Article: The Palmeiro Scandal
By: woodprior383
. Rafael Palmeiro was supposed to be one of the good guys. He was one of the guys leading the fight against steroids. He wagged his finger at congress while denying that he had ever used steroids.

But this week he tested positive for steroids. IT was the same kind of steroid that a certain Olympic sprinter used. I think most of us know who that is. Raffy said he did not know how the banned substance got into his body. However, a drug that potent has to be injected or ingested. Doctors and pharmacists say that it would be next to impossible for that kind of drug to be taken accidentally.

So is this the end of the "Baseball Good Guy?” Hardly. There are many other players that are fighting against steroids, such as Johnny Damon. But Raffy was certainly the most prolific of those players. He is one of the few players with 500 HR and 3000 hits. His testimony to congress was the highlight of that whole congress-baseball fiasco.

Another question has to be raised. Is this good or bad for baseball? I think this can be answered 2 ways. It is good for baseball because it shows that the MLB is not protecting its superstars. Quite a few other players have been caught using steroids but all of them have been no-names. That raised concern that the MLB was only going to target the guys that don't fill the seats for them. That theory is shot down now, however.

Then there is the other side of the spectrum. It is bad for baseball because one of their star players has been "tainted" if you will. It has also brought the big ugly steroid cloud back over the MLB.

And as for this talk about Raffy committing perjury, I say bullsh*t. He talked to congress in March and it has been shown that the positive test was in April or May. So perjury is out of the question here. And it seems to me that prosecutors in the U.S. are more interested in going after the steroid suppliers instead of the users.

My View

Reggie McNeil is one of the best QBs in the nation. He can pass and he can run like the wind. He has a good team behind him with a good running game and a fairly decent passing game, and a decent O-Line. I would compare him to Michael Vick: He has a powerful arm and runs fairly fast, so if you play the wrong defense he could kill you either way. He had a lot of hype last year, along with Brad Smith. But I think last year, Reggie proved that he was the better player after having a close game with OU. He also threw a 60 yard bomb before halftime against OSU, to prove his arm strength. Watch out, this guy will be on the Heisman list at the end of the year.

Peyton Manning

My View

He killed every team. Simple. He is the best QB in the nation. Simple. If you watched this guy last year, there really isn't anything you can't say about him. He is the most accurate and best minded QB in the nation, and possibly the best QB for USC. With about 75% of the team coming back from last year, don't be surprised if they win 3 straight championships in a row with Leinart.

My View

He would not get the Heisman for his rushing abilities, but for his receiving and kick return abilities. Reggie Bush is extremely fast and once he gets in the open it will be hard to stop him. He is a threat in so many ways, some defenses not only have to dime up on Leinart but have to make a defense to watch Bush, because he could kill you by running it for 40 yards or catching a TD pass.

My View

Might not be a Reggie Bush, but I can guarantee that he could run over any D-Lineman or Linebacker in the game, just watch him. He can either out-run you or simply bulldoze you out of his way. And the amazing part is that he was only a True Freshman when he accomplished these things. He will be a great back this year and his Junior year, if it goes smooth.

Michael Vick

My View

He led the entire nation in rushing for QBs. People say he won't be a QB in the NFL. I wouldn't blame the people, he is arguably the fastest QB in the nation and possibly one of the fastest players out there. He had more Rushing TDs than Passing TDs last year. If Mack Brown can use him right, he will be a big threat.

Article: Hopkins-Taylor I
By: Cuse510
. The surge came, just like everyone knew it would. After being passive for the first ¾ of his Middleweight title boxing match with Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor, Bernard “the Executioner” Hopkins finally turned up the heat and staggered his opponent for the last 3 rounds. The only question was, would it be too little too late?

This match was billed as the aging champ vs. the heir apparent, which it really was. Hopkins, the 40 year old middleweight champion for more than 10 years, admitted that Taylor would eventually be the champion of that division. Bernard thought it would be after he had retired though, which he said would be in a year. “Ex”, not exactly a knockout artist, had held the Middleweight title for an unprecedented 10 year span by being a great technical fighter. Taylor, the stronger, faster, and younger fighter, was a perfect 23-0, and had one of the nastiest jabs in boxing. Not only did these two fighters have cool nicknames, but they were two of the best lb for lb boxers in the world. Hopkins was a slight favorite, but everyone knew the fight would be close.

B-Hop’s strategy was to let the younger, more eager Taylor tire himself out by throwing big punches early and then “take him into deep water” in the later rounds. However, he did not work his strategy to perfection, and waited too long to bring Taylor out of the shallow end. One might expect that from a younger, less experienced fighter, but not from the top lb for lb boxer in the world. The 40 year old vet with 20 successful title defenses in a row. But it happened, and Jermain Taylor took advantage of his mistake. Taylor was the aggressor for the first 8 rounds, winning most of them. He got in a lot of good shots on Hopkins, who didn’t seem to want to throw back. Finally, Hopkins would turn on the heat, staggering Taylor badly in the 10th round. Hopkins then wanted to knock him out, but Taylor did the smart thing and kept clinching with Hopkins whenever he was in danger. After 11 rounds of the scheduled 12 rounder, two of the judges’ cards already had winners, one with Hopkins ahead by three points, and one with Taylor ahead by three points. Judge Duane Ford had Taylor up by one. Taylor fought hard in the last round, but was just too tired. Hopkins pretty much dominated the round. However, Ford inexplicably gave the round to Taylor, resulting in a split decision victory for “Bad Intentions.” If he had given it to Hopkins, it would have been a draw.

Hopkins appealed the decision, but it was denied, so he will have to wait for his rematch (which he is owed due to a contract stipulation with Taylor) to retrieve his belt. Taylor suffered a bad cut on his head in the first fight though, so his management says the fight will have to wait until at least December. The rematch should be a good fight, but you can bet on one thing: He might not win the fight, but Bernard Hopkins will not make the same mistake twice.

Article: Why Boxing Will Never Regain Popularity
By: Burning-Ice
. Well, I for one , am a big boxing fan. However, it’s sad to see that I can rarely watch a decent fight on TV anymore without paying for it. Seriously, unless you KNOW the fight is going to be good, along with a great undercard of fights, are you really going to pay $50 dollars for it? An example of this would be a past his prime Mike Tyson fighting a complete bum, Kevin McBride (McBride won, that’s how past his prime Tyson is,) on PPV for $50…how this fight got 350,000 PPV buys beats me but it sure as hell wasn’t worth it. Half a century ago, fights were televised for free on ABC. These fights included practically all of Muhammad Ali’s fights. Since the invention of PPV, boxing’s popularity has dropped dramatically in my opinion. How many casual boxing fans are really going to pay to see fighters they don’t know?

Pay Per View is not the only reason boxing is not regaining popularity. The so-called “glamour” divisions, the heavyweights, aren’t even fighting each other. Why? Because they are pussies who don’t want to face a challenge and only want money. It is so frustrating to see fighters not fight because of locations, money, and fear. When you see the smaller guys (Diego Corrales, JL Castillo, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales…you see the point) fighting each other and giving great wars, it’s a shame to look at the heavyweight division. If any fights should be PPV, it should be for those type of fighters, who always give the crowd what they want. Corrales-Castillo I ,which was a complete war, was for free on Showtime a couple of months ago. That was the type of fight that make people into boxing fans, seeing two guys giving everything they got for the win. I’m glad to see that these guys are actually going to have a rematch and the undercard is also great. It is going to be a PPV but this is definitely worth it.

So basically what I’m trying to say is that I am truly sick of MOST PPVs being complete crap and forcing boxing fans to pay to see it. Boxers should stop being greedy and give what the people want: Fights that the people want to see.

Article: NBA Off-Season Report
By: Nate Baker1
. Recent coach movement involves Larry Brown being excavated from Detroit and replaced a day later by Flip Saunders. Flip has much less seasons coached under his belt than Larry, but we will have to see how the team fairs. I myself think that the team might suffer and of course, Darko won’t get much playing time again.

Brown is now coaching the New York Knicks. Larry will take the Knicks and possibly make them into a playoff contender. Even though they lost Kurt Thomas to the Suns, they got Nate Robinson, a undersized guard who has great off-ball skills, and Quentin Richardson, a 3 point chucker who tied for the most 3 pointers made last season and won the All Star 3-point contest. Q also has very good low post skills, but didn’t use them on the fast break Suns last season. Another addition is Jerome James, a 7-1 center who played for the Sonics last season. Also, guard Allan Houston might be gone, but it is unsure.

Forward Stromile Swift was signed by the Rockets. He will either be a 6th man or play in front of Juwan Howard depending on his health. Either way, dealing with him, Yao, and T-Mac will present major problems.

Also, Joe Johnson seems to have asked the Suns not to try and make a deal with him, so he could go to the Hawks. You may be asking yourself why. Well because he doesn’t want to be the fourth wheel or always overshadowed by his other All Star teammates like Marion, Nash, and Amare. If he went to the Hawks he would probably play PG as he did a little with the Suns. It is a big deal but I hope he stays with my Suns.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim signed with New Jersey, a major acquisition for the Nets. The new starting lineup would have Jason Kidd and Vince Carter in the backcourt, followed by Jefferson, Shareef, and probably Kristic at center. This team could make it further than the first round if all goes well.

A blockbuster trade involving 13 players, the biggest deal ever in NBA history, sent Jason Williams (Grizzlies), James Posey (Grizzlies), and Antoine Walker (Celtics) to the Heat. The Heat meanwhile only lost Eddie Jones in the deal. This obviously is big for Miami. With a lineup with the likes of J-Will, Dwyane Wade, James Posey, Antoine Walker, and you know who, this team will be a big contender this coming season.

Article: Why Dynasties are Getting Harder to Come by in College Basketball
By: Cuse510
. It happened this year. And last year. And the year before that. A trend is growing in college basketball, and it’s not good for any coach thinking “dynasty.” The last three years, the national championship team has had devastating losses to the NBA from their underclassmen.

In 2003, freshman sensation Carmelo Anthony led the Syracuse Orangemen (now just the Orange) to the national title as a #3 seed. Sure, he had a lot of help, but ‘Melo was far and away the star of the team, averaging 22.2 points, 10 boards, 2.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Melo decided to go to the NBA after that season though, and was the third pick in the NBA Draft. The only other player the Orange(men) lost that year was Kueth Duany, a senior who provided leadership and about 10 ppg. Having followed Syracuse the past two years, I know they have been good, but they could have easily gotten back to the Final Four with Carmelo. But instead of trying to help Jim Boeheim defend his title, Anthony said, “I don't want to make it sound bad, but there's really nothing more that I could get out of college. And I'm going to get my degree — you can quote me.” In the last two years, Syracuse has failed to make it out of the Sweet 16.

The Uconn Huskies won the tournament in 2004, on the strength of juniors Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor, the former averaging 18.5 ppg and 4.5 apg while the latter averaged 17.6 points and 11.5 rebounds (not to mention 4 blocks a game!) Yet this duo did not show what a dominating tandem they could have been as seniors because both left after they won the National Championship (they were both taken in the top 3 in the draft). This past year the Huskies were upset by N.C. State in the Sweet 16.

Although both of those Big East teams suffered damaging losses, neither compare to what happened to North Carolina this year. After beating Illinois for the National Championship (and crushing hearts of many people in my wonderful state) the Tar Heels proceeded to lose freshman Marvin Williams (11.3 ppg), and juniors Raymond Felton (12.9), Sean May (17.5), and Rashad McCants (16) to the NBA Draft as early entry candidates. When you also throw in the fact that Jawad Williams, Jackie Manuel, and Melvin Scott were all seniors, the Tar Heels lost their top seven scorers from their championship season. Now David Noel (yes, the same David Noel who averaged a mighty 3.9 points per game last year) is their top returning scorer. I bet Melvin Scott is kicking himself for not being born a year later. The Tar Heels are bringing in some good freshmen, but with the lack of experience I doubt they’ll be an elite team. They could go from National Champions to a sub-.500 team in one year.

It is definitely a positive thing that these players played in college instead of going straight to the NBA, but it is becoming almost automatic now that a championship team will lose not only its seniors, but its good younger players also. This could be bad or good (more parity) depending on how you look at it, but there’s one thing it seems to mean: Dynasties are for ancient China. In college basketball, it’s one and done.

Hey everyone, hope you enjoyed the first Sports Weekly. I know it isn't great, but it will improve. I had to do all the tables on short notice (and I'm terrible with tables), so it might not look great. I just used D Jones' old tables. Plus, if you don't see your favorite sport covered in here, please don't complain! Many writers did not submit articles and we cannot control that. Anyways, hope you all enjoy smile.gif

Where did you get my old tables at? I couldn't even find them blink.gif .

Sports Weekly? Seems more like Basketball/Baseball/NFL Weekly. To be honest, if you are going to do something like this it'd be nice if you covered sports from other countries, not just america. Otherwise, I'd change the name to US Sports Weekly. It's very Misleading. sly.gif

About international Sports: I put out an "advertisement" if you will, in the Footy Desk, but no one really responded sad.gif . Ramirez is the only one who showed a little interest and that was a week later. I probably should have done that with in Aussie Sports also, but I feared I'd get the same response. Plus, I figured, if they post in Aussie Sports, that means they go through the sports discussion page, so they see all the Sports Weekly stuff but they don't care. Anyways, point is, anyone who wants to write can write. If no international writers want to write, what can we do?

About the deadline:It was stated on the Front office page and the "sports articles" page about a week ago.

I like it but you should conclude it with your names and a 'thanks for reading', you know. I liked it, and yes, you still need more members for the weekly issues, as the NFL season starts, that will be needed. Maybe, when I get more known around here, I could help with the issues, as NFL writer. But that's when I get more known, as I know you from other forums Cuse and woodprior, so you two know me. cookie.gif

You don't have to be known to write an NFL article. We would love to have you on the staff right now.
