bigmike21
After playing San Andreas for a week or so now and seeing how many problems users are having with the sound, it appears that this is the biggest problem so far with the game. The other thing that is interesting is that dozens, problems hundreds or maybe even thousands of different users, with different hardware and different settings are getting similar problems. I guess the variances in hardware, settings, etc.. are what causes the problems in the first place. Well, I've read some posts where nothing seems to work, and I'd like to put a thorough explanation of my problem and my attempts for whoever's interested. Here's my system specs... AMD Athlon XP 2500 1 GB RAM 128 MB Geforce FX 5600 SB Live! Windows XP Home Edition Here's my sound problem... The sound will cut out entirely, leaving only the radio or user tracks playing. This will almost certainly occur when raining. All of the usual sounds including dialogue in the cut scenes (very annoying and disappointing while playing) will stay off for varied periods of time. Completing a mission or loading your game back up will bring the sounds back to operation. However, you'll never know when they'll go away again. After reading the sound posts and the "Collected Sound Fixes" post, I began to try different things. Here's what I've tried that hasn't worked... Updating drivers (sound and video) Changing speaker setup and config Downloading the 3.0.6.6 version of eax.dll Changing the values of Emulated, VXD, and WDM in the Registry Making sure "All Effects Off" was on in my EAX Control Panel The only success I've had is with the hardware acceleration slider in DxDiag, but even this success is limited. The sound problem still occurs with Full and Moderate acceleration. On the Low setting it seems to disappear. However, the low acceleration causes the game to lag due to sounds (in-game and user tracks). This is unfortunate...sacrificing performance just to hear sounds? I know my sound card isn't the greatest, and is several years old, so it might be the culprit. But, I just shelled out $70 for a DVD-R drive just so I could play the game and I'm hoping I don't have to shell out another $50 or so for a new sound card! Since this problem is so widespread, I guess the only hope for people like me who have tried most everything with no results, is a patch from RockStar. If anyone has any other tips or advice, me and the others with no where else to go would appreciate it. Thanks.
Rage18
hmm. could be the fact that you have SB Live. How do other games do?
bigmike21
Yeah, I'm thinking that it is probably SB Live! at fault. It does not perform good on Half Life 2 either.
Rage18
you should look into an audigy. I have the 2 which does very well (atleast for me) but the 4 has been out for some time now. -EDIT- What about games other than half life 2. Half life 2 fails at sound all by itsself. I havent played it lately though, maybe the finally fixed it

DaLion
Delete the game config file : "My Documents" --> "GTA San Andreas User Files". its called 'gta_sa.set' Play the game, does that help ?
Studbeefpile
I also have an SB Live! soundcard, and get the same problem. But like you said, many people are having the same problem with different hardware. I never had any sound issues in Half Life 2 though. One thing I was wondering, do you have the url to the site where you get driver updates for SB Live!? I got this soundcard a few years ago, but the drivers I find on the net are older than what I got with the cd Does that mean they haven't done an update for a couple of years, or I'm looking in the wrong place
maf
SB Live! here, too. Turning sound acceleration in DirectX to 'Basic' fixed the sounds for me. I had the sound disappear once but it came back a minute later and it hasn't happened again in 40 hours of play so far.
bigmike21
Studbeefpile, Here's the URL to Creative Labs where you can download drivers and/or patches for Sound Blaster Cards. Hope it helps....no luck on my sound yet. Oh well! Creative Labs Drivers

MacoroniCheese
Yeah, I'm thinking that it is probably SB Live! at fault. It does not perform good on Half Life 2 either. I have an Audigy 1 and get the same exact error. Turning accel down the basic was only solution.
Harkon
95% of the world uses integrated audio, not $100/$200 audio cards that give no perceptive benefit. If a specific, costly add-in card is required to play a game something is wrong. PATCH ME!
