Got her cleaned up the other day (hasn't been washed before that since October believe it or not..) & will be trying out that tire spray soon, just gotta buy it from some where. So glad the weather is cooperating lately.

oh, and I totally wanna use a claybar on this damn thing. I'd probably need 3 or something like that.

Went for a drive so far away from home for no real reason other than boredom and the itch to explore. Had a blast. Whole trip lasted around 3 hours, there and back.

zlOukna.jpg

Haven't had that much fun in a while, and I kinda needed it. Getting some new tires and rims very soon. The old, mismatched wheels will be removed. I'll be keeping them for dirt tires, since I love how they do offroad. And I'll be having some nice rims accomanied by some Potenza S04s. I'd say what rims I'd be getting, but I'm gonna keep them secret...for a surprise! :3

By what's occurred within the last few weeks, it seems as if some contributions can be made here- big images in the spoiler below.

So what I have come to buy as a first car is a 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire 1.6, which has been sat for three years in a breakages yard (with no MOT, tax or documents- fun) as the owner wanted to use it for a Cosworth reshell but never got around to it, and so it was sold on to myself. It's done 86,000 miles and I managed to get it at a very reasonable price that made it a worthwhile project to buy, even with the damage detailed below.

HcJOQIM.jpg

If it isn't immediately obvious in the photo, then it came with some pretty garish five spoke, low profile tires. These hopefully will be replaced with something more appropriate, ie a pair of 14 inch Mini/superlites hopefully.

What the car also came with though was:

-Spax suspension all around

-Stainless steel exhaust (I think)

-A pair of horribly connected speakers

-The lifestory and invoice history of the previous owner, a self-employed electrician (Way too much private info was in the backseats)

-Instant win Macdonalds small fries/Mcflurry monopoly tickets from 2012

-Endless amounts of "Now that's what I call.." CDs

8GDM47l.jpg

YETcUYU.jpg

These shots were before I cleaned it- even still, as you can see the seats and door linings are pretty ruined and are going to end up being chucked out, after I've cleaned them to the best of my ability to pass it's MOT. I might keep the rear ones out if I'm honest, as I plan in the future to make this a drift car, which sounds like sh*t justification but they do weight a fair bit.

EXC8WDk.jpg

And this is the damage- a slight rear end shove that hasn't compromised the integrity of the boot, which was my main concern as I went to see the car. It's within my experience to have a new section welded in, so that'll be tended to in the future. Also the bumper- held in by a bolt and three wooden nails on the other side. :D The "it'll do" approach is the theme throughout.

8ERLjjV.jpg

But the main point about this car is that where it matters- sills, suspension turrets, underside etc- it's all in perfectly decent nick, even better than expected for a car sat for three years. For now, the immediate future plans are to get the thing running (air filter missing and battery is shot, alongside a literally rusted oil filter and other things. pic), road legal and drivable, and replace the tattered rear bumper and rather wank wheels, plus lights. Long term plans are vague at the moment- the plan is to make it a drift car within the future, and so the rather underpowered 1.6 will probably have to go in the place of something- probably the 2.0 DOHC EFI/Pinto engine is what i'm thinking at the moment. Potentially a Cosworth grille at some point, as I'm not a big fan of the current one and a closer-ratio diff along the way, for what little impact it may or may not have; basically, things are up in the air.

I don't intend to hoon it into walls when it does end up being drifted, either- you're not a hero for being an idiot, and I don't intend to ruin the good deal I orginally got just because of access to more disposable income in the future when it goes skidding.

Damn I haven't seen a Sapphire in years, especially one that isn't a Cossie these days. Great car!

As a project that Saph is kinda appealing. I'd be tempted to see if I could source a Scorpio 2.9 Cosworth engine or another cheap breathed-on Cologne V6. Plenty of power for learning to drift and dirt cheap compared to going YB.

Ford 302ci V8s fit too, if you can find one. In fact, factory Sierras came with them. There's also the old RV8 which fits easily.

I very nearly got an old XR4x4i for nothing a few years ago, sadly I had nowhere to put it.

My plan at the time was to transplant the running gear into a Mk1 Focus bodyshell.

guys it's happening.

dropped the Bird off at 3R Auto on Monday. she's 85% finished this afternoon when I went back to check on it.

the stock guts that were removed

io60vvy.jpg

new longtube headers

ZEVKu6A.jpg

they run 3-inch diameter throughout, into high flow SLP cats

LyycWq3.jpg

the new straight Y-pipe runs past the new electronic cutout

00w9p29.jpg

when the cutout is closed exhaust will continue out through the new Borla muffler

KZfH35x.jpg

the only work left to do is wire up the little electric cutout switch, tighten everything up, and tune it.

I'm gonna' have them hide the switch inside the ashtray in the center console which flips open and closed. I don't smoke cigarettes so it's completely useless. when everything is finished it will flip open like a f/ckin James Bond gadget and I can 'switch on' extra horsepower simply by freeing up a lot of the backpressure. an open cutout lets me bypass the catback area of the exhaust and dumps it straight out.

it's supposed to snow again this week, like tomorrow :sigh:

otherwise we'll get her tuned and I'll have it back before the end of the week. can try and get some proper footage of the new sounds and see what the power gains actually feel like.

Definitely considering one of the Cologne V6's as an option, just mainly been having the price of insurance in mind for whatever I'll do in the future- although I've had some very reasonable quotes for a provisional licence, things significantly jump up at a full one, so it's just making considerations of which swap becomes affordable first, and whether waiting it out is worth it for the better options for engines such as the Cologne.

Also a Sierra with a Scorpio Cosworth swap did a stint in the BDC and was pretty successful, full Driftworks thread here. (If you ask me, the winning bid of £2,500 for this is just criminal)

yeah, the factory fabrication was so restrictive on the heads, it's ridiculous.

I'm gonna' see about selling the stock exhaust kit and SLP ram-air box. lots of people in the LSx community still trade in those parts. the stock tubing has those nice mandrel bends and it's still in great structural condition. but you're right those old headers are trash that nobody is going to want :pp

Those look a lot better than the wheels you had before. They're 18s right? And the others were like, 19s? I remember not liking them because they were too big, but maybe I'm remembering wrong. I think 18s are perfect and 19s are the borderline maximum for E46s, E39s & E38s.

I prefer them to the old ones but still think it looks a bit overwheeled. Something to do with there being so much metal on the wheels perhaps?

That said, as far as OEM E90 18" wheels go, I'm a big fan of Style 162s on an E46:

p1010366u.jpg

Quirky.

I also thought I'd like 17" Style 194s on an E46, but actually I'm not sure about it at all:

Awesome stang, i would watch out with the little rust that has started underneath the left side of the bumper though. Would be a shame if that started spreading like a cancer.

Yup these are 18's, and my old setup were 19's. I didn't mind them, but I prefer the 18's as I like to have a bit meatier sidewall. 19's can be good looking on them but they have to be the right style, offset, width etc..

I considered the 162's at one point along with either the 261's or 264's off the 135i's. I settled with the 189's as I really liked the thick spokes and the higher offset which pushes them out real nice compared to my old setups. That could be what your seeing as well.

Over summer I'll be looking for a set of 17" wheels for next winter, weather that be OEM or aftermarket (maybe I can find a set of style 44's which is what this car had from factory).

we just got the WS6 back from the shop but she's back in the garage already.

it's snowing in Denver again. and there's a car show we're supposed to take it to this Saturday :(

sh/t sucks.

but the work came in under budget and on time. could not have turned out nicer. sounds incredible, looks great. you can feel the difference immediately, hear it immediately. promise better pictures and video coming in the near future. but for now, check out my f/ckin' cutout switch; hidden right inside the ashtray how I wanted it. so slick.

See, any time I see someone use that duel-intake hood on anything other than a properly done car, it's laughable.

Das nice.

All I had time to do yesterday was clean the engine bay out.

Installed my fog light delete panels today. I was worried they wouldn't match the color of the bumper, since it's spent about twenty years in the sun by now, but they're actually almost a perfect match. I plan on eventually sanding/priming/painting everything below the painted portion anyway, but until then, they look a hell of a lot better than my old fog lights did. Here's a refresher if you don't remember how bad they were.

I'll have to take better pictures earlier in the day (and after washing it), this was the best I could do with the sun going down:

^I'm really excited for the rod run in a couple weeks, although this is my fifth year going and I still don't know where to post the pictures here. I think I've done it in the Spotted thread in the past, and will probably do the same this year, but it always feels wrong because Spotted to me is for, like, "hey I was out getting groceries and I saw _______ in the parking lot." You know, sh*t that was spontaneous, not car shows and such. I'm probably just looking too far into it, though, but I just don't want people to get upset when they go in there expecting a few pictures per reply and then suddenly I post like 20+ pictures and bog their internet down.

Edit: actually like at least half of everything that gets posted in that thread is from car shows and such so disregard everything above I'm just an idiot.

Anyway staying on topic, here's a better shot of my deleted fogs. They're pretty much invisible when light isn't shining directly on them, which is exactly how they should be. Although, now that the most glaring flaw is taken care of, I feel my eye drawn to the faded center grill and emblem. I wanted to paint the center grill when I painted the two side grills, but it's impossible to remove it from the kidneys without breaking them, so I have to mask everything off and paint them like that. As for the emblem, it's just expensive.

Reminds me how this is the only thing i have left from the good old 80's M3 after a suv plowed through the back, and the other emblem the only thing is have left from my first car, a Chevy Malibu Classic.
