dk`
Hi people, how can I increase my driving skill? I drive lots of kms every day but nothing happen.. I tried fireman and pimp missions and the skill growed a little, but is there a way to improve the skill without doing sub-missions ? thanks a lot ps. "Search" button doesn't work Edited June 19, 2005 by dk`
Zach
Yes, one's driving skill seems to increase at a dramatically reduced rate compared to the other vehicle skills. I maximized my cycle and biking skills almost instantly (comparatively speaking) in LS early in the game. I've been driving exclusively cars since well before I left LS, and now I'm nearly finished with the game, and my driving skill is still only at 73%. Anyway, the only way to increase it is to 1.) keep driving... A LOT, and 2.) complete the driving school. About the driving school, I got gold (eventually) in all tests but one, but as I stated above, I'm still only at 73%, so don't count on it to boost you to perfection. srg
If you don't want to really go far distances just to boost your driving skills, one thing that'd help too is to enter the stadium races repeatedly. That'd also help you practice your racing skills that might help in the other races that you'll have to join later on in the game.
dk`
thanks guys, srg: If I have a low skill in driving i CAN'T enter the stadium race.. When I had to boost biking skill I jumped through the airport gate (although is a restricted area) and I've ridden 3-4 times the landing track landing some tricks like 360 or 180 or one wheel. In this way I had 100% bike in almost 5 minutes.. It could be great If there's a way to enter the stadium race "illegally" and do the same thing by car
pixelrage
you only need a really tiny amount of driving skill to enter the stadium. I have like 1/16th skill and I got in.
maf
I think maybe doing a lot of turns left and right helps, at least it seems that way to me.
Big_H.001
Does it have anything to do with not hitting things while driving? My skill has been increased twice (I'm still in the first city and drove mostly bikes in the beginning) and it seemed to happen after a while of me driving without hitting other cars or poles or people etc. Maybe it was just building up and just happened to increase then... I'm not sure. How much skill do you need to enter the racing tracks? -H
Zach
I was looking through the game's data files last night, and I discovered the reason one's driving skill increases so slowly. I won't waste bandwidth explaining the obvious. Just open up the ar_stats.dat file in your favorite text editor and see for yourself.

I won't waste bandwidth explaining the obvious. Just open up the ar_stats.dat file in your favorite text editor and see for yourself. Do you mean the line about the time limit being set to 300? Some of the other ones are at 300 too, I don't see why they would go any quicker than the driving stat (they seem to go quicker to me, but maybe they actually don't). And I've figured out that it has nothing to do with hitting things. I just went up another level and I had just plowed through a crowded sidewalk (after bouncing off another car). So at least there's that.
TheGuy20
It means for every 5 mins of driving, your driving skill will increase by 20. So if you changed the 300 to a 1, you'd get a skill increase every second of driving.
Zach
Do you mean the line about the time limit being set to 300? Well, that, yes, and also the STAT_INC_DRIVING_SKILL setting. For driving, it only increases 20 points as compared to 50 points for the others, hence why the other skills increase so much faster. (And yes, the motorcycle skill is only set to 25, but it's time is set to 180 as opposed to 300.) So doing a little simple math, here's how it breaks down: Bicycle = 0.41667 points/secondMotorcycle = 0.13889 points/secondDriving = 0.06667 points/secondBoat = 0.16667 points/secondFlying = 0.16667 points/second So rounding, it takes twice as long to maximize your driving skill as it does your motorcycle skill. Big_H.001
Maybe they expect you to be driving cars twice as much as the other things, so that's why they made it like that. Hm, either way it looks like I'll have to get out there are drive some more
maf
Well there certainly is a lot more driving since I finished the Los Santos missions and got dumped out in the countryside
mikeswi
I'd imagine driving around the beltway surrounding Las Venturas over and over and over between missions would help a little. Of course you can't do that until you're halfway through the game. Maybe try the freeway surrounding Los Santos early in the game will help, although it's hard not to get hit by other traffic on that one. What is the purpose of driving skill other than unlocking races? Does it make cars handle better or something?

Basically it means better traction, which is a must for some of the races and getaways later in the game. Thanks -shaDow
maf
I definitely notice a difference in handling as the skills increase; slight but noticeable.

I could have sworn the Greenwood was looser my 2nd and 3rd times through the game when I'd just started. Ok, so from now, I'll start the game by driving around the freeway as much as possible until it goes up some.
Knightmare
Yep, not to mention some cars just don't have good traction to start with...so when you just start out it's even worse! Plus I hate steering on a keyboard, I'm such a horrible driver haha Thanks -shaDow

Those things are hard to control at the beginning or end of the game. I think their tires are made of teflon.
maximdymok
actually i almost always have a voodoo in my garage-the best handling car ive ever seen yet. And its actuaslly pretty fast. savanna freaks me out though- i made one explode because of crashes while driving from lowrider tune garage to lowrider meeting in mission Cesar Vialpando. lil weasel
I never cared for the low-riders hydrolics. It says you can lock them but they lock High and as you may have noted it's lousy to corner. And impossible to race, with my skills.
