But the sfx.RAW is on the money. Does sound play fine in other things? WMP, WinAmp, other games and so on. Check the audio settings within the game and make sure the right sound card is set there. If part of the Audio folder on the install disc had been modified/deleted, then the disc would be a fake, as original discs are write protected when burnt and cannot be edited.
