millermagic
I was playing morrowind and left the computer alone for a few minutes and when I came back, the Intel Active monitor was beeping telling me that it had detected something was wrong. I checked the temp of the CPU and when I checked it was 170degrees F. I went to view the alert logs and my cpu fan died about 10 times for 2 minutes each (so it was more like 20 minutes alone). I'm not one to let dust build up on anytthingh either, I know what gummed up fans can do . Any suggestions on what the problem is causing the fan to randomly stop? Mercie
Old age, moving parts, old age and moving parts. Face it, nothing lasts forever. Good fan to replace it with though... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835129233 $20, Quiet, works very well. I have one, ripped off the blue LED's though, I hate rice. maelstrom
make sure the connector is pushed all the way on to the cpu fan header... some fans are just plain cheap so you may have to replace it. Does it feel "rough" when you turn the fan manually (and powered off)? - that happens to cheap sleeve bearing fans... there are also products like this 60mm to 80mm adaptor in case you just want more airflow. great upgrade idea if your like your heatsink or just don't want to deal with removing it I would also go into the bios and lower the warning temp to 140 and halt the system at 150 - 170! man that is smokin'!! millermagic
One problem with the fans, I don't do internet purchasing so that won't work. The bearings arn't gone, it turns perfectly easy when off The connectors are in good

maelstrom
yea they have that stuff at Micro Center if you live near one... 60mm to 80mm Adapter $2.99 Dual Ball Bearing Case Fan (Cooler Master SAF-B82) $5.99 Not a bad cooling upgrade for $10, and is much quieter (more cfm's and less rpm's) to boot. I have done this to most all my bad CPU fans and have not had to replace them again. The trick is to get ball-bearing fans to replace the sleeve-bearing duds. The cooler master is nice because it comes with an adaptor so you can use your mobo header or just connect it directly to the power supply molex. The one I got even had a rpm lead that led to the mobo header so the fan rpm alarms would still work (not sure about the cooler master mine was different brand... can't remember it was soo long ago!)
