What does the upgraded firmware actually do to "avoid" the execution of homebrew software? I'm interested in knowing that.

[edit]Misread you. Read this and then the summary at the bottom

I can explain that for you. First, to understand why homebrew works on v1.0 psps...

Leaked documents from Sony showed that by placing a file called 'eboot.pbp' into the memory card game folder, you could execute the program. Along with these documents came the PSPSDK toolchain that included all the functions/example functions for the PSP (most likely leaked from a developer). So, with the toolchain and functions we managed to get hello world applications running, and so on from there.

As for v1.5 psps,

The function printf() had a poorly designed parser. So, when two folders were placed in the memory card, named (for example) myapp and myapp%, the game would load the icon/text for myapp%, but wouldn't load the stuff for myapp (the actual program), as they disabled that. However, the badly written parser took out the % from the folder name and as a result executed myapp, the program.

And now, someone has claimed to be able to downgrade psp v1.51 and v1.52. Can't wait to see how that turns out.

[reedit]Now, they changed the parser that it still can load icons/titles for the applications, but the exploit for removing % by the printf() parser has been removed. As such, we are waiting for a new way to execute.

I might go buy one. I'm think Ridge Racer and Toca 2. I had Lumines with my old one. Any other suggestions?

I would suggest 'Twisted Metal Head-On.'

Nice visuals + great gameplay + online multiplayer = win. wink.gif

read somewhere europe got 1.52

Europe did get 1.52 preinstalled but on the demo disk in the value pack you can update to 2.00 there so we are not left out on the updates. I suppose it would of delayed the launch if they tried to put 2.00 preinstalled on the PSP so they just put it on the demo disk. However, they did need to get 1.52 installed to avoid homebrew applications to be run on it which is a little disappointing.

And yes, as I said earlier EU PSPs were most likely going to come out with 1.52 and a seperate update in the umd disk.

Anyone with 2.0 installed tried using WinPSPortal? It's pretty awesome actually. www.winpsportal.com you can even see a demo.

Basically it's a webpage you can install onto the PSP and use as a homepage, and it has a functioning Windows styled interface.

It takes roughly an hour and a half to charge from 0-100%. PSPs come with a 25% charge already, I believe, so it should be even less.

And yes, WinPSPortal is pretty awesome looking. I just won't upgrade until homebrew comes out on 2.0, as it is fantastic to play Chrono Trigger on long road trips.

Oh, and WinPSPortal is quite awesome. Now I don't have to turn on the WiFi card to find a God of War FAQ, because God mode in it is impossibly hard.

So how do you get those points anyways? By registering your Sony products?

Nope, its for the retail people... You would do training for their products and take a quiz and each quiz would be worth 100-300 points... Same goes for Playstation(Which only allows you to get psp/ps2 games), but Microsoft lets you get games to software...

RPoints? By buying through them & they give you cashback & by using the Boots vouchers on the vouchers page for triple points all which makes the PSP cost £143.

It's not like that GET A PSP FREE!?!?"?"!? bollocks. It's totally legit.

Wipeout is a great racer. Shame I had to sell that/twisted metal back in order to get another PSP.

As I've said before, Twisted Metal Head-On is great. I also recommend Metal Gear AC!D if you're into strategy games.

I heard that Metal Geard ACID sucked because of the whole card game thing, but that's just my nephews opinion. (Hehe I think it's so cool having a nephew now)

I liked Ridge Racer a little bit better than Wipeout - Pure. Just the whole idea of going 400 km/h doesnt really appeal to me, I like the more realistic games. Another really good games is NFL Street for the PSP, that is until Madden 06 comes out for it.
