memento27oasis
Hey there, I have about 80 bucks to blow on a wireless router, and have the current setup: Desktop is connected to comcast cable internet with a cable modem Laptop is approx. 60ft. away behind three walls. I realize wireless g is the way to go, but many manufacturers offer "speedbooster" technology and all this other stuff that I don't understand. and it seems they all have "mail-in-rebates" which suck, but it's better than nothing. so what wireless router do you recommend? Taxmod
Netgear is the way to go! -TaxMod©
Bond996
I HIGHLY reccomend the Linksys WRT54g. It will probably cost you more then something from Netgear or D-Link, but the quality is worth it. My friend's D-Link router blew up randomly, quite literally, it start smoking after a month of operation. And my Netgear router couldn't get a signal from more then 5 ft away most of the time, and was unreliably disconnecting all of them. My WRT54g works EXCELLENTLY now for the wireless signals I have running into it, one from my Linux Box, one from my laptop, one from my dad's laptop, and one from my mom's work computer, as well as with the few I still have wired in. millermagic
I'd stay away from linksys. I've heard alot of good from friends about netgear.

Waste
There is a lot of fanboyism on routers and what-not. Personally have been using Linksys for years and have had less problems out of them than any other. Most people that whine about not getting signal aren't setting things up right or are too far from thier router to get a good signal.
Bond996
taxmod - Do you have wireless phones running in the 2.4ghz frequency? Do you own a microwave? Do you own wires and actively use them in your house? All of those factors can contribute to signal dropping. I still highly reccomend a Linksys router. They are owned by Cisco, who is the grand-daddy and absolute supreme ruler when it comes to networking products. Also, all of their drivers and firmware are mostly open-sourced for the community to improve upon as they like. I've never had a problem with them, between the one WRT54g I set up for myself, or the 6 I've set up or others I've reccomended for friends. Heres a topic where a few other people liked Linksys btw.
