New Area above Shoreside Vale

The new area above shoreside vale starts with Cedar Ridge. The Official GTA3 site has a place listed as Cedar Ridge observatory, which is past the ovservatories on the docks of the Cochrane Dam. It is up past all the blocked off roads, and was probably cut from the game.

I dont know if this was noticed by anyone, but I'd say that's fairly strong proof of at least a minor amount of countryside in this game. Hopefully there is a lot of country side, Carcer City, and maybe a small town.

If I remember correctly, GTA3 only took about 700 mbs of the DVD it was burned on. With the 1.x(cant remember if it was 1.8 or something else) gb available on UMD, it's not out of the question that they could have added it all in.

What I'm concerned about is will there be loading times in between areas. If so, how long are they going to be? Luckily Rockstar has been learning all sorts of tricks with the PS2, which is how they kept San Andreas load time free save for the opening load. I hope they've had enough time with PSP(or if it's similar enough to PS2) to apply similar tricks to decrease or remove loading times.

Does anyone know how much RAM the PSP has in comparison to the PS2? I'd be intersted in learning what Rockstar has to deal with, and if the smaller screen and or lower graphic file size could help improve performance. I'm so fascinated by the abilities of the PSP, and am interested in learning how far we can expect it to go.

Thanks,

-Bobby

In OPS2 Australia they clame that Shorside Vale is increased and nearly 2 times as big. It curls up to be above Stanton Island on the map.

Right, which is why I created this topic. I'm saying the new area is called Cedar Ridge, or at least a part is. On the Offical GTA3 Website the area curving around above shoreside Vale appears to be country side. This topic is mostly about what we might expect the area to be, and there is a large clue left on the website map on GTA3.com if you click on man instead of mouse. Way up north of shoreside vale lies a small observatory called Cedar Ridge Observatory. That place was inaccessible in GTA3.

what i am thinking is that there going to open the tunnels in Shorside and that will take you to some new parts. and did anyone notice there are Telephone poles by the Observatory? And they might make ghost island a part of Shorside

Wasnt the resedential area around the observatory, Cedar Grove. I'd say they will open the tunnels and what they have their probably wont be opened till the end of the game, but hopefully swimming will be part, it has to be.

GTA3 = 700mb? Dont think so. I have HDAdvance for my ps2,which allows me to copy games onto the HDD. When i copied GTA3, it was 4 gigs.

Claude might have been able to swim, just not in Liberty City. In the Liberty Tree it said that Liberty City Harbor had a big oil spill. No lie go check it out.

I guess I had misread. I thought during comparison statements talking about the possibilities of GTA for PSP someone had said that GTA3 was only 700 mbs, but who knows. I guess I could check real fast... oh well.

[edit]

Yep, 4.32 gbs. That's what you get for trusting other people. Maybe with the smaller size needed for graphics. But that still leaves the question or RAM amount for PSP and PS2. I'll go look that up as well.

[edit]

psp:

2 mbs Video Memory

8mb edram

UMD: 1.8 gbs

1-333mhz processor

PS2:

4mb edram Graphics Memory

DVD-Rom 8gbs(GTA3 used 4.32)

300 mhz processor

32mb rdram

It's crazy that PSP would have any higher specs, let alone processing speed. As far as Ram goes, I dont really know much about how it works, but it seems like not having as large of graphic files, and not having to worry about how they'll stretch to different screens, that the PSP should run about on par with PS2.

Anyone know much about how this stuff works? Anyone with knowledge care to share some insight into what we can expect in terms of speed for GTA:LCS? Surely the reduced graphic sizes would help, as well as other factors.

Thanks.

Rockstar's magical, they can make files as big or as small as they wish O_O ..... im sure they'll get everything working just fine and dandy, im very excited about this game, and am even more excited to see how they will work it out on the sexy lil' psp biggrin.gif

Wha? How could GTA3 be 4.32 GBs? It was only like 1.5GBs on PC confused.gif

A PC uses directx compression, the ps2 does not. PC games are generally smaller because of this compression smile.gif

And the psp has 32mb of ram and 8mb video ram, with a 333mhz processor capable of 33 million polygons a sec.

LCS will be eye-candy biggrin.gif

Thanks for the extra info. I'm pretty psyched. They'll push the PSP to it's limits I'm sure.

Now as we all know Liberty City is gonna be set in 1998 and R* said they gonna be making LC bigger with more stuff like improving the construction site, Saint Mark's Casino, Expand Shoreside Vale, etc so I am Probably guessing that the Shoreside Vale is gonna have new land going through the tunnel by the dam(couldn't of been underconstruction the whole 3 years), and Saint Mark's Casino is gonna be located in the same building that is pratically underconstruction in Saint Mark's with that part of the road destroyed and building destroyed in Saint Marks, and there might be a real builing in the construction site area.

Yeah,I drove past that today and I thought "That's where the casino's gonna be".Thier are mafia cars behind it. sly.gif

Let's get something straight. GTA3 is set in 2001. There's a big construction site in Fort Staunton, a pair of blocked-up tunnels in Shoreside Vale and a destroyed building in St. Mark's. If Liberty City Stories is set in 1998, 3 years before GTA3, then both the construction site and the destroyed building would be just other constructions (maybe Tony Cipriani destroys them... sly.gif ) and the tunnels will be open (maybe they were under maintenance or something in GTA3).

Ah ha, I thought it was something like that. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess XBox must use DirectX compress too.

@tuff: Yes. I have umpteen memories of going to SSV to find that elusive, but fun, ice cream truck.

@da grove: No official release date yet. You would know if you read this LCS FAQ.

Sadly, the psp does have a 333MHZ processor, but its limited(i think to 222mhz or 233mhz). They limited it because if they ran it at 333mhz it eats up the battery. I know with the SNes emulator for psp you can move the speed up to 333mhz, but thats when they haxor it. Now will rockstar unleash the full potential of the system? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Yes, but we're talking about Cedar Ridge, the area where the observatory is supposed to be.

I know for sure that GTA3 is about 700mb, I have a friend who backs up all of his games, and his backup for GTA3 is on a CD-R, and yes it does work.

Is it topdown or 3D? & can someone finish cedar ridge for PC with a mod, to make it like it will be on LCS?

as with the Dreamcast, I believe PS2 games use dummy files to ensure that the game files are stored on the outer edge of disk, thereby increasnig the game size and reducing wear and tear on the lasers, which is why it's possible to make CDrips from DVD games without taking out video files or downsampling audio.. of course that would only be for backup purposes...

Uh. I dunno about the mod thing, but, in case you haven't noticed, LCS is definately 3D. We are way past the 'Top Down' stage.

And, I like your sig. But mine's better. (And my avatar is better than that.) tounge.gif

So what things do you reckon we'll see in the new part of shoreside vale?

We'll probably have:

  • Ghost Town - from GTA3 intro movie - will include the Liberty city bank
  • Liberty State Penitentiary - Intro Movie - Claude & 8-ball were 'en route' to the L.S.P.
  • Darkel's place - Darkel was a terrorist from GTA3 who was removed from the game due to the events of 9/11

Any more?

Ghost Town - I think if they put this in it will be for the fans and people on forums who want all loose ends tied up. I don't believe it was ever really intended to be in Shoreside.

The were en route to the penitentiary heading over the bridge towards Portland. Maybe they were taking a non-direct route to avoid ambushes - Doh!

I wonder where they were coming from. i love the idea of having a prison though.

Darkel - maybe. Would he have had a place or did he live on the streets? Maybe he's got a huge factory out there.

What is the New York equivelent of the existing part of Shoreside Vale? What would i see there? it's listed as the suburban, residential area so I imagine a lot more large houses, maybe a couple of small towns. I doubt it very much but I'd like a drive-on ferry that runs to Portland. If they did expand on the ghost town idea they would have to add a lot of streets and buildings.

Maybe it's just big open fields that happen to be occupied by a circus during the game.

right lets get this straight, the icecream truck spawns absolutely everywhere, but because it was sooo rare no one hardly saw it, i dont know why many people saw it on shore side vale, if you get in a car, the car you are in is everywhere......its just the game engine, i got in a mr whoopee and was in portland outside the hospital and geuss what i see.......another mr whoopee........and ive seen it everywhere pratically, by the way i think this is goin to be a real revolution ( as if gta3 wasnt anyway) but anyways.......that tunnel on shore side was suposedly to carcer city....the setting of errr manhunt i think but i dont play it, ok the bell rang for skool gotta go

WHO GIVES A CRAP ABOUT THE FRIKKIN ICE CREAM TRUCKS?!

i doubt they would put Carcer into LCS but they would probably continue the two main roads through the new city and into some more hills, or left unfinshed or something.

I really wouldn't be surprised it R* removed those blockades from the tunnel, so everyone was like 'OMG! The tunnel is open! Let's go explore!' but there was some more blockades futher down the tunnel. I could see R* doing that, just to mess with people.
