Mxyzptlk
Its not exactly a BIG defference is it? You only have to be 1 year older... The difference isn't the ages, but retail stores reluctance to carry games with AO labels.
Pumpkin Zone
Alright good, i've just never noticed it then. But it is pretty bad, even though its only there for about 5 seconds.

RichD7
never thought I hear myself say this (or should that be see myself type this...) but the UK actually has LESS censorship than the US... and I'm glad I'm here (believe me, it's not often I say that, er, type that).  So just to sum up... here's one thing you can't buy in the US "over the counter"  Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas (because of the sex scene)  and here's one thing you can buy:  Hardcore porn.  Both are now for adults so why can't both be stocked and sold? I'm really confused on this one. What's the big deal for your stores to sell AO games?  Please someone explain this... I really thought the UK led the way in draconian rulings (16 to have sex, 18 to watch it).  Rich  ps: on a side note, get your consoles chipped and then order the UK versions. Can't think you'd be breaking any laws as the age limit will still be the same!

When you asked why porn can be sold so why not San Andreas then your missing it.  Both can be stocked and sold but on the same shelf is what they are saying.  Walmart dont carry porn and our porn stores dont carry GTA.  Now they need a store that does both.

RichD7
I probably didn't address it well, but I was basically just saying that over here in the UK the 18 certificate is just another rating, whereas it seems this AO rating (even though its the same 18 and only 1 year higher than the M rating) seems to force or allow your stores not to stock and sell it.  Do you think they'd sell it if it read 18 rather than AO? Does the "adults only" mark make them link it to porn in someway? Hope I've asked that a bit better this time...  Rich  ps: I'm sure we have Walmart stores in the UK (if not, they own most of our shops anyway). Does anyone know if they sell GTA SA... if so, that would appear very odd. Exactly the same age rating but can't be sold in the US.
The4thnobleman
It has been a while since I posted...what little bit I did. But I wish to offer up a token of sorts to the anti-Jack regiment...  http://img347.imageshack.us/img347/4283/aaajt3cf.jpg  It was created by a user on the forum I mod and he hopes to see the supporters use it wisely. Power to the game all, may it end with the "Sims" debacle and may EA squash Thompson like the bug he is

The rating system over here is pretty much just a guideline for parents to make informed decisions about what they're buying their child. They're not enforced. And what you said is about the only reason why I can see why retail stores will not sell AO rated games. I guess they figure it has porn in it. Yet...they have no problems selling movies like that one with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. The one where they got caught up in that sex ring deal. It's a double standard.  I don't know, man. Go figure! It's stupid, but I hope that this will change some store's policy. Stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. I couldn't care less about Walmart. I've never bought a game there anyway. RichD7
If I was in the US now, I'd be writing to the stores informing them of the facts and getting them to stock AO titles.  The moral lot are thinking they're winning if shops don't stock AO titles, but if they do, then it's the gaming community that will come out tops after all this. You'll have proper adult games without restrictions, and there will be nothing Thompson and the rest will be able to do about it... as it's them that forced it through in the first place!!!!  Rich
//ghost
I feel sorry for Thompson's children... if he has any. They must live a horrible life without normal games
