ISuck
When GTAIII first came out I played it religously, but after beating the storyline I didn't have much use for it. Through the next two games I always thought GTAIII was better. Upon completion of SA, I wanted to go back and play GTAIII but had lost the disc. Anyways, today a friend let me borrow his XBox version and I now remember what was so great about it. Here it is: The radio -Chatterbox, Double Cleff, Flashback. Although Vice City does have a very cool soundtrack, Chatterbox is what makes this radio the best. Oh yea, and SA radio sucked. Storyline -Working for the mafia rules, hands down. Im not going to go into spoilers and whatnot, but let's just say it's the best and leave it at that. Vice City is close, the idea of working your way up to rule the city was cool, but this plot had much more twists and turns. Oh yea, and SA storyline sucked Graphics -Im not a graphics wizz, but it seems plain as day to me that the graphics in GTAIII are supreme, the look of the cars is where it really shows. Vice city always seemed blurry to me, even if you weren't going fast. San Andreas was ok but the new loading was more annoying to me than the loading in the previous two. sh*t just appears right in front of you all the time. Back to graphics, since I really am not into the technical stuff, can someone tell me if the graphics in III were better or if Im just seeing things. Map -Liberty City is without a doubt, the coolest map in any GTA game evar! It's much more detailed than Vice City and the look of it beats out VC and SA. San Andreas was friggin huge. Cool at first, but it becomes annoying having to travel that far to get anywhere. Liberty city's theme and architecture is unbeatable too. Gangs -Gangs truly dominate GTAIII and are the funnest part of the game. Some gangs hate you and venturing through their turf is a feat in itself, other gangs hate each other and get into random fights on the streets right in front of you. The Mafia, Yakuza, and Triads beat out any other gang in VC or SA. VC was embarassing. Two latino gangs that sucked and couldn't shoot straight. SA was a little bit better but how about some diversity? Street gangs were really the only type, while in GTAIII you have Italians, Asians, Columbian, Yardies(wait, where are they from?), etc. This all leads to my next point Gang Cars -No competition here. Gang cars rule, stupid lowriders drool. Mafia Sentinel, Cartel Cruiser, and the Yakuza Stinger are probably my top favorite cars in the trilogy. Vice City's gang cars were stupid, and there were only two of them anyway, and SA's cars almost made me cry. Half the damn game is comprised of lowriders. Maybe one lowrider like a Yardie Lobo, but wtf is up with the 10 diff types of lowriders? I don't think SA had any actual "gang cars" but because all of the gangs were thugs, they had to be cool and ride in lowriders, whose sole purpose is to look cool, which they don't. Lowriders suck at turning, braking, and going forward. "Oh let me hop in my getaway lowrider...wait, what the f*ck can I get away from in this POS" In conclusion, GTAIII rules. Iron Man
GTA 3 is the best. epecially with the main character. Fido (i know its not his realy name so STFU) - if he could speak, i doubt he would be as mouthy as Tommy and CJ. Claude kept his head stright, and concentrated on his goal. he would get his message across by silencing the problem. he would always do what he was told to do. Tommy Vercetti - This guy was cool. admit it. but there were times when you were like "just shut up already!" i.e Keep your Friends Close. he would never stop talking. especiall the parts where you had to kill lance and Sonny. ok, it was cool with some stuff he said, but after a while, it just got old. CJ - i havent played SA yet so im not gonna say anything about CJ. but from what i've heard, he is a loud mouth whiner. (off topic, but is this dude Newman from seinfeld???) You're dead on, I liked Tommy Vercetti but he did get talkative. CJ, in short, is a pussy, and Rockstar games pussified him very well. Girlfriends, "sex appeal", and just the general fact that he is a bitch to someone throughout the entire game really doesn't fit the Grand Theft Auto character well. HeliPilot
I must agree that GTAIII for me at least, is the best in the series. I really wish there was a way to add all the new stuff to GTAIII, like all the races, robberies, stadium events, properties, mini-games, etc-etc, and I would like a reason to play other than carjacking and killing, more replyability really. Simply because Liberty City rules. And the story, the story rocks. Claude is the man. A character that you became part of, not just played as. And to Isuck, I believe you are correct in stating the graphics are better in GTAIII, they seem that way to me also. Maybe it's just the atmosphere, but GTAIII looks the best. I just started playing it again after a year to enjoy the story one more time. VC is great, but as said previously, not nearly enough gang activity. The only gang really worth fighting with is the Hatians. And the city was just not quite big enough. Great races, stadium events, robberies. And Tommy is one cool customer. SA is big, almost too big. Great game, more than enough mini-games and side missions to keep me interested for a long time, but a bad story with characters you just dont give a darn about, except Big Smoke. I wanted to cap Sweet on the first mission. I couldn't get through the story missions fast enough to unlock all the fun side missions and mini-games. What I'm saying is that they are all good, but GTAIII is excellent. I guess some things can't be improved on.

But lucky for us the modding community is almost 100% finished with the Liberty City mod for the Vice City engine. It brings the Bikes, helis, and planes to Liberty. Only problem is that the atmosphere isn't quite right yet, the graphics feel alot like VC. Not a slam to the modders of LC, you can only do so much with the VC engine. There is at least 1 song on every station I like at any given time, something that can't be said about GTA3 Storyline -I love SA's storyline, but you're right the Mafia is better. Which is why Vice has the best storyline. Graphics -Get the PC version and you'll see SA is the best. Also, VC had about the same graphics as GTA3 is you knew how to edit options. On the PS2 version, pause the game and under screen, turn off trails and it won't be blurry. Map -Are you insane? I love SA. Crusing down the LV strip. BMXing down the Santa Maria peir. Costing down the hills of SF. Just missing the canyons when flying in the desert. Climbing the badlands' mountains. It goes in map goodness: 1. SA 2. LC 3. VC Gang Cars -Learn your facts. VC had 5; Voodoo, Cuban Hermes, Gang Burrito, Angel, and Diaz s gang drove Comets. Also, I think SA has over 10 gang cars because every gang has two cars. In Conclusion, shut up. ISuck
The Radio-I love SA radio. There is at least 1 song on every station I like at any given time, something that can't be said about GTA3 Sorry, Chatterbox takes the cake, and double cleff is perfect GTA music. I like some of the SA radio, namely the Dust and K-Rose, but they still dont match up to Chatterbox. The rest of SA radio is friggin annoying. Contemporary hip hop, classic hip hop, soul, groove can all fit into one category if they're going to place classic rock in one category. Storyline-I love SA's storyline, but you're right the Mafia is better. Which is why Vice has the best storyline. Vice comes in a very close second to GTAIIIs in my opinion. SAs seemed alright throughout the game until I got to the end and thought back on it. Graphics-Get the PC version and you'll see SA is the best. Also, VC had about the same graphics as GTA3 is you knew how to edit options. On the PS2 version, pause the game and under screen, turn off trails and it won't be blurry. I like the trails but it is a little overdone so yea, I turn them off when I can. Map-Are you insane? I love SA. Crusing down the LV strip. BMXing down the Santa Maria peir. Costing down the hills of SF. Just missing the canyons when flying in the desert. Climbing the badlands' mountains. It goes in map goodness: 1. SA 2. LC 3. VC At first, I liked it better too. I like Mount Chiliad the most but the whole scenary has gotten redundant of me. If you've ever read my posts you'll know I HATE the beachy/sunny type theme. In San Andreas, even when it's raining it seems sunny. I didn't like Vice City for this reason, because its pretty much based in Miami. Now they come out with San Andreas based in California which has ::shock:: a beachy/sunny theme. Liberty City is based in New York I believe and is much darker. Just personal opinion. Gang Cars-Learn your facts. VC had 5; Voodoo, Cuban Hermes, Gang Burrito, Angel, and Diaz s gang drove Comets. Also, I think SA has over 10 gang cars because every gang has two cars. All extremely sh*tty that dont even compare to the Mafia Sentinel. In Conclusion, shut up. I love all GTAs, but San Andreas Freaking Rules!!!! Before it came out, I told myself I wasn't going to buy it. Im just not attracted to anything about the theme or scenery. As said before, Im sick of the beachy thing, the early 90s was possibly the most unexciting period in history(if we're going to go back in time, choose a better time), and the "gangsta" thing is a real turnoff too. But I bought it, beat it, put it down, got 100% this past week, and am now enjoying playing VC and GTAIII
GTA_kev
GTA3 did have the best storyline it was personal and dark. The graphics were good but comapred to Vice City..you know what. I thought the fire graphics in GTA3 were a lot better than any of the rest of them. The music in the radio stations were great. I do admit VC is still the king of the soundracks. Gaijin
For the most part, I agree, however... The Radio Yes, Liberty has the best soundtrack by far. Personally, I think it can be a little repetitive due to lack of songs, but the songs that are there are all great. Chatterbox was funny, but WCTR was funnier, IMO. Rise FM and Double Cleff are the two greatest radio stations in GTA history. Storyline Keep in mind...you only work for the Mafia during the first part of the story. Even in SA you did some mob jobs. The majority of the game is spent working for some branch of the Japanese Yakuza. GTA3 may be filled with more twists, but the characters weren't very recognizable or likeable. Ask me who "Marty Chonks" is in 3 years and I won't answer...ask me who "The Truth" is and an instant image of said character will come to mind. Graphics It's my personal opinion that no one GTA has better graphics than the other...(excluding the top-down games) They're all just done with different styles, you know? Map I played and beat SA before playing GTA3 and I was absolutely disgusted to know that GTA3 does't have an "overall" map that you an access from the pause screen, place markers on it, etc. GTA3 has the worst map in the trilogy. Gangs Yes, there is so much diversity among gangs...however, it's kinda hard to take notice when they're trying to kill you. I found GTA3 to be an overly hostile environment; you couldn't even think about strolling the streets of Portland, taking in the ambiance, because you won't last 1 minute with Mafia shotguns on your tail. In SA you had your violent gangs, yes, but you could escape them in another district, or wipe them out all together. The gangs were cool, but the fact that they all hate you is not. Gang Cars They were alright...I won't commit suicide if a "Triad Fish Van" isn't included in the next GTA, but some of the cars like the Cartel Cruiser and Mafia Sentinal were pretty neat. In conclusion, GTA3 rocks hard, but not as hard as the poster of this thread would have you beleive.
GTA Nation Administrator
Radio: all three games had good radio stations, I couldnt say that a particular game had better ones. Story Line: dont get me wrong, Claude is cool, but the fact that he didnt say a word the whole time... Tommy Vercetti had some personality that complimented the story line, and I think Claude didnt really explain any personal reasons for his actions, he just did as he was told. Somethings didnt relate to the plot too, why was he working for the yakuza and Donald Love so long? It seemed like he was just running errends for some people. Graphics: I didnt think they were that great in GTA3, thats just my opinion. Map: The map was cool, but VCs was cool too, and San Andreas was impresive for its size and everything. I mean most citys arent islands, in SA, you could actually drive out of town Gangs: VCs gangs sucked, SAs werent bad, but I think GTA2 had the best gangs Gang Cars: Again I think GTA2 had the best gang cars, but its not like gangsters really dirve all the same cars. In SA, people actually had different cars in different colors and everything rather than everyone driving the same exact thing My Conclusion, I wouldnt say that any GTA game is better than another one, except GTA2, maybe i'll write a big long list about why that one is so great later. Squiddy
Bigger is not always better. In my opionion that fits good with san andreas. Before I continue I have to admit that I didn't played it a lot as it doesn't run on my pc so good. But what I have seen on my monitor and from screenshots of other players should suffice. Well, there are some really nice places in san andreas, too bad I didn't visit the casinos yet, but it looks great on the screenshots. But while there are detailed places in san andreas, the majority of the map is just thrown together without love. Of course it's much bigger than the previous GTAs, but I myself would prefer a little, detailed town full of life. That's what I like in GTA3, a little nice map, but it looks so much more detailed than san andreas. One thing we can't really discuss here is the atmosphere because that's someone likes and another one not. I don't like the theme of san andreas, it's just to bright and nice. A gangster for me means a man walking through dark alleys for examples. My english isn't pretty good but I hope you get the point. In GTA3 a crime was something you didn't see coming, it's not that you walk out of your house on a sunny sunday morning and just kill some gang members on the street. And yes, I really like the dark, that's why I like gta3. Vice City was a really bright and sunny city, acceptable for the setting. But san andreas, I can't really describe it. It's not really bright and sunny, but not even dark, somewhat dirty. And remember one thing, just because san andreas has 10 gang cars and gta3 less, doesn't makes it better automaticly. I prefer quality over quantity. GTA mods VC hud GTAreactor ~ DeviantArt ~
tommy vercetti guy
Better than SA -I liked how the Landstalker handled, it tipped over easily and have other characteristics like a real SUV. In SA, the Landstalker handles like a 4-seater car rather than an SUV. -There were newspapers and leafs on the flloor and they would get blown away constantly, but SA is a literless place. -The missions were a challenge. In SA, I beat the game in a week and said to myself, "Thats all they got?" -GTA3 had a change into a ped code Better than VC Liberty City was a way better map than Vice City. Every island hads its own characteristics and they are all joined together by bridges, a tunnel and the subway. VC's map is mostly flat and water, makes we wonder why Tommy is comfortable living in a town that is 1/2 water and he cant swim. Better than both -GTA3 had the Kuruma, one of the coolest 4-seater car ever. -The gangs are way better than GTA VC or SA gangs. The ones in GTA have serious weapons, especially the Mafia. In GTA VC and SA, the gangs are sh*t, why should i be afriad of ballas or hatians if they only pack a measly pistol. Some of the gang cars for GTA3 are cool modified versions of the original vehicles, but they only use that car. It would have been better if they had 2-3 differnt vehicles to drive like in SA. -You can change the on foot camera and in vehicle camera to an up-down veiw like in the classic GTAs. Ali_Santana
the reason why its better is the style, the theme, the call it how u want. just look at the ending...basicly it ends where it started haha no saving the world sh*t and living happily ever after hahaha..and of course the cherry on top - shooting that bitch, just like that, like drinking a glass of cold water on a hot day mwahaha. gta3 is full of some (more or less) hidden humour while the characters and the storyline is a true film noir. of course the follwing gtas brought some improvements but that dont makes gta3 any worse. NoProblemToKillYou
The main reason why GTA3 is better than SA is that GTA3 is pure gameplay and story! In SA there are too many sidemissions and nonstory-missions I think. Missions like biking down Mt Chilliad in biker shorts, Bloodring and Kickstart are crap!!!What have they to do with the story? Nothing at all!! In GTA3 there are better story missions which give you the feeling of getting more control in Liberty City. Then there are rampages and RC missions which are kind of funny and belongs to the story in some way. Its stupid that you have to do a lot of race tournaments all over the cities which are required to get 100%. If I want to play a racing game, I buy GT or something. The fact that you have to eat and so on is cool, and it would have been good in GTA3 too. And that you have to spray gang-tags instead of collecting packages is good. I never liked the thing with the packages. Why would there be hidden packages around town? After completing GTA:SA I started over with GTA3 again to play a third time, now striving to get 100%. I appreciate GTA3 very much because of its story and that the game is mainly story and not a lot of odd jobs and side-missions you have to pass. I wished that you would be able to drive/fly more vehicles and planes.
ISuck
I thought they went overboard with the races in GTA:SA too. If something wasn't a race, it had to resemble a race in some way, like being timed. You had the 25 races, then you had the stadium races, then you had Mt Chiliad races, and so on and so on. The missions weren't diverse enough. In no way do I hate SA, I mean I obviously liked it enough to rack up some insane amount of playing time on it. But when its done, all the additions arent good enough to make it the best.
NoProblemToKillYou
I think there are to much additions in SA. I liked it to, when It was released I was one of the first to have it! And I was possessed of playing it. No doubt. But I was disappointed about all those side missions. Some of them are time-robbing, complicated and unnecessary. Why should CJ´s player stats rise just because he succeeded to cycle down mt chiliad three times?? The guy in GTA3 mostly handled crimes and such stuff, and not dating girls and working as a courier. robert_malpas
I agree. SA is fantastic, but sometimes comes across as too big. GTA3 is the right size.
F-s-X
I might aswell give my opinion on this. The characters in GTA3 was great, most people say that Claude just did his mission and so on, but an creative mind can see so much more. they don't see a quiet guy who does what he is told, they see so much more. And all of the people you worked for, has something special about them. The soryline was great, it made you have to think a little for yourself to, a little mysterius. The gameplay was lovely, not all that rubbish in SA, but real gameplay. The gangs in GTA3 are by far the greatest thing R* has done. Who dosen't love to go to Saint Marks and try to get out of there alive. Or in the beginning help out the Mafia on the line between Saint Marks and Hepburn Heights. They managed to make the gangs seem alive. The graphics are really good for thinking when it was made. Ateast compared to VC and SA. And the cars seemed to look alot better in GTA than in VC and SA. The size there is nothing wrong to in GTA3, it is perfect, I can still get lost in the third island. R* manage to make a masterpiece that nothing can beat. I agree with you that there is more to Claude than meets the eye...but you apparently didn't see fit to share what you saw in Claude that makes him special. As for the third island...if you're still getting lost there, I think that's a bad thing. The island is nonsensical.
NoProblemToKillYou
Agree, Shoreside Vale is easy to get lost in. The only sad thing in GTA3 was the "purple-nine glitch" which happened to me. But otherwise it is a great game. I have more fun at playing GTA3 than SA.
Dr Doidberg
gta3 is only better because there is not much to do, but there is enough extra things to do besides missions. I mean the import/export garages were possible to do, in sa if you were in los santos, jesus thats a long drive to get to san fierro. SA is waay to big, and there is too much to do to get 100% GTA3 just had that feeling to it which made it better and its so hard to explain. NoProblemToKillYou
The guy in GTA3 (I refuse to call him Claude) receives a mission and doesnt say anything. And this is good because you (who is playing) have to listen to what the different "employers" have to say, and then do the mission. The cutscenes are not very long, they only contains the most important information you need to do the mission. In SA I often break the cutscene for CJ´s enerving: "eh...you know man thats f***ed up...man...eh...yo...gangsta!!!" I dont want to hear this. I know, the story is about being gangsta in the ghetto and so on, but it was too much. This is the good thing about GTA3. Short and precisly given missions and then full gameplay. Not a lot of "homeboy-gangsta-s**t" before playing a mission. Plus that there were a lot of missions which only were cutscene-missions so you didnt have to do anything. For the first time I played I listened and listened to CJ, and suddenly the game said: "mission passed respect +. Waste of time
da gta master
GTA3 is the best hands down. Heres a list of reasons: 1. The theme Liberty City was dark just like a city riddled with crime would look and feel like. Compare LC to VC and SA and it would definitely show that LC looks the best. There was always a feel of mystery in GTA3 e.g the unfinished tunnels and such which made the game a whole lot funner. 2. Graphics In GTA3 they werent to bothered with the graphics. In SA thats all they thought about. In VC they improved a bit but werent to bothered. 3. Radio GTA3 radio is the best, totally the best. All of them were funny and quite good music on. In VC radio was ok but lacked humour. In SA there were way to many radio stations and all the music was boring, only one or two songs caught my fancy and I could never listen to them because there was to longer wait because of the huge amount of songs. 4. Story GTA3s story was the best ever. You get betrayed by the Mafia I mean how cool is that? Your gf shoots you while your robbing a bank. GTA3 has the best storyline. Vc was to short and SA was to big. 5. Characters Claude was the best, hes the sort of person who takes no s**t. And the fact that he doesnt talk is better, he doesnt babble on like Tommy or CJ. Now come on, Cj was a pussy. 6. Weapons VC had probably some of the best weapons but to much of a choice and way to much choice in SA. GTA3 just had a certain amounts of weapons and a space for all, which is better. 7. Cars Four words: Kuruma, Cheetah, Mafia Sentinel 8. Map Not to big, not to small
