quadrant_69
Just wondering, do you need a hub to connect two computers together or do you just need a ethernet cord, also if it's just the cord I have no idea on how to connect them together I've made a new connection but I can not get any incomming calls from my other pc, can someone please explain (in detail) on how to connect them together, help appreciated. CrazyDude
I know you can connect two computers directly through ethernet, but I've never done it, now have I seen it done. If all you want is a network connection between the two then yes you should get a hub. It's simple to set up. Connect both computers to the hub with ethernet cables then power on the hub. Then, on both computers, go to Control Panel>Network Connections>Right-click Local area connection>Properties>Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)>Properties and make sure both "Obtain Ip address automatically" and "Obtian DNS server address automatically" are both selected. Of course this will mean your hub will have to have a DNS server installed on it, which most hubs do. But just to be sure post the model number of the hub you own on here and I'll look. If you don't already own one, then get this one. Ohh and you'll need to make sure that both computers are in the same workgroup. But I'll tell you how to do that after you answer the other questions
jersiq
If you are just hooking up the PC's together without a hub you will have to use a crossover cable, not a standard ethernet patch cable. Click me please Now if you want to share your broadband connection (or dial-up) you can use WINDOWS ICS (this is assuming you have a post WIN98 Operating System. However, if this would require two ethernet cards on the host (one connected to the internet) computer. If you really want to share a broadband you should purchase a router (some are pretty cheap now) or there may be a possibility that your broadband modem will have some type of router functionality with it. Provide some more info and we can help further. Of course this will mean your hub will have to have a DNS server installed on it, which most hubs do. But just to be sure post the model number of the hub you own on here and I'll look.If you don't already own one, then get this one. I think you also meant DHCP, and from any hub I have looked at (considering the layer of the TCP/IP protocol hubs work on) they don't have DHCP. But then again I haven't looked at hubs in a while. millermagic
You can use regular strait thru patch cables and a hub to connect. You don't need an internet connection to connect through a hub.
