This is the official PSP discussion topic. A little late, I know, but with the introduction of the 2.0 PSP firmware and the impending release of EuroPSP, I figured I'd write a resource topic addressing all of the most commonly asked questions as well as answer questions and provide downloads for the PSP.

The list would f*ck up the topic, so only a link.

MEDIA MAP:

Now, here is the soul of the PSP. It doesn't just play games, it plays music, videos, and displays photos.

user posted image

This hierarchy map should show you what you should see when you sync up.

Also note: You can create extra folders INSIDE the music folder to organize music, if you so wish.

Wallpapers/Themes

- The screen resolution is 480x272. Any image this size works perfectly as a wallpaper.

- This only works with PSP 2.0 firmware.

- Put all wallpapers in your PHOTOS folder.

Setting a Wallpaper:

1. Place picture of choice into Photos folder.

2. Go to System->Theme Settings.

3. Select Wallpaper>Use.

4. Go to the photo in the browser.

5. Push X to display the image fullscreen.

6. Push TRIANGLE to bring up commands. Top Row, Second Button is "Set as Wallpaper".

7. voila.

If you liked a certain month's theme on the PSP, you can select it from the System>Themes menu. You can also choose to have it rotate every month, like it used to.

SYNCING UP:

This may not be the proper term, but here is how to link your PSP and PC.

1. Acquire a mini-B type USB cable. These are standard for ALL Sony digital cameras and videocams, so if you own any Sony cams, you should have one.

2. Plug the USB cable into the top of the PSP, and connect the other end (the larger end) to your computer's USB port.

3. Navigate to System>USB Connection. Push X.

4. If done correctly, you should hear a noise (if on XP pro) indicating success. Either choose the autoplay feature to open the folder, or go to My Computer>Removable Disk (Windoze should assign a letter).

Enjoi.

CONVERSION:

http://www.pspvideo9.com/

I've used Rapiz, and several other converters, and this is hands-down the best I've used. Not only does it have a plethora of options for audio/videophiles, but it is easy to use and offers a copy utility to automatically move converted files to your PSP. Follow the provided instructions and you're good to go.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I ADD?

On the checklist is:

•add wallpapers for download

•add EMULATOR section.

•add misc homebrew

•add more resource links

•add game review links, plus personal reviews

•add more indepth customization for older firmwares

•add links to firmware and homebrew downloads

•ADD WIRELESS/MULTIPLAYER JUNK

This is a kick ass topic! Nice job on those two images, they look really nice. I'd like to add something about the mini-B type USB cable though. I bought a Rio mp3 player in November and to my enjoyment I realized that it was a mini-B type USB cable. Just letting you know.

Many digital cameras also use mini-b usb cables. So if you have a digital camera, check out the usb cable to see if it fits before you go buy one. The usb cable is the most important accessory for the PSP. Without it I would feel I wasted my money on my psp big time. Definetly worth the $10, and plus it's a cool white one, I've never seen a white usb cable before.

Another recommended accessory is the Earsub headphones by Pelican. I picked up a pair at Circuit City for $20. They require a PSP to be used though, since it has the connecter like the remote the PSP comes with, becasue thats how power gets to the amp (dosen't take batteries) that makes the headphones sound so good. They feel a bit awkward at first, because they go so far in your ear, but thats how you get such great sound. If you're looking for a pair that you can use with something else that has a regular 1/8in connector and not the little add on that it has, I've seen ones that have that, but have a little box that takes AAA batteries, those were $30. I've been wanting to get a PSP for quite a while now. But I'm waiting for more games, thought there are games now that already caught my attention. Also all the extra possibilites that you can do with the PSP is pretty sweet. The browser is a nice plus, even though I don't think I'll be able to use it. The only real thing stopping me from getting one is the price, I'd say it will be about the $280 area with taxex. Then a 1 GB memory card is like another $120. I was hoping for a price drop but it seems so far away. So I want to ask you all PSP owners, is it really worth it?

Nice job anuj... loving the topic. smile.gif

@Made: It is really worth it. The PSP doubles anywhere between a portable gaming console, to an MP3 player, to an internet browser. I spent the money on it, and I've never been happier. It's so unique, I mean, there's nothing else like it on the market. Well worth it. You won't be disappointed. There are a few games out that should out your interest, too.

I'm hesitant about upgrading to 2.0 since I can't use the internet on the PSP because I don't have a wireless router. I probably will upgrade if people can get homebrews applications and emulators to work on it.

So, what are some things you guys have on your PSP? I have SNES9X, Smash PSP, PSPersonalize, a few Nike basketball commercials, no music (mp3 player), and a bunch of various pictures.

I want a PSP now on the sole fact that you can have different wallpapers.

Right now, I'd say no. While I like the new update and the different features, I don't think the PSP's game library is too great.

In my opinion, the PSP needs a good first person shooter or platformer. Both Coded Arms and Dead to Rights got horrible reviews, so I'm waiting for Death Jr and GTA: Liberty City Stories.

Also, remember that the PlayStation Portable is a gaming machine at heat, with the added capabilities of playing music and watching movies, etc., so it's not trying to replace the iPod or portable DVD player.

Don't count on a price drop just yet. Save up your money, and wait until there are reports of the different defects being fixed.

You could change wallpapers before 2.0 came out. All you have to do is download PSPersonalize and drop the folders in your game section. Then you put the wallpaper you want in the main directory of your PSP and load it via your PSP. It's pretty easy actually.

Heh, this is awesome. I have nes/snes with a huge amount of games (including ones from when I was growing up -- very sentimental).

Would anyone happen to have the files to open up more Doom/D2 levels? I own both, but have no clue how to get the files.

I don't think there are more files to use for the PSP version of Doom out there.

The wad files that come with the Doom v0.04 release are freeware now, and only the first 5 levels of Doom 1. I was talking about all the wad files from Doom/Doom2.

Oh, and everyone should get Mortal Kombat, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros II.

Technical Difficulty

I got my PSP a couple months ago for my birthday, it's pretty sweet.

If the DVD/UMD's weren't so goddamn expensive it would be cooler, but they're even more expensive than a normal DVD. Crazy.

They need to start coming out with alot more games, I'm not feeling the current ones.

Pretty much the only downside to the PSP is how sh*tty the sound is. If that was better, the PSP would be better.

I'm pleased with the sound. It could stand to be quiter though, one bar is still too loud for one bar, and all the way up isn't really loud either. But at least it's stereo. Try getting the 5.1 surround headphones, I heard they are good, but $100 is a bit much.

I have a pair of Sony MDR-EX71s that I bought last year for about $50. They don't sound half bad, and I think you can get them for around ~$25 online.

Wrong reaction. I made a big post about the Earsubs a little bit up. The headphones are good, you should look around for reviews, it's hard to come upon a bad one for them. It's not really a subwoofer in your ear either, they just say that to get people to buy it. No sub could be that small, the lowest frequency response you could get is like 20khz.

I went to Wal-Mart the other day and I glanced at the UMD movies and they had a bunch of movies for $15 which is pretty good since most normal DVD's are about $20.

Most UMDs are $30 elsewhere. I've seen them fr $15 at Circuit City though.

I notiecd Circuit City carries PSP accessories for the cheapest. Usualy like $20 for the same thing Best Buy has for $30, for example.

I'm probably going to get a DVD from Wal-Mart soon considering they're so cheap right now. I didn't plan on buying any DVD's for the PSP though since I have my PS2 and a DVD player for that. When I went there the other day to buy a game, this girl that worked there was like, "OMG, BUY APE ESCAPE!!!!"

Well, I've never played it long enough for the battery to actually die. You might want to skim this article though. It really just depends what you are doing on the PSP.
