njr1489
Yeah, I was wondering what happened with the idea. I'm hoping both are made.

kyeman
We're still going to try for an MMO, although whether we're successful or not will come down to how much we can limit the network data. I don't want to have a majorly laggy game just for the sake of MMO.
Spooky
I'd just like to point out: MMO != MMORPG.
JimC
An MMO style game would be cool! I didn't know SA-MP was possibly going to do that gametype, DM to me doesnt really appeal. I'm not sure how to restrict network traffic, my only idea would be to have some kind of radius around the player where you only recieve data from within that area, I guess theres still the problem of too many people all being in the same area but perhaps you can spawn them all in a different city at the start and with SA being such a big map they should find it hard to all gather in one area. Jfk003
I really want to see a MMO type of gameplay, because this way Sa Mp would stand out of the rest of the mods. As I said in other posts, I'm not interested in a simple deathmatch, there is already battlefield for this (a game where you shoot and use vehicles just for killing would be using like 10 % of the gta gameplay). I mean San Andreas has brought so much more, and it would be so bad not to use it. I believe you will succeed somehow. Even if it's only a server with one city and 32 players on this city, I would be more than happy if it is MMO.
Deathspike
MMO is the best, its just what SA is supposed to be . A huge city, so many possibilities, MMORPG rocks!
f34r
Indeed. MMO does sound more of an "innovative" idea rather than the traditional dethmath option that we have been bombarded with over the months...

MMO does sound more of an "innovative" idea rather than the traditional dethmath option that we have been bombarded with over the months... Its time for something new, since deathmatch has been around for a while, but not in SA. I have an idea though. Make it a deathmatch on the first release with all islands open, and a choice of the 3 islands. After this is finished, work on a second release which includes bug fixes you may have missed, and the MMO version of it, so that way, the server owner can choose of they want a small deathmatch or a big MMO. Véscovo
How would the mmo style vary compared to deathmatch in terms of bandwidth ? Which things would be excluded if any ?
Firebert
I reckon if it were going to be MMO there would have to be races, player owned houses, and a garage that has a respawn for a car that the player has chosen which only that person can access. also stuff like being able to phone people in the game and have a friends list etc which is stored on the server so you can have a character per server kinda like World of Warcraft if you have played it. Véscovo
Who would host the server ? If some no name guy had the server, he might be tempted to reset it at will deleting your status. If anyone have seen admin abuse, it´s me. And I will say this, when you make people cry, they have this tendency to become very nasty . See I doubt the sa-mp team would be willing to sponsor and maintain some huge uber server , I wouldn´t lol.
chomp
yeah, just let the creators pick the admins and whatnot. otherwise, the game will just become a staff buddy nightmare like every other mmorpg. i have seen 3 real admins in any number of games online out there in my whole LIFE. i would suggest removing any privelages from every player, and letting the players choose and start their own games if all of you were'nt so f*cking dumb. but alas, this is the case so you need the admins to tell you what to do and keep some order. dankstatus
Will it be like one server is Los Santos, another server is Las Venturas, etc? it would be kind of boring/lonely/hard with all the cities with only like 12-32-402-5 players..
MuT7
rather than build status and saving on the server and run the risk of the admin reseting, it could be uploaded onto a larger database that could be monitored by the "big" admins (creators and such).....take easier route and save it onto your own hard drive
kyeman
spookie put it best, MMO is not MMORPG. Doesn't seem to have sunk in for some people. We're not making a roll playing game. Since gtat (http://www.gtat.org) has the ability to have over a hundred players on a single server it would classify as an MMO. Yet it has no RPG elements. All we mean by MMO is lots of players. This could be deathmatch/teammatch with lots of players in the game.
Véscovo
But surely you recognize that SA has some RP elements ? Does this mean there will be no statistics involved in your sa-mp mod ?
Drizz
IMO, it should be MMO (RPG), cuz Deathmatch is everywhere and as DM, SA-MP will just look like a copy of MTA... It has 2 be something different, i think. Also, MMO would be great for people who have finished SA storyline, but would like to play something interesting in SanAndreas again (like me), cuz MMO is all about imagination and creativity so we'll b able to make up our own missions, game scenarios and game modes.. You guys know what i mean? DM is not for GTA, cuz its not a game made just for plain n stupid killing and shooting (like counterstrike, quake, and all that bullsh*t) + SanAn was almost RPG... So i hope developers will come up with something interesting
Véscovo
Well I suppose that´s the question that Rockstar is fighting too, how do you carry over the soul of GTA to a multiplayer version. Personally I don´t see it done without loads of bots and pedestrians/NPC vehicles. (not an urging or request for this mod) But on the other hand, a multiplayer version will always be different. So maybe you should do exactly that, aim for something very different.
snok3k
deathmatch, team deathmatch its cool and boring too,plz make a mmo i like that idea Edited July 17, 2005 by snok3k
MuT7
MMO: Massive Multiplayer Online MMORPG: Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Get it? RoninJinn
I personally think that little bits of MMORPG would make it wonderful. Of course, noone wants to get on, and just start running in cirlces shooting an AK-47 at people shouting "I pwn jew. I iZ l33t haXX0rZ!" Maybe including money in the game. With no cheat. So you have to purchase guns. Have a way to make gangs.. that kind of stuff. Just my opinion.
raytard
i used to work on an mmorpg server (graal if youve ever heard of it, a server called atrius, which ahs restarted without me) and our solution to the storage issue of all of these peoples stats in the game was to store it on their hdd(clientside). this would have many advantages, all stats in game (muscle, hitman levels on weapons, money, clothes, etc) would be stored clientside, this way a person can go between servers with his character. hideouts, vehicles, gangs, etc will be serverside, so if you buy a house on xyz server, you wont have it on zyx server. this means no corrupt admin is going to completely destroy your stats/money/ammo reserve/etc. the most he can do is remove whatevr youve purchased on his server. the only downside to this is obvious (and the reson we had to stop using this). poeple are dirty, if their money count is in a txt file on their harddrive, they are going to modify it. we had it one step further though, our game ran through a client, we hosted the file, they downloaded thema s needed( say a locked door in a room) and it was stored there, saving us bandwith and use as anyone who played more than a week put no load on the server other than synching. they started resizing doors, so they could walk past them. they edited their speed and walked really fast, they edited their ammo, weapons, skills, etc to thepoint of a restart. we still host the maps on them (as we rescripted locked doors to a specific ip, so only specified people could acess it) and just store a small text file of every players stats, equips, ammo, etc. this only takes about 25-50kb per player. and again, since the map isnt being hosted all that ahs to be instituted is xyz coordinate synching on the players computer through the host, which requires minimal bandwith. (im not sure how easy or possible this is in the gta engine but i hope some of it gave you an idea for a solution.
Sharperguy
why not combine the best of both? it could run like battle.net where all the players stats are hosted on server but the players have normal games hosted by eachother. Also, we need peds, it would be pointless with no peds unless it was a full MMORPG. Otherwise it would just be a boron and lonely landscape, especialy for household lan games with a small no of players. of course youd have to store you lan char separatly on hard drive if you wanted to have lan games i guess.
