Fix for some of the audio problems in GTA:SA

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys (& Girls),

Bought GTA:SA yesterday, and have been having the same audio problems that quite a few of others have encountered - the voice not syncing with the video, and some of the sounds cutting out for no reason (although you can still hear the radio if you're in a car)

After reading some posts that recommended turning Hardware Acceleration off using dxdiag, I did a bit more investigation. I mean, it worked, but who really wants to have a soundcard only to not utilise it?

Anyways, to get to the point. I've found a solution which worked for me, so hopefully it'll work for you guys too.

In your GTA:SA directoy, which should look something like \Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas\, in the root directory, you'll find a file called "eax.dll". It would appear that this file is the problem.

Now, go onto google.com and search for eax.dll. You should find one which is version 3.0.6.6. (Funnily enough, the version that GTA:SA comes with is version 4.0.0.1)

Once you've downloaded "eax.dll" 3.0.6.6, rename the "eax.dll" in your GTA:SA directory to something else of your choosing, then copy the "eax.dll" that you just downloaded into the GTA:SA directory. At this point, if you've turned down your hardware acceleration, turn it back on.

Load up GTA:SA, and you should find that your audio problems are now GONE!!! Woohoo!!! The audio should also sync back up with the video also. (I don't know why, but it does)

What I suspect is that, Rockstar went with a very very recent release of the EAX.dll component, for which the drivers haven't been updated to handle, or any other number of reasons. Nevertheless, by going back to a slightly older version, it resolves the key problems, and doesn't degrade the performance at all. Sweet.

Hope that helps you guys. Share the fun!

sh*t, that's not very good news, that means my soundcard is the problem. I think I'm gonna download some new drivers from Creative, maybe that will work. sarcasm.gif

Ive tryied that...But, try, cant do things worse wink.gif

I have the Creative SB Live! soundcard and I had been having similar problems reported by others.. audio cutting out, some sounds worked great, others non existent. I tried some of the things others suggested, replacing the eax.dll file (be careful with that, the only version 3.066 I found was downloadable from a pay site)., tried turning off hardware acceleration, none of that worked.

However, I did remember that I've had some similar problems running dvd movies on my PC and the solution was usually resetting the speaker setup. I do have surround sound speakers, but unless I manually turn Off the surround sound config, I miss sounds when I play DVD's.

So I opened my 'Sounds and Audio Devices Properties' for my sound card, selected the Audio tab, and up at the top by 'Sound Playback' where it lists the Default Device, there's a button called 'Advanced'. Selecting that gives you the options to choose your speaker setup. I experimented with this some, and found that setting my speakers to 'quadrophonic' seems to work best.. the ambient sounds are back, as well as the missing sound effects, and there's still a sort of surround effect that is provided by four speakers.

Give that a try, and if that doesnt work, pick 'stereo headphones' or 'stereo desktop speakers'. Just experiment with those combinations until you find the one that works best for your card.

I dont know if this will work with non SB Live! cards, but I think all the Creative sound cards have similar properties.

Hope that helps some of you still missing the sounds and effects!

Hey guys,

Sorry for not replying earlier. Was sleeping...zzzz

Anyways, here's the link to the EAX.DLL file that I downloaded.

http://www.webzila.com/?wz=dll

Just type in the search bar "eax.dll" and then it's all go from there. Hope that helps.

Hey guys.

Sorting out some SB/Audigy 2 probs atm, or trying to. In process of which I found there's a SB HD driver fix as well as whatever current "regular" driver fix which "solves performance problems with some creative cards" or something similar. Might not be immediately obvious, might sort something for someone.

Check it out.

Uhh at www.creative.com obviously.

Here's a funny thing about how windows handles DLL's.. if the DLL is a registered DLL and you delete it, it will sit in the recycle bin (unless you have deleted it completely) and the system will still reference the DLL in the recycle bin.

The best way to make sure that your system is picking up the right DLL:

from a cmd prompt:

cd \ whatever your SA dir is

regsvr32 /u eax.dll

rename the eax.dll at this point, copy in the new eax.dll then:

regsvr32 eax.dll

That way you'll make sure the system is picking up the new(3.0.6.6) one.

Eax.dll version 3.066 didnt worked, but older 3.065 works smile.gif

With original eax.dll 4.0xx game was crashing 2-3 times in hour, with 3.066 no so much crashes, but some stuttering in game.

Now im using eax.dll version 3.065, and havent crashed at all, but still got (very)little stuttering when rains.

Soundcard is SB audigy ES, with latest drivers

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a fairly old (year 2000-2001) Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! with Cambridge Soundwords 5.1 surround sound speakers. Swapping the eax.dll with v3.x version from DLL-Files.com has fixed most of the sound problems. Before all the SFX would stop playing after a few minutes in the game, only cutscenes and radio would still play. I made a backup of the DLL which comes with GTASA, upzipped the downloaded one to the GTA San Andreas folder and it all seemed to work fine.

From the windows system tray (where the clock is) I checked what Windows thought my speaker settings were. Right-clicked the speaker icon, chose Adjust Audio Properties, chose the Audio tab of the window which came up, clicked the Advanced button of the Sound Playback group and it was already set up as 5.1 surround sound speakers which matches my setup.

The sound does occassionally go really quiet for a few seconds but it comes back properly afterwards. Congrats to whoever first found this because it really helped me out. smile.gif

ive encountered this problem as well.. i had it working the first time, then i gave it a little rest and wanted to start a new game.. then it stopped working... f**en R* did a piss poor ass job on this game.. seriously, i would rather wait couple more months than to play it with these damn glitches!! I lost all my respect for R*..

=-------------------------------=

and i downloaded the 3.0.6.5 version since i couldnt find the 3.0.6.6.. i turned off the acceleration using dxdiag.. still no luck.. im very pissed.
