Insurance is cheap if you know where to look. I paid £598 fully comp, all mods declared on a 300bhp Audi S4 at 21, with 3 years NCB, no fines, no criminal convictions.

Thats quite true stretch but at the moment im at a construction college/ joinery apprnticeship so money isnt very good so even if i did have a car i couldnt do any modifications to enhance the speed of the car, TL;DR being 17 is crap.

I'm going to post pictures of my ca tomorrow. I would take some now but it's dark out. I got a 1996 Chrysler New Yorker. It's white but I want to get it painted black.

Also yes Saabs last a LONG time. My dad had one for about two years. A 5 gear manual. Nice little car, good on gas, but no rear passenger room.

Here's mine - A 1996 BMW 318i in the rain.

I have always liked the look of the later 90's 3 series, im considering getting insured on one when im nearly 20. What are they like for speed, MPG, repairs/reliability? I know speed and MPG shouldnt be in the same sentance cause its kinda hard to get both at the same time 9 times out of 10 depending how fast/how far you want to go. I just think that if i need to go for a long distance trip if im working in another town or city and need to travel there myself i dont want to be getting sh*t MPG, but if im just driving for the pleasure and fancy putting my foot down and not worrying about how far my gas takes me will i be able to hit good speeds at stock.

I personally love my car. I'm 22 and I've had it for not quite 2 years. I'm only insured 3rd party but its pretty cheap.

The 1.8l engine is really good - not the fastest but great for cruising and mpg if u drive it carefully. It'll probs hit 130mph on the motorway if u push it.

Handling is immense, proper BMW multilink suspension not the crappy stuff you get on most hatches. (Don't get a compact cos they have different rear suspension that is not as good)

Also really well equipped for a car over 10 years old.

Repairs are usually quite pricey but it doesn't go wrong very much so it probably balances it out well. I also spend a bit more on good tyres and genuine BMW parts because they are worth it.

I don't know why some people spend over twice as much on some rubbish hatchback when u can have something this this.

I'd rather go for an older 5 series than a 3 series tbh. E39's hold my heart for bimmers.

Anyways, how many other hatches have you driven?

I don't doubt that the 3 series is one of the best rear wheel drive "small" cars, but have you ever driven anything like a focus or an r32 golf? Being fwd the focus is surprisingly nimble, and on the face of it I bet an st170 would beat around a 2.0litre 3 series of the same age.

I work for a breakdown company, and it's liek the 316 is near enough a 1.8, the 318 a 2 litre, the 320 a 2.1

It's mental badge advertising nowadays!

Anyways, picking up the new car on the 24th!

1.8 TDCi Sport,

Got some plans for it, involving intercooler, remap and possibly bigger turbo.

I bet it wouldnt. 2.0 3-series has the almost exactly same power (170ps or 168bhp) but is RWD, has more advanced suspention, beefier brakes and wider tyres.

The 316i and 318i (E46 model): 316i came with either a 1.9 or 1.8l engine dependent on year, the 318i with a 2.0, and the 320i between 2.0 and 2.2.

You ever seen a 170 round the twisties?

That independant rear control blade suspension is a work of art, not to mention the 300mm brakes are more than adequate.

I bet it would keep up with the 3 series, and with a good driver beat it, although the same goes for a 320 with a good driver.

A 170 might not be the quickest in a straight line but it's definitely one of the best fwd cars when it comes to a cornering.

Would be interesting to see them both go around something like brands hatch,

So, it's winter and I don't have a driving or access near my house to clean the car properly. In summer I take it to my parents anse their driveway but in winter I take my car to those public jet washes in this weather along with my wash mitt. I use the brush for the wheels after a quick blast with the jetwash and the local ones have a nice foam solution that works quite well.

It keeps the crap off the car and it looks pretty shiny afterward. Beats spending hours cleaning for it to be **** up in no time at all.

Example:

Cool cars guys. I will post some pic of my baby, aka my car. My 2006 Dodge Charger SRT 8. The first pic is what my baby looked like before I got her customized. The rest of the pics is after I got her customized. Let me know what you all think. Sorry about the different sizes, Photobucket won't let me resize them, unless I am doing something wrong.

@TLC: Yeah, I would have hoped for a manual shift, primary because of this certain excitement I get when I shift between gears in a fast car. Sounds weird but yeah. Still love my Charger though.

Automatics are cool sometimes, like when you're tired and just want to relax, or on a road-trip or something, but anything with a V8 and RWD should be illegal to not offer MT. It's okay if they make AT versions, but to not OFFER a 6 speed at all is extremely peculiar.

It's like only making the prius with a 6-speed short gear-box and stiff racing clutch.

You're sh*tting me,

A vauxhall astra being better than a focus? You're seriously sh*tting me right?

Whenever people are reviewing family hatches it normally goes

Focus or Golf First

Something Japanese

Something American

Something Chinese mixing the above two

Vauxhall.

It's gonna be tracked occasionally and I need something that yaknow... turns corners.

Besides this one's higher specced than similar aged 3 series, which would rape me on insurance.

Also with the amount of recalls and problems I deal with day to day with vauxhall's such as Fuel injector/pump failures, seatbelt pretensioners, general electrical faults, handbrake faults: whenever you press the button the handbrake cable breaks away and leaves your car to roll down a hill, yank it up and it breaks the ratchetting system.

They used plastic brake lines on some of them!

yikes and i think the new focus's are good compared to all the asian cars which have become too much of the norm

The Focus has been a well placed in its marketplace and its known for being pretty much the best for the money.

Personally I would have gone for a Mondeo ST220 or similar, the Focus can suffer from lift off oversteer quite badly.

Dup: the mondy is a bit wooden to drive, quite like the lift off oversteer, reminds me of an old clio, cept a lot sturdier and less... french.

tax and running costs put me off a fair bit too! spesh the insurance, got quoted at 8k!
