Freeze Car Viewpoint? New way SUX - Help

FAAmecanic

Hey all

Is there a way to KEEP the viewpoint behind your vehicle (and for that matter while on foot) BEHIND you? Am I missing something here. I cant stand the way it moves around you all on its own.

Everytime I try to take tight corners (like I used to do in GTA III and VC) by using the Handbrake while turning...the damn viewpoint moves to the side (like 2 ft from my door) or front of my car!! angry.gif Not good when your either in pursuit or being persued and your trying to take tight corners and manuve between obstacales!!

If I remember right.... the viewpoint in GTA III and GTA VC used to be locked behind your car/or tommy....... This is totally ruining the game for me (read:pi$$ing me off!). Well the viewpoint thing AND the "Lockups when entering/leaving buildings, and sometimes when entering a car" thing.

THANKS!

Yes i agree, the new way is useless, i thought it might change slowly back to the old way as your driving skill goes up but apparently it dont

I can live with it i suppose as you only have to move the camera about with mouse to be able to drive properly.... the freeze ups on the other hand ................................................ die.gifdie.gifdie.gifdie.gifdie.gifdie.gifdie.gifdie.gifdie.gifdie.gifrahkstar2.gif

It would be my favourite game, if the f*cker worked properly !!!

At first i was annoyed by the camera as well... but i got used to it. It's still a PINTA when it comes to flying helicopters though. You can't make quick turns without losing sight of what's in front of you.

It should be possible to keep the free look mode while still having the camera behavior from Vice City when you are not using it. What also sucks is the fact, that the preset camera angle is too low for some of the cars. You can't see what's in front of it unless you constantly alter the angle with the mouse.

One thing that massivly helps though (ie. makes it playable again) is turning on mouse steering... just don't touch the mouse when you're driving and it stays far more faithfully behind the car...

I was actually gonna stop playing the game until that was properly fixed, but the mouse steering thing let me carry on smile.gif

That is a good tip madtommy, I just tried it and it does help a lot smile.gif not as good as VC steering but MILES better

I also think the camera angle is a bit too low, especially when going over the top of a hill or bridge.

I'll have to give that a go as well because I totally agree. The way that the angle is too low and switches back to low again if you raise it up is really ruining the driving experience.

It's okay if you are in a van or on a bike (slow), but when you are hooning it along a narrow street, just about to shoot a narrow gap and suddenly find yourself driving from down behind the rear bumper it's a nightmare!!! angry.gif

Thanks for the tip!

Since I'm young (12) it seems I'm the only one who likes new features. Is it because most of the forum mebers are mature and usually mature people don't like alot of changes that affect pretty much what you're used to? The new camera sys. gives more freedom imo. And the aim sys. gives a touch of realism to the game also.

I dont think its age.... its just we have played GTA since at least GTA III.

I agree on the aiming system. Once you get used to it, it is actually more functional than the old way.

As far as driving, if they would make so your camera angle can be moved by YOU and not at random...I would like it too.

Try this.... go real fast and try and take a corner using your handbrake (space bar I think) to slide around it. In all the other GTA's I could do this and maintain control of the car. But with the new camera system when I slide around a corner the stupid camera goes from behind me to about 2 ft from the drivers door!! Then you have to let off the acclerator and adjust the camera view or else you smack into a wall, car, people (or miss hitting people if thats how you play devil.gif )... and loose a precious 2 seconds reaiming your view. Not good if you got people on your butt trying to run you down (ie cops, gang members).

hehe, yes, 12 is young... But I'm only 30! Give me a break here!! sad.gif

I think it's just what you are used to. Did you play GTA3 and GTA:Vice City too? If so, you must be able to notice the difference...

There's no getting away from it - Young or 'old', to have the camera end up next to your driver's side door when you are screaming round a corner trying to get away from the cops does nobody any favours cool.gif

Cheers

1 if the camera apears too low (from DEFAULT controls, as I use default controls) press up on arrow keys. Will raise the camera. Too high? Down.

2 To get the camera behind your car from virtually any coordinates in-game, tap q+e for a qick look behind. When you let go of q+e you will have a reset camera view...

Looks like the vehicle camera positions/offsets is hard-coded into the ..\data\script\main.scm file:

6c00eh & 9a9a5h: FIXED_CAMERA_POSITION - OFFSET FROM CAR =

6c12ch & 9aac9h: CAMERA_POINT_AT - OFFSET FROM CAR =

...but I wouldn't know which hex value to change to affect these settings.

now that is helpful!

time for me to backup and try fiddling with the main.scm by the look of it... if i get it right, i'll stick the file somewhere people can get at it...

come to that, someone else must have tried this already, surely? anyone know of a modified main.scm anywhere that already amends the camera angle?

The mission script doesn't control things like the default camera view. There are opcodes to fix the camera in a postition, but they're only applied during cutscenes and the like.

The camera lock is hard-coded, but into the EXE.

But honestly, how can you people have not realised if you don't touch the mouse, the camera doesn't move? Seriously, lose the ADD that causes you to throw your mouse around the desk and drive around without touching the mouse.

Thats what we were saying dood! Use the Mouse Steering (but dont touch the mouse) and it gives you almost 90% of the view you had in VC...

We were trying to drive with Mouse Steering OFF, which causes the camera to rotate at the will of the GTA gods as to what you see.

I have mouse steering off and when I don't touch my mouse, the camera is LOCKED behind the vehicle. Only time it doesn't is when slowly accelerating or reversing, like it did in GTA3 and VC.

Why don't you guys just learn to drive the way you're supposed to drive in SA? Left hand on ASDW-controls and right hand on the mouse at all times. It takes a bit of practice to drive straight while controlling the viewpoint, but once you get it under control you'll see the trouble was worth it. That way you can avoid collisions at the intersections as you can have a quick look around before zooming past the intersection.

I've actually gone a step further and rigged TrackIR to work with SA, allowing me to control the viewpoint by moving my head.

<rant>ok then mister 'why don't you just drive like sa wants you to'.... how do you wheelie? just take your hand off the mouse, sling it over to the numpad and then change back again? how about drive by's? how do you actually LOOK out of the window with your gun out while your right hand is over on the mouse? and hows about free choice? fair enough you like to be able to face the way you've been rather than where you're going (come to that i think i saw you on the m25 this morning), but i prefer the slightly more helpful default view of facing WHERE I'M GOING!... like in real life... you know, when i turn a corner in my car i keep my head facing mostly FORWARDS rather than leaving my head facing the way i was going before i turned...</rant>

I have analog CH Pro Pedals controlling wheelies (it's quite intuitive, actually). I know it proves to be a problem for people with no pedals, but then again, is there really a reason to do a wheelie while controlling the viewpoint?

I don't quite get the drive-by-part. I use Q and E to look to the direction I want to shoot at. Is there another way to do a drive by?`

I mostly keep the view centered as well to the direction I'm going, and it's easy as hell with your hand on the mouse (after a bit of practicing).

If you have a mouse with back and forward buttons you can set those to wheelie up/down and that solves the wheelie problem. As Opius said if you don't touch the mouse the camer doens't move so get your left hand on WASD and your right hand on the mouse.

Sorry but that just doesn't work at all for me.

Mouse steering off and walking around town results in CJ running into things unless I use the mouse to change the camera. Same for driving. The camera stays locked relative to the compass rather than relative to the car - i.e. if it is facing North then the cam,era continues to stare North even if the car is driving south.

Have you made any changes at all to your setup that gives you the same controls as GTA:VC and which people here clearly would like to have back?

all of a sudden i see that i have lost sight of the wood for all the trees...

i like mouse look... i do... i really do! andi miss that i can't mouse look anymore because i have turned on steer with mouse, and now i know exactly what bugs me about the camera... sa is simulating me going round a corner and staring lazily out of my side window cos that was the direction i was travelling a min ago...

when im driving i don't keep my head facing in the direction it was going after i turn... without me ever consciously thinking about it, it always looks where i'm going... its a safety thing smile.gif and that is what i want in sa...i want a natural feeling to turning...

when i first played gta 3 and gta vc it felt sooo natural to drive... it was easy but you could still mouse look if you wanted to... the only difference is that the camera tracked quicker (and a little bit higher)... when i first booted into sa i couldn't drive... it felt wrong... simple as that. the first few corners i took on my lovely little bike found me smashing straight into walls and cars and more walls all because the camera simply hadn't taken into account the fact i had changed my heading... i don't like driving with a hand on the mouse to change the view the whole time so i had to turn on mouse steering and now i can't mouse look even when i want to...

the only thing needed is quicker and slightly higher tracking on the camera - nothing else... don't get me wrong, its not a game breaker once you have steer with mouse on, but before i found that setting, i was gonna stop playing until this flaw was fixed...

anyway, i'm glad some of you like the new lazy cam... i too want to be able to mouse look again, i just don't want to force cj's head forward after every single turn i make...

i'll shut up now... suicidal.gif

When on foot you should always have you hand on the mouse to direct his movement. As for in a vehicle I dunno as for me if you leave the mouse it doesn't do what you explain and my setup is mostly default.

That's simply not true imho. The mouse is a look around, turns are pretty sick when you look at a forty five degree angle into them, and the view auto corrects. a lot of times, like in missions, I just drive. It doesn't have a floating point cam to me, it's pretty tight actually, but I like running my hand across the mouse pad when I'm just free riding because of the added visual interactivity and it seems more random, like, every turn is different every time you whip around the corner. And you don't hit on coming traffic if you look before you leap, cars just seem to not spawn on that side of the road when you're looking, but they are there nine times out of ten when you just bail around a corner.

Why don't you guys just learn to drive the way you're supposed to drive in SA?

Because I am playing this game, not the game developers?

Because this is a PC game that lets me choose which buttons I want for controls, not some gaming console with locked in controls?

Because I shouldn't have to learn a much more complicated way to do something that is done much simpler in previous games in the same series?

Because I need to concentrate on driving, or driving and shooting, not concentrating on telling the camera to do something it should do on its own?

Because it makes no friggin sense for the camera to be looking in one direction when I'm driving in another?

It sucks that I have to do without the ability to look around with the mouse in order to make the camera *almost* work right. I liked having that ability, but using it makes driving impossible.

The main problem I have with the camera is the resetting. I want the cam to stay where I PUT it and not auto-reset after a couple seconds if I don't touch the mouse. A way to disable the camera auto-reset is what's needed.

w, s, a, d for moving arrows left/right to look left/right arrows up/down to do wheelies

gun1 = numpad0, gun2 = RightControl or numpad1. Honk = LeftShift, EnterAndExit = LeftControl. Submission = Tab

Microsoft Intellimouse optical with 4 buttons = unused when driwing/flying. Like only to walk with mouse in my hand...

That is a fact that the camera is too low. Behind camera should be at same level as in VC. And when you get out of the car camera stangely swings from side to side. But still I think these are just minor things. All I do is drink lots of alcohol and play!

My settings are simular. I personally like it more than it was in GTA3/VC.

WASD for movement, Q and E for drive by's, R and F for leaning forward and backward. My hand brake is spacebar and my normal brake is S AND my right mouse button. I have a Logitech MX500 (4 button mouse + scroll wheel) so its easy to rotate the camera while turning. Mouse steering = off.
