ftran999
I know that VC is modelled after Miami in the 80s and SA is modelled after the state of CA in the 90s, but what about Liberty City in GTA3? Is it modelled after a real U.S. city or is it completely fictionalized?

Nate Baker1
New York City Yes and this is a proven fact. In the commercials and old screenshots they used light blue and white cars like in new york but took them out after septembers disaster.

Never knew that I just looked at the places like central park.
MOBMAN
I've heard that it is a combo of NYC,Detroit and Chicago.I'm thinking, Portland=Chicago Staunton=New York Shoreside Vale=Detriot
GTA_kev
I thought Shoreside Vale was modelled after Long Island.
Cuse510
I had heard that it was modeled partly after Chicago, but after playing it, I'm not sure. The only thing I can think of right now are the "El" tracks, and those look more high tec. The real El is old school. I know because I live here. I guess part of Portland kind of "feels" like Chicago, but it probably feels like New York too to a native New Yorker. It's a pity R* didn't make it more like Chicago. That would have been sweet. Hopefully in GTA4 they'll have a Chicago-like city (because I'm assuming they'll have multiple cities.) I kind of doubt it though
NoProblemToKillYou
Liberty City is modelled after New York City. Portland=Queens, Staunton Island=Manhattan, Shoreside Vale=New Jersey. I am not sure, but I suspect that the building site in Staunton is modelled after ground Zero, but there are a lot of people who doupt that because the game was released only one or two months after the attacks. You never know...
Jasonlives
Liberty City is based off of New York City, but it includes elements of Chicago in it. The original police cars are a dead knockoff of the NYPD cars, yet they were changed to the black-and-white cars because Rockstar felt nobody would want to trash NYPD-like police cars after 9/11. And, the building site in Staunton is not based on the WTC site. For one, the WTC was in the southern part of New York, and if Liberty City is based off of NYC, then they would have put it down there. Plus, the financial district of Liberty City is in southern Staunton Island, so if a WTC-replica existed in this game, it would be there.

Is it modelled after a real U.S. city or is it completely fictionalized? How old are you, man? I'm sorry, but I'm just really surprised that someone would not know Liberty City is based off of New York City! If you knew Vice was based off Miami, and San Andreas actually each city is based of a real city... Los Santos = Los Angeles, San Fierro = San Francisco, and Las Venturas = Las Vegas. But Liberty City totally has that New York feeling. Well, I'm glad you know now man. But I just don't know how it took you this long to figure it out. :s
PILMAN
I was born in Chicago and I don't think portland looks anything like Chicago >;/. Although I guess it slightly resembles it but Chicago doesn't have a transit system like that. While they have subways they don't have any railways up in the air completely like that (or that I remember). I moved from chicago like 3 years ago to florida. PresidentKiller
The only thing that is not in Liberty City is "Miss Liberty", but there's a mod to add it.
