TheHeggy
I've had this idea for a while now and just had a question before I seriously considered doing anything with it. This isn't a request either, I'm just curious. How difficult would it be to replace CJ or any other characters in the game with a model like this: From what I understand, I'd really only have to change his animations. Not sure if that's possible or ever will be, but I figure it can't hurt to ask. It shouldn't be too hard to animate the guy though... He's just a Lego man so his movements would be strictly one-directional. (Arms up and down, legs forward and back, head left and right, etc). Getting models in-game is still something everyone is working on, I know... But other than animations I don't see why it couldn't happen. Please educate a character modeling n00blet. Vehicles and buildings would be fairly straight-forward, it's just the character part that's tricky. Edited June 25, 2005 by TheHeggy
dertyjerzian
I too would like to know about this, but it is certainly not on the top of the list. I found out about a program called LeoCAD, not legocad, LeoCAD. It is much like 3dsmax, and exports .3ds files. It is a front end to another library of files containing all lego pieces that i can ever remember seeing as a kid. Very fun app too... www.leocad.org for the front end, win and linux. I'm hoping to make a little lego town myself. And Steve-M seems to be doing pretty well with figuring all of the data side of the maps, we'll have to wait and see. TheHeggy
Yeah, LeoCAD is what I used to export that little Lego dude. I made him in MLCAD though, as it seems more stable for building stuff. Right after I made this thread I found a tutorial on changing character animations in 3DS Max for Vice City, so I know it'll probably be possible to do it with San Andreas as well. For now I suppose I'll have to be happy with just making the models... Deleting all the internal polygons and stuff is a b*tch though.

No rush, though, but I have a lot of time for this lately... You should contact the author of your program and I will contact the author of leoCAD, we can ask if there is any way to, or anything in the works for, exporting without the extra polygons. Or a way to import only the visible faces to 3ds max? What do you think of making the GTA:Lego game? EDIT: And can you post a screen of ML? I'd like to look at it before I check it out, if possible. JernejL
i had a similar idea before and posted it on brickflick (those that made that cool gta vc lego trailer movie) it is here: http://www.brickflick.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3838#3838 aniway, if there are people interested we could actually get this started!! altrough i thought about basing the mod around gtavc engine, because it is better to control and we can export player models for gtavc and san andreas engine still has problems with maps. TheHeggy
Like I said, I'd be gone for 2 or 3 weeks sometime in August while I move to Phoenix, but if there's a lot of people interested in this and willing to help then that'd be awesome. I'm not much of a modeler... But then, that's what LeoCAD and MLDRAW is for Texturing would be a snap too since it's just Lego bricks. If someone's willing to be the "leader" I'd totally join in and help with whatever needs doing. Oh, dertyjerzian, here's what MLDRAW looks like. It doesn't display the model as nicely as in LeoCAD, but it's more stable and I find it's easier for me to build things with it. You can download it from LDraw.org. JernejL
so do we have a plan? TheHeggy
LOL sounds like it. Just let me know what needs to be done Putting everything together with LDRAW or LeoCAD would be fairly straightforward. Fixing them in 3DS Max is the tough part... Internal polygons need to be removed, some faces need to be flipped, edges need to be welded... The upside of all that though is that anyone with the Lego program could assemble the models. Those with some basic understanding of Max or ZModeler would be able to polish them up, so a large portion of the work doesn't require you to be all that skilled with this sort of thing. I just got done playing a round of Lego Star Wars and saw that their character animations don't really stick to what's physically possible for a plastic Lego man to do... Arms moving out sideways from their body, elbows beinding a bit, knees bending... I could make a couple Flash videos of it if anyone's interested. I'm a freelance graphic/web designer so I'd be able to create a sharp looking website if circumstances required it. Creating "Lego-ized" versions of various in-game graphics (billboards, signs, clothing, loading screens etc.) would be easy for me as well. Just let me know what has to be done to get this idea off the ground and I'll do it Edited June 26, 2005 by TheHeggy
JernejL
heh removing the extra faces can be done by editing ldraw's dat files before exporting, then we can export a bunch of these objects into dffs with different colors and get them into moomapper, then we can assemble maps with moomapper.. this would be a pain in the ass for the game to render that much of objects btw.. so we need every building a separate model.. TheHeggy
So would we be re-making Vice City out of Legos, a totally new Lego city, or something made up like Myriad Islands?

Up to you... I'm a noob to the GTA engine, so I'll need help with it's own tendacies and so on. I figure we need a leader, speaking for no-one here, that may end up Delfi, which I would have no problem with whatsoever.

Delfi - Is it infact possible to export those lego models minus the extra unseen polygons? Also, will all of the polys for the lego bumps cause a problem? I can only imagine how the game will take that, and I've been visualizing some nice competition style lego buildings and cars. This takes me way back, this is going to be one of the richest things I've been involved with in quite a while. QJimbo
Wow what an AMAZING idea! You have to do this. Also I wonder if GTA's damage model is good enough to have lego bricks fall off when you damage the car... But yeah geeks love lego so hopefully you should be able to get plenty of talented people working on this
Donald Rack
I know how to use LeoCAD and MLDRAW. I can make stuff in there and give the file to someone who knows what to do with it.
