PS2 .img?

I just have a few questions about PlayStation2 .img archives. At first glance, they seem the same as the GTA .img archives, but they seem to be different. So does anyone know anything about them, and if so,

Is there a way to open ps2 .img archives?

And are they all standard, or game-specific?

Is there a program made (by the gta modders, or anyone, for that matter,) to use them?

I won't pretend to know the ins and outs of library construction. Just wanted to point out that the textures within will be platform specific since each platform uses a different GPU.

"img", is not a gta-specific file format, its just an extension. anyway, the same tools that open img files on the pc gta's, will work on the ps2 ones, but its pretty pointless. both the textures AND models are in a format thats optimized for the ps2. extracting those files is nigh on worthless.

Good point, gta's renderware textures are hard enough to veiw as they change compression types with each series progression. And that's just one game series.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Just one hard-to-use format after another.

Or if you mean CD images (of the PS2 game disc), then that's a totally different format.

No, I mean the archives, but the confusion with CD images was a real problem for me as I was researching this on my own. About 90% of the time, all I could find was stuff about cd images.

Thanks for your guys' help, I'm trying to put together the early stages of a Total Conversion (in the most literal sense of the term), and this has convinced me that we (the team and I) would have better luck converting from the pc version rather than the ps2 version.

Has anyone heard of Driver 3? It's a game similar to GTA, with photorealistic graphics (I said photorealistic, not videorealistic), 3 huge and detailed cities, and awesome car chases. Unfourtunatley, the fun ends once you get out of the car, as the game is plagued with glitches abound, static controls, and a poor targeting system (shooting becomes near-impossible). So together with a team from the atari forums, we planned to mod Driver 3. But the lack of tools, knowlege, following, or even a stable engine, prevents easily modding the original game. So I came up with a plan to convert Driver 3 into Vice City, and now, in its early, unannounced plans, this is the GTA: Driver 3 Total Conversion.
