I only recently got into Pink Floyd. The past year or so. And...you kind of need all the albums.
Wolf68k
The Wall soundtrack, and to go with that the movie on DVD. Momentary Lapes of Reason...Learning To Fly is one of my favorites.

Lazzo
Animals, The Wall, Meddle, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Atom Heart Mother, and yeah, Wish you Were Here. Do it. Name about every album why don't you? I would probably go with Relics too...but the first album you should purchase is the Dark Side of the Moon then go with Wish You Were Here. After that I would go with Piper At the Gates of Dawn but keep in mind its Barrett's writing and singing so its a bit different. After that I would jump back and get Meddle and Atom Heart Mother. From there I would just buy whatever. "romance at short notice was her speciality."
SaltonSea123
I too just started listening to them this past year at the University of Oregon. The students there are really into Pink Floyd and Bob Marley, etc... anything "earthy". Anyhow, the band really pushes the creative envelope of music. Wolf68k
Since Lazzo asked for a complete list....ok here ya go * The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967) * A Saucerful Of Secrets (1968) * More (1969) * Ummagumma (1969) - How can you go wrong when this album includes a track called "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict" this is not a joke, I've heard the track myself years ago. And you can't forget "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" * Atom Heart Mother (1970) * Relics (1971) * Meddle (1971) * Obscured By Clouds (1972) * The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) * Wish You Were Here (1975) * Animals (1977) * The Wall (1979) * A Collection of Great Dance Songs (1981) - "Best Of" * Works (1983) * The Final Cut (1983) * A Momentary Lapse Of Reason (1987) * Delicate Sound Of Thunder (1988) - Live * The Division Bell (1994) * P*U*L*S*E (1995) - Live * Echoes (2001) - yet another "Best Of" * Shine On (2001) - Box Set Sources: htpp://www.amazon.com and http://ipaki.com/content/html/113/806.html
PhyschoPotato
You HAVE to get Animals. It shows all aspects of the band at their very best. I've always loved Obscured by Clouds, too.. An album that I very rarely see mentioned. Give Echoes, Embryo (not the studio version, the version they played live) and Careful With That Axe, Eugene a listen and if you like them then you will likely enjoy some of their earlier albums like A Saucerful of Secrets and Meddle. wish you were here. Lazzo
I've always loved Obscured by Clouds, too.. An album that I very rarely see mentioned. I've seen it for sale a few times but in most cases it isn't on the shelf. Another reason could be that it's a soundtrack. "romance at short notice was her speciality." JulioCaesar
Wish you were here is like, a mandatory must buy for anyone who even associates themselves as being a pink floyd listener, the same goes for dark side of the moon. Last year me and my friends were all into buying retro CD's, i.e. Led Zeplin 3, physical graffiti, the doors, and of course pink floyd. But up until rescently, me and my best friend came to realise that pink floyd is really overrated. It is by far one of the best bands of all time, yet I see so many people following everyone else by saying things like "dark side of the moon is my favorite album of all time" and sh*t like that just to look cool, and unfortunately they're small minded friends will probably think he/she is cool, becuase so many of these people have the tendency to just nod and agree away without ever being an individual and disagreeing. I'm not saying you should ditch pink floyd all together, you should still go on to finding some good pink floyd cd's, but don't be one of those typical scene follower's that go on to say that pink floyd is the greatest f*cking thing ever. Sorry if it seems like I'm trying to lecture everyone here..
Lazzo
Do you mean that Dark Side of the Moon is overrated? Along with The Wall, I will agree with you. Wish You Were Here, Animals, Meddle, Ummagumma and just about every other Pink Floyd album (including The Division Bell) are most definately comparable to DSOTM and The Wall. Like you said though, Pink Floyd is almost becoming a trend...they (i.e. trend whores) really don't appreciate the band until they listen to their different albums and experience the diversity in lyrics and just the music itself. Hard Margin
You need to get Animals, even if it's only for Dogs, which is the best Foyd song.
Wolf68k
Then take it from an old fart like me (33yrs). I was listening to Floyd long before it was a "trend". I'm not saying Floyd is my favorite band of all time, Zeppelin is closer to that for me, but they are a great band. If you want to listen to something while you're just kicking back relaxing, without having to act any certain way (not exactly what I wanted to say but I can't think of how I wanted to say it), without thinking about what any of it means, to just zone out, Floyd, Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Doors, and many others from the same era and genre can certainly do that. Yes all of thier songs have a meaning of some kind, but when you're trying to relax who gives a flying f*** what it is. Lots of other artist and most of their songs keep me thinking "what does this song mean" or I can't think about nothing but what the song does mean since I know already. To think anyone thinks buying Floyd CDs are trendy sickens me. Then again the thought of someone saying they are buying "retro CDs" like Floyd and Zeppelin doesn't make me feel much better, no offense, but atleast calling it retro is a simple fact of life that an old fart like me needs to come to terms with...just like that fact that bands from the '80s would now have to be grouped as classic rock, or even new one called 'classic heavy metal' and so on. Now can someone please get me my walker, and get my teeth back from the cat that little b*tch. [psst mods here's a smiley to add to the list, if at all possible] Edited June 21, 2005 by wolf68k
JulioCaesar
Well, thats why I pointed out in my last post that now I'm really trying to find really good bands coming out right now, because when I was into the whole "retro" phase, I felt like I was denying everything being put out at the present without once ever searching for any good bands. New music might not sound anything like floyd or zeplin or doors, but in my oppinion thats a good thing. I find myself relating way more to music being released today than old music for 30 years ago, which is a good thing.
gta_king
Ok good albums to get The Wall Animals Wish You Were Here Division Bell I'd also advise getting Momentary Lapse and Final Cut. Well now i've mentioned most of their albums, also get Meddle and Obscured by Clouds. Final Cut is one that takes a while to grow on you, it certainly did for me. The track "Not Now John" is great, along with "Fletcher Memorial Home" Also try to get hold of "Is There Anybody Out There: The Wall live" The Pulse DVD is out at this year (Apparantly) so that'd be a good purchase. The thing with Floyd is each album is different from each other which is why you really have to recomend all their albums. * Ummagumma (1969) - How can you go wrong when this album includes a track called "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict" this is not a joke, I've heard the track myself years ago. There are no words to describe the track, just a facial expression. Its essentially just a collection of sounds played on top of each other. Ummagumma is probably their worst album in my opinion, i'm not a fan of it at all, then again i'm not really into anything Pre Meddle/Obscured By Clouds The early Syd Barret stuff can be alright but i'm not a big fan of it. Although "Bike" is hilarious. Edited June 21, 2005 by gta_king

Infact I'm impressed by it. Infact more younger people like yourself should because these are the bands the influence the bands of today. Personally I have a hard time relating to bands of today, but then like I've stated so many times here I'm an old fart.
GTA WAR
try the sound track album MORE. It is full of real gems. The Nile " is a early metal song. Cymbaline" great melodic tune. Has some jazz and country type music on it as well. "I was standing by the Nile , when I saw the lady smile. I would take her out for a while, For a while." Nothing wrong with being an old fart I do get pissed when kids say they love bands like Pink Floyd/various other bands, and then they say they like Green Day. There's quite a difference.
