SA User audio formats?

Recommended Posts

Since the game was released I've been trying to figure out if it is possible to allow it to support more user audio formats. In particular open source lossless formats like FLAC and WavPack. Altough others as well if it's possible. Does GTA:SA rely on DirectShow or some other method like an internal decoder for audio? Also, it seems it is coded in somewhere on what file extensions to scan for for user tracks and I'm trying to figure out where that is. Both of these codecs have DirectShow filters available. Can someone please offer some help or info on how it works? I have loads of lossless files and can't use any without encoding to ogg or mp3. Plus these formats seem to use less CPU for decoding than mp3 or ogg. Thanks in advance.

From the manual:

"San Andreas supports Windows Wave (WAV) and Ogg Voribs (OGG) files by default. With the proper codecs installed you can also use MP3, WMA, M4A etc."

So you can use normal .wav files smile.gif But why not compress your files to high quality OGG/MP3 files? 320 kbps sounds great smile.gif

I am well aware of the currently supported formats. I have no plans of converting my 20,000+ lossless files into mp3's or some other lossy format although 320kbps mp3's do sound great. I'm just after some info on how SA reads the audio files or if it's even possible to add support for more codecs. Aside from that, whenever it plays an mp3 the game crashes although I have no 3rd party mp3 decoders installed, only WMP 10.

So can anyone help me out on this? If possible it could even play AAC or MPC formats in the end if it can be done.

EDIT: OK, the formats file extensions the game searches for in the actual EXE. I chose to replace WMA with FLAC and the game now accepts FLAC files as audio, but it can't play them for some reason. I have a good directshow filter installed, hell they even play in Windows Media Player, just not in SA. So I'm back to my original question I think: How does the game read/decode files? Is it internal, and if it's external is it Directshow or some other method?
