My mom's 04 Escape is in the shop with an alternator problem, so her friend loaned her this piece of sh*t. It's a 94, auto, 4 banger Cavalier. The thing is slow as balls, the exhaust pipe fell off and she makes a lot of noise. Not fun at all, but god is it sturdy. Might have to steal it away for a little Demo Derby tounge.gif

Ive owned 3 Cavaliers, they're great cars. My first car was a 93 Cavalier V6 that I still have, I put 23,000 miles on it since I bought it and its still running strong at 185,000. I had a 91 Cavalier V6 wagon too, which admittedly was a POS. And finally I had a 94 Cavalier 4 cylinder... I beat the crap out of it and it still managed to get 25mpg city. The motor blew in that one but it was my fault... the timing chain tensioner broke and I assume bits of it got in the oil and I never changed it. I sold it to my friend who wanted the trans out of it, he drained the oil and said it was a metallic silver color. I'm so mad at myself for that because like I said that thing was awesome on gas.

Can't be Arsed to obscure the registration this time.

Your lucky you don't get pulled over for those real lights. Non-yellow or white rear indicators, no rear reflectors/fog-light (I can't tell which you've got but you've only got one) and non-quite reversing lights are 3 points/£60 fine each if you get unlucky with someone anal enough to pull you over form them. That's an instant driving ban...

fuel pressure regulator

I've never understood the purpose in fitting FPR kits to vehicles that are still running standard injection and fuel pumps.

As for the scratches, T-cut, machine polish followed by a good buff with a very light cutting compound would probably do it if they're just in the lacquer. If its down the the metal, then you might need them refurbished in order to get rid of the marks.

Really? How could you justify that? Round here, they've been getting incredibly tough on people who are displaying things like illegal plates, illegal window tints and lights such as these. In fact, we've had cases of cars being impounded or even crushed for being unroadworthy for things like that. Not saying I agree with it- as long as they display and function as they should I couldn't care less- but just a bit of a caveat with regards to them. Most of the time, they'll pull you over and tell you to remove them before they do anything.

A mate of mine bought an 08 plate A4 recently from an auction, got it insured and was just driving around when he spotted the blue and reds in his rear bieew mirror, when he pulled over he was informed by the officer that the car had illegal tinted windows, he explained he had no idea as he only recently bought the car but the officer didn't take his word and gave him 3 points and a fine on his licence, to add insult to injury the officer made him remove the tints whilst he watched and now his windows look rather scratched.

imo tints look sh*t on alot of cars, the A4 actually looked pretty good.

I've got privacy glass on my A4, but they're Audi fitted, smoked rather than stick-on film, and within the legal light limits. At the end of the day, the law is the law, and whilst I may not necessarily agree with some judgements, its better that they are enforced than not.

They can fine you hear for it, but I've never heard of them making you remove it on the side of the road. Really, they only mess with you when it's 5% or 3% (limo tint). 35% is technically the legal limit here in TN. 20% is the darkest legal limit in the US (in AZ so still technically illegal in TN) and is what my friend runs and he's never had problems with the law from it. It's what I'll eventually be running.

Round here is where? My plates are 100% legal worldwide. Tints are not illegal anywhere I've been (met a jolly non-driver today who wants them banned) and the tinted lights pass MOTs every time. If mista plod gets arsey I know my rights. Nuff said.

Buckinghamshire- Aylesbury vale. As occasionally featured on Road Wars, as it's Thames Valley Police. MOT centres aren't that hot on things like that- at the end of the day, they don't really care about finnikity things like this- especially when they're dedicated MOT centres rather than garages that offer MOT services.

Taken from the current MOT requirements.

LIGHTS

All required lights are checked for:

• Operation.

• Condition.

• Security.

Side lights and headlamps:

• Acceptable make/model.

• Dip and aim must be within specified perameters Stop lights, indicators and hazard lights*

• Acceptable make/model

• Lights, indicators and hazard lights must not interfere with each other whilst in operation.

• Indicators, stop lights and hazard warning lights function. Rear fog lamps**

• Must be fitted to the centre or offside of the vehicle.

• Tell-tale must work.

• Must not be affected by other lamps and not be obscured.

• Must be red.

Number plate lamps

•All original lamps must be fitted and working.

Rear reflectors

•There must be two reflectors fitted reasonably symmetrically, securely attached and not obscured.

On those two counts, your car should in theory fail. If Plodd decide to pull you over, having a valid MOT certificate won't be a justification for having illegal lights- for all they know, they could have been fitted after your MOT. Most of the time you'll be left alone as long as the lights shine the correct colour, and the reflectors are correctly displayed. You'll pass on the first one, but not on the second one as as far as I can tell your not displaying any rear reflectors, only a rear fog light.

Like I said before, I have no objection to them myself, just a friendly warning that if you do get pulled over they can bugger you for it, and there's sod all you can do about it. In all fairness, answering back or getting arsey with a copper is likely to change their response from fining you, issuing a removal notice and logging your car so that if it's seen with illegal lights again it will be seized, to just seizing it straight away.

Your rear plate isn't illegal in font or style, but is your car an import? Square (as opposed to rectangular) plates are only meant to be permitted on vehicles first registered outside of the UK, with certain listed exceptions permissible when the design of the vehicle demands a square plate (the current Land Rover Discovery springs to mind). Then again, that's a very seldom-enforced law.

-EDIT-

Edited to add- if you are involved in an accident with darkened front or rear lights, your insurance company will check to see whether the lights sports the CE marking that indicates that they conform to British regulations. If the lights have been modified by the owner, or if the replacement set fitted do not show this symbol, the car will be treated as unroadworthy and the insurance company will revoke their cover. Even if the accident is entirely the fault of the other party, you'll likely be left holding the can as you will be treated as if you are liable for driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

-EDIT 2-

I think the specific regulation indicates that something like "50% of the surface of the rear light should illuminate" when braking or with the lights on. Of course, that will be to different levels, but if you can't identify between the two they will likely be treated as interfering with with each other in operation. As I can't speak for exactly how bright your lights are, I can't judge, but I've seen cars with much lighter rear lights be shafted under these regulations.

I appreciate the information dog_day, but if these people can't even spell on their own list of rules ("perameters" -OK...) how am I expected to take them seriously? I've been pulled over less than five times in over three years of ownership. Never were my lights cause for the concern. I've seen dozens of cars here with front windows tinted illegaly. If Kate Middleton were reclining naked behind the wheel she'd enjoy absolute privacy. Are these drivers routinely getting fined for this violation, I don't know...

Cops always get a polite response, the W*nkstainer ones (usually a bloke) are often accompanied by a savvier, female partner.

At least I know to avoid driving through Buckinghamshire. tounge.gif

Unfortunately visionist your plates are illegal, and should the plod want to they can do you for it and slap you with a fixed penalty notice, and you'd have no leg to stand on. Believe me I've been there with that one this year already. Just because it passes an MOT doesn't mean it is road legal, MOT just checks road worthiness.

My sisters car parked outside the house, at 11PM at night in a cul-de-sac, so no through traffic and it's in a quiet area as well, managed to a get a £60 fix penalty notice because of the number plates that were illegal. Despite being MOTed a week before, and the plates being on the car for the last couple of years.

If you get an arse of a cop, they'll throw the book at you and there is nothing you can do about it. Argue till your blue in the face, the courts will just laugh and say they are illegal.

My correctly spaced plates are made by a highstreet company to legal specifications. The tax I paid on my registration keeps the courts running. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Paying tax, VED and registration costs don't give you a right to break the law, though. It doesn't matter whether you've paid for the same court system that you get dragged through for doing it- if anything, its just ironic. I'm not in any way suggesting that you deserve to get pulled over or anything like that, but the "I pay my taxes so can do what I want" or "haven't you got something better to do" attitudes are the two you see most commonly being used by motorists who know they're in the wrong and just want to flout the law or think they're above it because they do some things that they're legally required to do. If your humble and honest in your claims that you don't know your in the wrong, your far less likely to end up getting your car impounded, picked over and potentially scrapped- and far less likely to be hauled in front of a magistrate and have your license revoked because they've picked through your car and found 15 points worth of issues.

You may not like it but its the way things are.
