they should rename it to...another crapware release thats gonna be exploited to hell. not to mention the DRM thats going to be implemented. microshaft should choke on their own vomit for releasing something that is so protected of media. its not to that point yet and exactly why im not even gonna trial vista. pure corporate retardation.

*walks out of virtual room mumbling about how stupid microsh*t is*

its a name people.....blimey, not that important.

just to let you know i'm typing this from Vista Beta 1 and its great.

I couldn't care what it was called, if it works as well as i need it to, then i have no problem with it.

and i'm wondering.....if this was made by someone else other than microsoft, would everyone still hate it confused.gif

I don't believe that.

I think some proof is in order...

It's well known that Vista Beta 1 has been leaked on most major torrent directories. It's also well known that it's a buggy pile of sh*t, only meant for developers to get to know the system.

It seems like a combination of a rip-off of OS X and Linux. Why don't they just make an OS based on Unix already?

Big W00T. I had 4600, first version with "Glass Transparency"... And my copy was legit. I will be getting Vista 1 shortly, when I do, i'll do screenies and vids if you all want them.

Oh, so XP does come from Experience. I remembered hearing it referred to as Windows Experience back in 2001, but I wasn't sure if it was correct.

I sure had a wonderful Windows Experence back in 2001, urgh. As it stands, these "wonderful" features isn't going to make my shell out 300+ just for this. Still when I get I new computer, it would be nice if this didn't have as many problems as I had with XP back in 2001 if I get Vista. It will take a while to get used to the name Vista, just as it did with XP.

As Devyl pointed out or something, I think it was him anyway, all the codenames of Windows operating systems are trails on some mountian or something.

@Dev, since you get to test god damn everything (And you have your damn 7800 GTX's in SLI with the copper blocks, too) let me know how it runs and all.

ive heard that also. it has something to do with the mountains around there. thats probably the only thing semi-cool that m$ has ever done. well, that and make the XBOX so easy to mod.

Yes, the beta versions of Windows are codenamed after a mountain range in British Columbia:

Q: What's up with the name Longhorn?

A: The name wasn't chosen randomly. Remember that Windows XP was code-named Whistler and the next major version of Windows is code-named Blackcomb. Both of these names come from ski areas in British Columbia, close to Microsoft's headquarters. At the foot of Whistler Mountain, there is a saloon named Longhorn that serves the local skiing population. So if you're ever in the area and want to take in some local color, Longhorn is a nice stop… after you're done with Whistler.

Whistler mountain is some good snowboarding smile.gif

But yeah, I'd like to hear a little bit more on the performance of this before I upgrade. Windows XP is fine for me as it is, and unless they have something really groundbreakingly cool, I'll stay with xp for a while.

It's okay, Microsoft. One part of recovery is admitting you have a problem. smile.gif

The new version of mspaint included has nice PNG compression, as well. wink.gif

Since your not a developer and Vista isnt public yet, I would suggest that you take those down because the only way you got this OS is by pirating it.

Since your not a developer

I love how you automatically assume I don't rightfully own the beta (or that I even own it, which I don't).

Hint: I work in the IT department. Plenty of my colleagues have the beta, and if I were to sign up I would've recieved it as well. Either way, my testing was done rightfully within the law.

Either that or you refuse to answer the question. Don't ask, don't tell is the policy here. Why, crazydude should be banned for this hideous infraction!

The IE7 in Vista looks very similar to that of it in XP.

Could you post any more screens of the Control Panel, Windows Media Player, or an XP app runnng? Do native XP Games run?

I don't have access to it at the moment, so I can't supply any requested screenshots.

Everything is basically identical to XP at the moment, it seems. The only differences are within the windowing system (especially the layout of the file explorer) and a few new security features and settings within the Control Panel.

Windows Media Player is version 10 and looks exactly like it does in XP. All XP apps work fine and run exactly like they do in XP. I'd be surprised if they actually changed anything about the OS except it's theme and windowing system.

I'd prefer an OS that doesn't have applications written by the same people ( or company ), because then I have an OS that keeps itself opinionless.

For instance; IE7 has the MSN search, since Microsoft owns both. Where as, Mozilla doesn't own Google or any other search engines in anyway ( perhaps one that searches their own site ). And both Google and MSN Search can be used with Firefox.

Note: I haven't tried IE7, so I can't say IE7 doesn't allow Google to be it's search engine. Anyone who have tried it, please confirm/deny this.

Posting from IE7 in XP, I can confirm that it allows you to use AOl, Ask Jeeves, MSN, Google, or Yahoo, by default. Mine had Yahoo set as default, but I can't confirm that was the default in the install, as it imported IE settings I've never touched.

IE7 seems to have plenty of issues with tabs. I have a second tab open and I tried to go to google, then went back to this one, and it loaded google in this one and refuses to load anything in the second one. Performance in the Acid2 test is even worse then in IE6 under XP. Also, it won't allow me to move the Title menu or other menu buttons about the bar where the back/forward buttons are with the title bar. They are forced to be below it, and the tab bar. The new tab button in the form of a small tab is also poor, in my opinion. Ill post a screenshot as well. Also, sites like Yahoo Mail that use User Agent Strings, tell me my browser is unsupported and I need to go to their old version in plain HTML.

Got the WVista Beta disk. I tell ya, it takes OSX and shoves it in Apple's face. It is real nice. And all my PC drivers did not need to be installed. Seriousily, if they do not pack it with DRM,I am going to make sure I get this.

From what I've seen and read about it it offers almost nothing exclusive over OS X, except for the advantage, to some, that it retains the over-used Windows feel. And I certainly don't see an open-sourced Mach Kernel base for it...

Honestly, Microsoft has a lot they can nail with this OS, and a lot they can royally f*ck up. If they retain launch driver issues like XP had, then they will certainly not show strong. If they. however, take a page out of the Linux book, and program in an ndiswrapper-esque driver loader that can use old drivers through a compatibility command reinterpreter, similar even to Apple's Rosetta, or something like WINE, then they can get serious geeks to be willing to give them a pat on the back. They need to ensure good compatibility as well, not to mention the expectations of 64-bit support in the OS. With a monopoly like theirs, and a new OS release, Microsoft is actually more vulnerable then if they had a smaller user base. The large amount of users forces them to support tons of applications and protocols and whatever someone might have thrown into their old OS's, and resupporting all of it won't be easy.

I know my computer's will be dual-booting XP Vista for a long time after release, and if Apple boxes somehow will allow me to support booting other x86 operating systems, probably all 3. I remain skeptical about the sucess of Vista. Microsoft is at such a colatile point with this release that it could make or break their foothold on the market.

Im sorry I assumed that you didnt get the OS legally. I should have asked how you got Vista without making that assumption.

My appologies...

Heh, hope you have enough space.

We tried installing on a 4 GB virtual drive (4 GB is usually enough for any VM) and Windows Vista told us there wasn't enough room. It takes up about 3.2 GB upon installation, so I supposed 5 GB should suffice.

I should be fine. My XP x64 drive has 12 GB free, XP Pro has 10 GB free, and my Linux partition has a good 20+ GB free.

Outstanding how those "you are on xxx.xxx.xxx, you are using xp, ie6, etc" signatures say I'm using Netscape 4..... not IE7 (or mozilla at least)

my opinion: its a piece of sh*t in its current state.

wait for beta 2

* games run very poorly

* network file sharing goes on the fritz

* can't share any folders over network (at least i couldnt figure it out sad.gif )

* while browsing files, explorer likes to lockup very frequently

* couldnt shutdown one time

* none of my programs work on vista cryani.gifmad.gif

* the new WMP (10 Vista Edition?) has a lot of bugs

* its a resource hog

man i hope they leave some cpu power for the games.

It is a beta for a reason. Its not intended to run perfectly and fully support every application and game possible. Its out there for developers to take a look at it and get used to the new operating system.

Since you have a copy, and therefor are in the MSDN program, I would presume you also looked into it from a developers standpoint to take a look at how well it runs some of your programs or those you depend on for programming, and to test how it runs .NET or whatever language you fancy? How well did they run and such? What did you think of Monad? Does it live up to something like bash?

what was said above is basically why it's a beta. and its not like a game beta. this is a whole OS that needs a lot of sh*t to be perfect to run like a released OS. i personally havent messed with it too much because the guy i know who has it is pretty far away and its like meh anyway. whens this thing supposed to be released anyway?

Err, Q4 2006 I think? Its definetly sometime in 2006, and after Mac OS X 10.5 I believe.

EDIT, without actually editing: Wikipedia says the release is officially marked for December 2006.
