cepper
Since everyone has been so helpful here, I thought I'd share my success story. Those of you with AMD boards might want to read... At first, I was getting into the game just fine but I would experience random "hard" crashes when entering vehicles. No blue-screen, just a frozen screen, a second of sound looping, and me pushing restart manually. After trying just about every suggestion here with regard to lowering settings, getting new sound drivers, sound acceleration off, etc. (nothing had any effect), I noticed my motherboard's drivers had never been updated. (Windows update never suggested anything for motherboards). I have an AMD XP Athlon chip. I updated to the highest AMD driver version (5.33) but when I rebooted and tried the game again, the game wouldn't play at all. It would get to the "loading" screen, but then when it should fade-in to the game, I got nothing but a blank screen and a "hard" lockup. I then went back to the AMD page and tried the "AMD DRIVER PACK" which was higher on the page even though it was an older driver (5.22). Upon starting the game this time, I was again able to load and play for a while longer before a random vehicle-entering crash. Ugh. I found one last suggestion here which was to try Windows Compatibility Mode '98 on the shortcut. I'm happy to say, that since I tried this, I have not had a single crash in 3 days (many many hours in that time too)!! Not only that, but I am getting good framerates (considering my PC). I average in the low to mid 30's with Mipmapping on, Antialias x2, draw distance at half, FX quality low (that's the only one that had serious negative effects), and resolution at 1024x768x32. And that's on my older Athlon XP 2000, Nvidea TI 4400, with 512 ram. Long story short, check your motherboard drivers and try the Windows Compatibility mode if you are still having crashes! I hope this helps someone. Best of luck everyone!

Rage18
by 'motherboard drivers' Do you mean the amd processor driver or the chipset drivers. If you are referring to the chipset drivers needed the update you will first need to tell us what chipset you have or just tell us what board you have.
