Lockdogg
Fast on his feet Kotaku reader Imran Moghul writes to tell me about his brother’s adventures at the Edinburgh International Conference Center which runs from August 10 through 14. It sounds like they made some pretty amazing announcements at the Nvidia presentation. According to Moghul, the Nvidia people announced that the new Unreal Tournament 2007 and Gears of War will both be using the Novodex physics engine (that’s Swiss) and not Havok. The company also said that within the next year they will be releasing a special physics graphics card which will take over the physics calculations load from standard graphics cards. Both Unreal 07 and Gears of War will likely support this feature. Finally, the company announced that Rockstar purchased the Unreal 3 Engine for a future title. Good stuff Moghul, keep up the good work. Make sure to check back with us as more reports from Edinburgh begin to filter in from readers, industry folk and perhaps a Kotaku writer or two. http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/nvidia/edinbu...card-117036.php I think we all know where this is going....... D Jones
If they do (they=R*), the future game will look amazing. It's going to look weird seeing that GTA4 is going to look....real.

My thoughts exactly. Just to get an idea, go look at those "Gears of War" screens. I cannot believe that is what the next GTA will look like....amazing. A very good move by R* indeed. gannonroader
Who said anything about unreal? What about Alan Wake(good chance of being published by rockstar) or a future maxpayne or something. Or maybe even a red dead revolver sequel, or just a game that hasn't been confirmed yet. This could be for anything, don't bet on it being a gta. Not saying it isn't, and I would love as much as the next guy if it were, but don't get your hopes up yet is all i'm saying.

Devyl
Did I read this right? The company also said that within the next year they will be releasing a special physics graphics card which will take over the physics calculations load from standard graphics cards. Both Unreal 07 and Gears of War will likely support this feature. ??? We're gonna need a seperate card to run this stuff correctly? Maybe i'm jumping to conclusions, but if i'm not mistaken, it looks like our current 7800GTX's evidently can't handle this future stuff...
GTAGuy
GTA4 with UE3 + Novodex Physics with PhysX PPU = Holy exploding sh*t batman! *Imagines crashing through the walls of a building with a Rhino*

And thank God I haven't upgraded my video card yet. Waste of money. I'd rather get a new computer when this new stuff comes out.

The whole idea of having to have a PPU hasn't gone over well so far. For one, a PhysX card is going to cost $250 to $300. That's bullsh*t if you already have $400 or more invested in a high end graphics card. Chances are though that Nvidia and ATI will eventually incorporate a PPU into their GPUs which would be a lot cheaper than having to buy a stand-alone PhysX card. The $1100 and change I spent on my SLI'd 7800GTX's isn't going to be getting any additions for QUITE a while. If they (Nvidia, ATi) implement the PPU on their cards, and find a way to make it compatible with their SLI'd twins sans PPU, I could see an upgrade. But just a whole new card? I think not. Konoko45
I think they might be licensing it for some kind of different project, the previous Unreal engines weren't really capable of GTA-like streaming areas. Then again, I haven't really heard if UE3 was capable of doing this kind of thing yet. So I find it rather hard to imagine a GTA in UE3. But obviously they need to switch over to some more efficient than what they were using, especially in the departments of shading, terrain, lighting, and reflections. illspirit
Hmmm, this might explain why that guy from Epic mentioned how perfect the new engine would be for Grand Theft Auto like 5 times during a single demo.

THE GAME™
Update: It looks like I’m not the only one who received the error-riddled email. Here’s the run down. Rein insists that Rockstar has not licensed the Unreal 3 Engine for any future title and that no such announcement was made. http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/nvidia/edinbu...card-117036.php
AZAZEL
Besides, Rockstar have been developing a new game engine of their own since the release of Vice City, so it is very unlikely that any U3E or such engine will be used in GTA4. ~az Edited August 13, 2005 by azazel. Hmm.. You need to be an insider. Nah, outsiders can view the low res version. I watched it again myself just to make sure it worked before posting. But, yea, looks like that was fake and stuff, but I saw some photos of an Epic powerpoint presentation (from GDC, I think) that had R* in the user list. AFAIK, R*^ was only working on tweaks and extensions for RW since GTAIII, and not a whole engine, per se. In theory, their new streaming and physics system could be compiled into their own renderer, or, they could just as easily port the stuff to UE3 or whatever. If they intend to have a GTA for the PS3's launch (or anywhere near it), they would almost have to use a third party engine.

Cojawfee
Hmmm, this might explain why that guy from Epic mentioned how perfect the new engine would be for Grand Theft Auto like 5 times during a single demo. He was merely mentioning that the engine could do things that a game that everyone would know (grand theft auto) alreayd demonstrates.
