Washington D.C. goes after Rockstar

Although the Hot Coffee isn't quite as piping hot as it has been of late, the fallout over the hidden sex mini-games in Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is still simmering. Always a lightning rod for controversy, Rockstar might be growing weary of all the free publicity it has been getting, as games it hasn't even released yet are now becoming the target of public outcries.

Yesterday, members of the Washington, D.C.-based youth group Peaceoholics protested outside Rockstar Games' New York offices, carrying signs that read "Put the cuffs on Rockstar, not youth" and "Prosecute Rockstar Games; they are felons" and chanting "Hey hey, ho ho, Rockstar Games has got to go."

Though the Peaceoholics have accused Rockstar of marketing violent games for children in the past, Tuesday's event was specifically directed at convincing the developer to shelve the upcoming Bully, which Rockstar describes as a game where players take the role of a "troublesome schoolboy" who "stands up to bullies, gets picked on by teachers, plays pranks on malicious kids, wins or loses the girl, and ultimately learns to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school."

Although the game is not yet rated (an M for Mature tag seems a certainty) and Rockstar has revealed next to nothing about the actual gameplay, Bully has already made some waves. Given the developer's history with controversial titles and the lasting taboo of violence in a school setting ever since the Columbine High School shootings, it's a safe bet this won't be the last bit of protest directed Rockstar's way over its latest offering.

Attempts to reach Rockstar Games and Peaceoholics for comment Wednesday afternoon were not successful.

I actually saw footage from it on AOTS (Attack of the show, G4). It seemed he just took 2 school buses full of black minors (no racism intended) to the place and told them what to say, and Jack looked terrible as ever and the show's host, of course, had a little few words to slam on him wink.gif

Heh, morons. Rockstar Games isn't the developer, it's the publisher. Furthermore, Bully isn't from the same developers as the GTA series or Manhunt - those were from Rockstar North. Bully is from Rockstar Vancouver.

Catch 22. Violence in America is inspired by GTA, which in turn is inspired by violence in America. Heh heh... pewp.

I was watching a show on the Discovery Channel last night that interviewed game developers which often stated that the violence in videogames is enspired my the real crime we have in the real world. So yea, endless cycle of blame.

Peaceoholics? Didn't they lost the way for Drugoholics? A punch in the stomach should bring them back to reality.

I am one of the newest members here, and I'm proud of saying. You don't see me shooting people, or robbing things!

Someone should really do something about this. Politicians are really against Rockstar.

Rockstar should just ignore those f*cking shemales. What the hell is wrong with these people anyway? There are so many M rated game developers out there, but no one goes after them. Everything that happens in the friggin world is Rockstar's fault. It's all children, children. Wtf is Rockstar supposed to do if the childrens' parents are dumbf*cks and buy them the game?

Screw Jack Thompson and Peaceoholics, I'm going to be getting Bully as soon as it comes out. I also think that they should have waited for more details about the game to be released rather than making a big deal over the content of the game judging by this screenshot and automatically assuming that the protagonist is the school bully which from my understanding is incorrect because the official statement says: "As a troublesome schoolboy, you'll laugh and cringe as you stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks on malicious kids, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school, Bullworth Academy.".

No it isnt, only if your child is retarted, under the age of 7,

or you're a retarted parent and have sheltered him/her all their life

or you parents are just to stupid to realize that your kid was on crack while playing the game

im betting most of the suposed "gta related" violence is because of drugs

hmmm... this teenager was smoking reefer while he shot 2 kids,

it was probably the video games he plays though

@Dublo, yeah because i thought columbine was Marilyn Manson's fault sarcasm.gif

Exactly, The problem is the parents buying the games...

Kids cant buy them in shops, so they get theyre parents to.

The parents should know better.

Yeah, there is a reason the game is illegal to sell to minors. Because minors shouldn't play it. As long as their parents don't want them to.
