driver problem

When I was going too play CSS I got a popup from Steam telling me to update my Graphic Card Drivers. The link they gave me didn't work so I went to the desktop, right clicked and then properties. From there I was to settings, advance and 6600GT. Then I clicked NVIDIA Information >> and went to update Drivers.

I filled out everything and it led me to a page where I could download the newest drivers. I looked to the side and saw a tips link, so I went there. It told me to uninstall the old drivers so I did. When it was finished I was required to restart, but when WindowsXP loaded back up, Windows was telling me something about new hardware. I would go through it, but not install anything. It came up 3 times.

Then I decided to just install the newest Drivers. I opened up IE, but because Comcast sucks it was down. I also noticed that the computer was very slow so I did System Restore. That didn't reinstall my old Drivers, but the internet did start working. I installed the newest drivers and everythings just as fast. The only problem is my resolution is messed up. I tried putting it back too 1280X768, but then it was too small. I readjusted it with my monitor so it will fit, but it looks stretched out. How can I fix this?

I would need to a pic of the display to understand the problem fully.

I could also go back to nVidia's web site and download the older drivers again (that is if Windows Driver Rollback doesn't work, that I like using it) and reinstall them.

Then if the display comes back to normal, try installing the new drivers again but without uninstalling the old.

BTW, that green font color is a b*tch to read on a blue background.

I'm not sure if you can notice it that easily. Try looking at the aim window.

Unistalling old drivers? Thats bullsh*t, I never do that when I get new drivers. Just get the new drivers and install them, you graphics card is just running of the Default Windows XP ones, which don't have all the proper resultions. The reason your screen looks scretched is because the ratio is screwed up, hence the resultion is not a 4:3 ratio. 1280x768 is a Widescreen resultion (16:10 or 16:9 not completely sure) You know how ratios work, right?

Do you have any solutions to help fix my problem? I might try downloading the old drivers and then keeping them while I install the new ones. Also I think it might be reading the new ones because when I didn't have any installed the internet would go slow and some of the settings were gone in Display properties>settings>advance.

Also I forgot to mention that when I had my old dell the same thing happened.

I'm not sure about it going slow with scrolling, but I moved the window it was going slow. I already installed the newest drivers. The only problem now is that the screen looks strange.

GTA3Freak-2001
Go into your device manager and uninstall your display device, restart your PC and ignore the windows new device wizard. Install the latest drivers and see if that helps.

Nope that didn't help. I think I'm just going to install the old drivers. I tried the rollback option, but it couldn't find them. Does anyone know where I could find the ones 2nd to last? I believe the last too numbers are 68. dontgetit.gif

nVidia Archived drivers http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html

I'll edit if I have a fix for the ratio thing

Crazy thought, but once when I had to uninstall my nVidia drivers for whatever reason Windows lost my monitor drivers as well and I had to reinstall those drivers.

See if you can do that and make sure it's set correctly. Something makes me thing that make when you restarted and were looking at all the new hardware stuff you didn't pay full attention what you were clicking on and might have picked the right brand of monitor but wrong model.

What did you have the resolution set to? If you're running at 1280x768, then I assume you have a 17 or 19 inch monitor, and run at 1280x960, or 1280x1024 most of the time. So try setting it to them and see if theres stretching.

This is where I got my monitor.

I guess it's 17 inch E773 (16 inch viewable) Conventional CRT. But I've always ran it at around 1280x768. I don't think it was exactly that though.

wolf68k, I'll try reinstalling the drivers again, but I don't remember ever being asked about my monitor.

Ok, I'm such a retard. smile.gif I was getting the resolution wrong the whole time. It's supposed too be 1024X768. blush.gif Sorry guys, but if it wasn't for wolf68k making me reinstall my drivers I would have never noticed.

I double posted because Bond was in here and I wasn't sure if he was going to post or not. If I would have edited it you guys might have missed it. I've wasted my whole day because I should go to bed in about 30 minutes. Aleast I won't be having this problem again.
