Reformatting, need backup advice..

I am going to reformat my main hdd and re-install windows. So which files and from where should I backup for GTA: SA (save games, configs, etc.).

My Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\gta_sa.set

That's the option file.

My Documents\GTA San Andreas User files\gtasasfX.b

where X is your save slot.

Just for safeness take the whole User file folder.

Do you have more than one partition? How big is your hard drive?

 

I learned a LONG time ago to keep everything I need in the My Documents folder, including downloads such as device drivers, game patches, and Windows upgrades. I put backups of saved game files there, too. Your San Andreas User Files folder is already in My Documents. When the time comes for a reformat, I just copy My Documents from the C: drive to another partition or a separate hard drive. Then I copy it back once Windows is set up.

 

If you have a big hard drive, something in the order of 60+ Gb, consider making two separate partitions: one for Windows and your business software, and another for games or media (such as MP3s). A second partition would give you a safe place to put a copy of My Documents while formatting the C: drive.

 

Doing this beats the hell out of having to burn a bunch of data CDs just to reinstall Windows.

And yes, I have 4 partitions (of 160 GB), anyways, off to formatting..
