I dunno why I didn't notice this before but I have this black roads thing which I think is the same thing. basially anything on the ground in the distance is black until you get right up close. I turned mipmaps off in the game and they were gone but at a slight frame rate hit. So that fixed it for me.

A few spots I've noticed in San Fierro, like the tram lines, are black until I get really close to them; black squares that turn into slightly blurry textures.

Damn I just switched mip mapping back on and the difference is like night and day, not only is the framerate considerably faster, the draw distance seems to have been improved with less black roads. What the hell was I thinking ?

Are you sure that disabling mip mapping makes the game run slower?

Well kinda, it felt like it anyway which given the nature of what it does didn't surprise me. Like the black effect means that textures don't need to be drawn in the distance thus more performance. That's how I understand it anyway.

I have a Geforce FX 5600. I updated to the 77.72 drivers today and it doesn't alone fix the black roads. Using NV Hardpage and the Mipmap disabled didn't work for me. I had to get Rivatuner and make the LOD bias -3. I'm not real sure what that does, or if I even need to make it -3. This fixes my black road problem almost completely. The ONLY time I could see something was in the subway racing a Sanchez down the train track. But for me, it's 100% gone.

Edit: Does anyone know what the LOD Bias setting does?

Rivatuner's LOD bias -3 worked for me; no more black roads. But the framerate hit is slightly too much for my hardware I think, so I'm going back to the default setting. Thanks for the info though smile.gif

EDIT: I tried the LOD -3 setting again after seeing the difference it made - no noticeable black roads at all - and decided to keep it at that for now. The game looks better biggrin.gif

Same here. The utility worked, and eliminated the black roads completely, but I swear SA feels a little more sluggish now. I can't decide whether to keep it and live with the performance or go back to what it was, because it didn't bother me that much.

I don't know, I thought the game felt slightly sluggish after the LOD tweak, but I'm not so sure now. I've been playing a few hours with it on and can't say it has made any difference to the game speed/fps.

The black roads didn't bother that much anyway if I did have to go back to the default settings. But for the moment I'm happy with the LOD -3 setting and no black roads.

Finally, i managed to find a way to fix. Its quite simple - all you need is small tool called nVHardPage - you can download it here. Run it, choose Direct3D, find "User MipMap" and disable it. It works!

Okay, so I downloaded it, and it said to extract from a little box...It's "7-Zip self-extracting archieve" So Where do I extract it? It has a "pre-made" link that says "C:\Documents and Settings\Richel\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\H9ATL4N6\"

I tried extracting to there, but after extracting, nothing else comes out. COld someone please explain how to work this program/installation in one post?

Thanks a lot,

Try searching google for 7-zip. Type into google. And then search.

About the black roads. Here's what they say about that: (Rockstar admits its an issues, but doesn't fix it, just suggest how to reduce it):

From the 1.01 FAQ:

Q: Roads in the mid distance have a very noticeable black shadowed look that clears up as I get closer.

A: Try making sure you are not forcing Bi-Linear or Tri-Linear filtering to ON in your video drivers. Set MipMapping in GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas Display Options to OFF. Use Anistropic Filtering for the best look in game (you will need to force this ON in your video drivers control panel). Increasing the screen resolution will also push this distance further out.

How come R* didn't fix this before the game came out. Maybe they will fix it sometime, but I kinda doubt it.

i dont think rockstar can fix it.. since its not their engine. i read somewhere its a Renderware engine, which might be a problem for them tryin to fix it. Anyhow.. i got a 6800GT OC flavor from BFG Tech and i still get the black road problem from time to time. Disabling mip mapping on the advanced menu does help an assload but does hinder performance somewhat. not noticable enough to justify turning it back on though. i always run the latest drivers (even beta sometimes) and id have to say its probably the best idea to do so (especially with nvidia based cards, dunno about ATI, never purchased nor even played on one for an extended amount of time)

Does the LOD -3 make the graphicks choppy like turning mipmap off? Ar just makes the blurring more far away? And what's the Fps hit?

I haven't noticed any difference in frame rate since reducing the LOD setting to -3 using RivaTuner. The black roads are gone so this fix does work, despite what Rockstar are saying.

I'm playing with a GeForce FX 5200 128MB card, 2.4GHz P4 CPU, 512MB.

good 1 guys, haven't tried that one but forcing mip map filter in ati tray tools does it for me

That doesn't work for me sad.gif

I check this option, click apply, when I open tweaks dialog again it is unchecked.

I use ati tray tools 1.0.4.780. My vc is ati radeon 9600 pro 128MB.

I've been using RivaTuner for a couple of years to fix the black road problem in my GTASA game. (I'm using v2.02 RivaTuner at the moment; the latest one, I think.)

On the Main tab, I go to Driver settings-Customize... DirectDraw and Direct3D settings; then under Mipmapping slide the Mipmap LOD bias adjustment to -3.0 and hit OK.
