The carrier now travels forward!!

 

Using the handling edits that Cerbera was so kind as to help with, plus an increase on the acceleration to 5 instead of 0.5, the boat now travels forward at a convincing pace.. I will be offering some faster versions of the handling as well, but really all it involves is increasing the acceleration number.

 

Only issue remaining with the handling is it turns a bit fast when you steer, but I'm sure Cerb with help with that today.. he's been awesome so far - especially considering he can't even run the model on his video card.

 

I have the carrier now so I can land on it and get back into the plane if I'm close enough to either far end of the runway.

 

I can also drive up inside the back with a boat, then hop out and run upstairs... gonna have to move that front seat dummy today too.. no big.

 

I'm also gonna do some polishing of the col file - only problem here is that we're at the limit of pollies available, so I'm going to have to start removing unnecessary parts and testing carefully... it's going to be a pain.

 

I'll have to add a new rar including the new handling line, but I'll keep the original up there for now.

 

Using Cebera's handling editor (search on these forums for it, or his site), replace the lines below into your handling.cfg in the data directory - with Cerbera's editor, it parses what you paste & puts it into the right columns perfectly.

Faster handling lines...

 

I've edited the Res & TurnRes xyz, adjusted the drag, inertia, acceleration and top speed.. seems to be great fun until you hit something, then it tends to bounce in the air.

 

I suspect I am now dealing with the dodgy col file, since the bottom isn't very well done at all.. it is most noticeable when you bounce out of the water - when it lands, the nose often sticks under water... this is definitely the spheres at the front of the collision file, which I am going to work on now... in the meantime, enjoy this faster handling edit....

I recently released a new version of my editor in the CFG Studio thread. Nik and I spoke to each other over MSN just now and he is working on optimising the model, so hopefully it might run on my machine once he is done with that. If it doesn't make a big enough difference, he could just make a super-basic version of the model which would just be the hull, the runway and a way to get in. tounge.gif

 

All I need is the shape of the model so I can see what effect the handling is having. With such a large object I would need to do first-hand experiments to create a refined handling setup.

I don't usually post WIPs.... I'd rather save the surprise for the release, but this one's so obvious a necessity, I was scared someone would take the idea while I was working on it, so here goes..

Easter Bay Aircraft Carrier tropic replacement boat - Beta 2.

 

Thanks to Cerbera for his awesome handling help as well as his wicked handling editor that debugs the columns!!!

 

Done so far:

Access from runway and wet dock - yes you can land planes on it now with the handling updates in the beta 2 package.

 

Access all levels and safe stairwell use, col file at poly limit, placed the map parts using the map ipl so they line up perfectly, and managed to keep the texture and models identical to those in the map objects.. even the distance model is at full pollies so it doesn't look crap when you back up a bit on the camera (thanks to Racer_S for camhack cookie.gif).

 

New in Beta 2:

Imported the pipes, stair rails, AC room and a winch into the hirez model... now most of the interior of the ship is there, though still very empty - I already have all the parts for the missiles etc, but we have reached the limit of the pollies for the vehicle, so they're gonna have to stay out for now.

 

Fixed the back of the col file - you can now drive up in a boat and climb aboard via the rear ramp.

 

Placed the dummies better. At this stage he still sits in the stairway, but now a little lower so you can exit via the door. Still isn't his home for the final... I was thinking it'd be cute if he sat on a beanbag in front of a games console inside the ship as an alternative to the bridge, which is empty/not modelled inside.

 

Ambient light... hmmm.. I removed the omni-lighting from the model deliberately while I was getting everything together so I could better see the model... but looking at the original during testing, gotta say I hate it being dark in there... I might even leave it like this.

 

ETA:

I'm taking this one slower than usual, trying to make it as perfect as it deserves... I feel this would make a great battleground for multiplayer (modding) servers. Expect up to a month for release (or as little as maybe a week), but the time taken will be well spent.

Beta 2 is out for those that missed the note in the page change..

 

It does travel forward at quite a nice speed on mine, and the few others I've had beta testing - any other reports, please post ASAP - I'm watching carefully to see if I can fix anything here.

I found that the reason it crashed for me wasn't because of an error with the model, it was an error with IMG Tool 2.0 by Spooky. The new version only adds the first file you select from the Tools > Add window, even though it allows many files to be selected. I will try and talk to Spooky about this ASAP because this error will probably have caught out many other people. He might be convinced to make some other improvements, like allowing horizontal scrolling with Minimise and Maximise buttons, using CTRL+F for the Find form instead of F2, making the Find form more functional like in Respawn's IMG program, stuff like that.

 

Anyway, by adding only the DFF and then adding only the TXD and then rebuilding the archive, it now works! I installed NikT's handling and it basically works but it goes a bit mad in certain circumstances. There is a slight lag when it first spawns but there is no lag after that.

I run the game on a 32mb video card on my laptop (2.2ghz P4, 512mb RAM) at 800x600 and the boat does not lag my game at all.

i got weak ass 128mb RAM Pentium 4

don't know the ghz though... and I'm mostly on the 640 resolution (lowest)

 

high visual effects

 

guess it's not enough, huh?

I'm on a 1Ghz PIII with 512Mb RAM and an ATI Radeon 9200 - and it runs fine at 1024x768....

 

IT WILL WORK FOR ALL YOUR CPUS CONSIDERING MINE IS THIS LAME.

i think i can help you with the carrier to make it carry boats. the ramp u made at the back u drive the bout u want to carry at the ramp at a fast speed. the boat will go on the ground , and the u only have to push it back in the water ! as simple as that u u do something. when u turn the carrier the other boat also moves. causing it to go near the walls. well the boat would stay there if u make that port of the wall solid, right now the boat just goes trough the walls and back in the water,

The new version of the boat lets you get out fine. I always used a jetpack to get out of the boat before.

wow better than ever now

 

umm. the strangest thing happened:

 

a rustler landed on the boat taxied aroun the runway turn around and took off again omg . it was tootally biggrin.gif cool

 

i found another bug: the boat's accelaration is 13 right now. i swpayned it near sf airport and drove out to the open sea then i rammed the boat on a beach. the boat began to bounce then it began to spin , i got a series of loading screens and the screen changed colour .try it. then press esc and start a new game
