[GTA3+VC+SA] Text Data Files

Introduction

I am creating this topic as a location for all the text-based modifiers to work on figuring out what all the text data files in GTA3, GTAVC and GTASA actually do. There are many ways people can submit information. You can make a post with the results of a couple of tests you have done. You can post links to old threads where parts of files were tested. You could link to web pages with technical information It is just to explain how the files work.

Submit Information

The sorts of things that would be useful are listed below, with examples:-

  • Sections delimiters: peds, cars, objs, weap and heir start sections of default.ide in GTAVC.
  • Identifiers: !, $, %, ^ in handling.cfg for GTASA and partly GTAVC.
  • Full-line and end-of-line comment characters: ; normally for full-line comments, # normally for end-of-line comments?
  • Relationships with other files: gta3.dat with specified .ide and .ipl files, relationships between .ide and .ipl files.
  • Numbers of columns: GTASA handling.cfg animation data has 25 columns.
  • Value seperators: GTA3/VC/SA handling.cfg uses SPACE and TAB chars but can use COMMA (,) immediatly after each value as long as there is a SPACE or TAB after the COMMA.
  • Complex data: GTA3/VC/SA handling.cfg flags data.
Those are some basic examples. This is not for tutorials about how to achieve specific effects with the files. It is just for file format information and to figure out what each file and parameter does as well as how the files relate to each other.

Links

Links to relevant information will go here. Web pages, topics or specific posts might be included:-

(EDIT) If it turns out that each file format is unique enough to be identified programmatically, I will expand my CFG Studio to become a "GTA Studio" for editing all of the text data files in an organised, multiple-grid layout.
