Wolf68k
No I didn't say "speakers" I said "PC speaker". Inside your case is a speaker. If you ever go to a friends house where they built their own or if you ever had an older pre-built computer, when you start up computer you'll see the BIOS screen and then at some point hear a beep coming from the case, that is the PC speaker inside the case. If you were to open the case you should see a speaker near the front of the case, usually mounted pointed down but sometimes mounted pointing to the front. Based on this my idea was to ground out the PC speaker by simply laying a paper clip onto it's wire connections directly on the speaker it self....NOT THE MOTHERBOARD. This is safe and shouldn't hurt anything or cause any ill effects. Doing this while the sound is playing will tell you if it's coming from that speaker or the internal modem speaker. But again I don't really suggest you do this with your lack of knowledge. Just because you ran NAV doesn't mean it couldn't still be a virus. Every anti-virus is known for missing viruses from time to time. You ran Ad-Aware, that's good but I also suggestion getting in the habit of running Spybot as well, not that I think this will correct the problem either but hell it couldn't hurt and most likely will find things Ad-Aware missed. I would still like to hear about you loading into the BIOS menu and listening for the siren, and then starting up in Safe Mode (btw to do this hold down the F8 key during start up, then select Safe Mode from the boot options screen) and again give it a listen. It could be a third-party software program running warning you of a high CPU temperature or some other warning like that. Programs like this will use the PC Speaker because almost all cases have them and they don't reply on a sound card to be heard.
Krusty.
OK I will do what you said about starting up in the BIOS menu. So when i turn on my computer, press DEL? Sorry if i have got that wrong i really am a dumbass when it comes to computers . I read on the black screen it says Press DEL for something or rather (i forgot). The safe mode option: How long should i listen for, about 5 minutes or just play around on my computer like i would usually and see if it happens? Krusty.
Im really sorry for the bump and the triple post but i still need help Well, i started it in Safe Mode for about 10/15 minutes and the sound wasnt there. Im now running normal mode and it is... Any other suggestions?
Wolf68k
How long after being in normal start up did the sound start playing again? Try this create a temp account, limited or admin access (I would suggestion admin access, explained below) it shouldn't matter, passowrd doesn't matter. Restart the system and then log into that, normally yes just logging out of the current and then into the new temp account would work but just incase this issuse lives in memory. Wait to see if happens again, if if does use CTRL+ALT+DEL to get to the TaskManager and see what all is running. BTW, whatever happened you to using HijackThis and posting your log? cronusthetitan
I'd love to have an half hour alone with your pc. At first I thought it would be the fan. I was going to say kick it, see if it stops. Then I heard it and thought it was your modem messing up. But if that was the case, then you wouldn't be able to get online and post. My conclusion is that it's your motherboard. I'm gonna bet you a dollar you have and ASUS motherboard with ASUSprobe. A program that moniters temperature and fan speeds. Now if your computer is overheating, it's probably because you're fan speeds are too slow to cool the motherboard and processor. Now, since this problem began by itself after a short amount of time, I'm gonna assume that dust got into your tower and is gunking up the fans. Solution: Kick it. Seriously, but not that hard. It will knock some dust loose and the fan may resume to it's normal speeds. Either that, or open the case and blow it out with canned air. Yeah, kick it. Preventative maintainance: Clean your f*cking house. Getting rid of all that dust will keep your electronics in good health, and may just help with that asthma as well. Wolf68k
It can't be ASUSProbe because I have it too and when it makes a warning sound it's through the normal speakers and not the PC Speakers and it's just a ticking sound.
cronusthetitan
it depends on how you've got it set up. Mine goes through the system speaker. I have the option to put it through the system, normal speakers, or modem speaker. If everything checks out on the comp, he/she can just unhook the speaker. Then again, it could be some wicked, odd virus that is designed to make that sound. I know some pretty creative programmers who could probably do something like that fairly easy. BTW... Norton sux, but it's better than nothing. You should try Macafee, or AVG Free. A combination preferable. Oh, and Zone alarm. Krusty.
Well, since i started this topic the noise has happened less and less... Some times i just get the one beep and it goes away for a day, but i can guarantee that the noise will come back.
owningj00
Yes, It comes from the tower. I obviously do have a modem(internet thingy) built inside the tower because our internet wire just plugs into the back of it.The tower cant be screwed because this noise started about a month or two after we got the computer. No the noise is nothing like the dial up sound. Up just a constant siren noise. Think of a police car just always going nee norr on and on etc. Is it like a humming siren if thats the case then I believe that is normal. If it does; that's the modem making the noise. No that's not it. When the link he gave me before was still working, the sounds was more like a British police siren. Something sort of like this http://www.tnaccess.com/users/seahawk/hilo.wav but of course sounded more like a midi audio file might or an old classic video game and also a bit slower. Wolf68k
Could you PLEASE just post your HijackThis log? I've asked for it about 3 or 4 times now. Look here is even a link to a direct download of it http://downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip Just unzip it and run it. Do the scan. Save the log to you desktop. Open the text file with NotePad. Select all and then use Edit->Copy. Come back here and hit reply. In the text field where you make your post, Edit-Paste. Submit. I might be able to find what is causing the problem or if nothing else help you get rid of some spyware still floating around your system.

Wolf68k
In a nut shell, HijackThis (HJT) just scans things in the registry (for the most part) and reports back everything that isn't pre-set by Windows. The good and the bad. It doesn't detail every single registry line just the ones that could be a cause of problems. Where ever you see me say "clean it" this means in HJT click the box next to that line and and click the Fix button. That for me would do nothing more than piss me off. My own personal notes: 46 processes running. Good lord man. I've got maybe 30 just after start up and about 3 or 4 of those i don't really need. I see you have a Lexark printer. Yes? Want to save yourself a lot of CPU cycles and money in the long run. Get a Canon printer. I've got a S400, not great but fine for basic printing not something for big photo printing, but the ink is cheap. In fact at some online ink sites for that printer I can get compatible ink in kits of 3-black, 2-cyan, 2-maginta, 2 yellow for about $35 including shipping...where as at the same sites all of the Lexmark inks I've looked it for a single color tank set cost the same and the black tank would be about $20-30 per. Plus Canon, atleast in my case, there aren't any extra programs running at start up...they only run when called on during a print run and then they die when the job is over. And yet it'll still tell me when the tanks are running low while still allowing me to print but when the tank runs dry then it won't print at all....personally I like this so I can get the most out of my tanks and my ink buying dollar. My dad has a S900 which is even better for photo printing and day-to-day printing, plus it can do borderless printing (the S400 can't). Uses 2 extra color tanks a Photo Cyan and Photo Maginta, but other than that the tanks are pretty much the same as mine (not interchangable though) and just as cheap and long lasting. Think you have enough IM clients? Why do so many people feel the need to have MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger, AIM, and whatever else? Why not just pick one and use it or get something like Trillian and put them all in one nice and neat little package? Plus this way you can also uninstall the others. Saves CPU cycles, the number of things running from start up, and headache of switching between IM clients. Speaking of having a lot of extras. I noticed you have WindowBlinds, StyleXP and something called Stardock which is kind of part of WindowBlinds from what I can tell, all running and installed. Again I have to ask, why not just pick one. Personally I just run the classic mode, not even the default XP theme/style/whatever because I think it's bloated crap. Sorry for the rant but I really hate Lexmark, I'm not a big IM fan, and I don't care much for bloat that can and does but unneeded strain on the system while I'm trying to do something else like gaming. O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.timecomputers.comLooks like it'll reset IE so that timecomputers.com is the start page over and over. That for me would do nothing more than piss me off. Do you mean that my homepage will always be timecomputers? My homepage is gtaforums.com. The lexmark is a printer and a scanner in one. I also have an Epson C60 which is our printer, we use the lexmark for scanning as the ink is too expensive. Hey, dont take the IM programs out on me, my sister just moved out and half of this crap is hers . Yes i like windowblinds...how can i delete Style XP and the other thing? Ive never heard of ... stardock... Thanks, One last question before i delete the things you selected for me... Are you comletely sure this is OK, one thing i dont need is a f*cked computer... I can trust you as you have Karma stars and your a well respected member on these forums but this is my mums computer, im just the one that likes to keep it tidy and she knows nothing about computers...less than me... EDIT: I done it anyway and the siren is still there, shall i run Ad-Aware in safe mode as you instructed or do i have to download SpyBot? Wolf68k
NTLDIAL.EXE That's your dail-up. Ok cool, no problem. I wasn't sure what it is since like I said, Google can't give me a straight answer as to what it is. What would happen if you delete those timecomputers.com entries? Nothing bad, that much I can tell you. To go along with this, the IERESET.INF since it's also part of timecomputers.com I don't know if it'll reset your homepage but it seems it will reset your Start Page. The point is, getting rid of all of this shouldn't hurt your system in any way. Think about like this; if you reformat and reinstall the Windows cleaning from a Windows OS CD (not a pre-build maker's recovery disc) those entries won't be there and it'll still perform just as well. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exeRun Ad-Aware AND Spybot in Safe Mode, one of them should be able to detect and remove this. But I'm still working a link that has details on how to remove it manually Cant i just run Ad-Aware, what is the need for both? Because they both catch things the other misses. I've seen Ad-Aware run doing a full system scan which takes about twice as long to do and it catches some piece of ad/spyware. Then I've run Spybot and it catches more of the exact same piece of spyware that Ad-Aware caught...and in some cases what Ad-Aware missed when that piece ran again, it would have been able to put it self back into the system enough to do more "harm" if not completely back like normal. There is no harm in running both, other than your time waiting for the scan to finish but how much is your time worth compared to your piece of mind that your're double sure that there is no spyware on your system. StyleXP and Stardock removal, look in Add&Remove Programs control panel. They both should have their own entry there. Oh sure blame your sister for the IM crap huh? Why does everyone want to blame their sister or little brother for that? Fess up, you know you use it and you can't live with out it. Ok I'm just screwing with you. But seriously, if you don't use them remove them. Yes to both, run Ad-Aware and Spybot in Safe Mode. Sadly I have to admit, or clear something up atleast, I never said that the HJT log would for sure find whatever it is that is causing the siren. Only that it might help ID what it was, whether it was a piece of spyware or a virus or even a completely safe program giving off some kind of a warning. Create a new user account on that system and see if the siren shows up then, just ot be on the safe side don't connect to the net using that account. Just kind of hang around and wait. How long to wait? I don't know. How long does it take after you're logged into your normal account does it take for the siren to start up, or does it vary. Krusty.
Ok i shall download SpyBot in a minute... Yes it vary's the sound taken to come on, it will go on when it feels like it. I might try and create a new user in a minute, see if that works... EDIT: Man this is so f*cking annoying I went into Safe Mode, ran SpyBot and Ad-Aware at the same time The sound is still going off. Created a new account and it still did it. Im started to think, unless you have another option for me to do, that it might be a heating problem, thats all i can think of. Unless there is a way i can turn off the PC Speaker. Edited June 22, 2005 by Krusteee

Unless there is a way i can turn off the PC Speaker. Well first off, it's not a good idea to run them at the same time Leadtek WinFast mobo, right? And I think we already went through the BIOS looking for PC Health and nothing. And with you not knowing much about computers I'm reluctant to suggest flashing the BIOS to update them. If you lived near by I could do it for you, so it's too bad that's not an option. Another idea. Download Knoppix this is a LiveCD of Linux, basicly what that means is it's a verison of the Linux OS that lives completely on a CD and nothing gets installed to your system, no need to format a drive or partition or anything like that. You just download the ISO and burn it using Nero or Roxio and using their Burn Disc Image feature. Then you restart with the CD you just burned in. You just have to make sure that in the BIOS with the boot order that the CD/DVD drive comes before the HDD (personally I've got my set to first=floppy second=cd/dvd third=hdd). Then once you get Knoppix running, just stay in that for a while. There are somethings you can check out while you're there, and few games to keep you entertanted for a while (try out FrozenBubble if it's on there, a fun time-waster game). The point is to just hang around in there and see if the siren shows it's ugly head again. If it does, then it is for sure the mobo that is causing it and that a BIOS update might be in order. @cronusthetitan Who are you? The Fonz? This isn't a jukebox at Arnold's or a 30-year old TV we're talking about where hitting and kicking it can fix the snowy picture. When your system starts to run too hot, let me guess you're kicking the sh*t out of it? What do you do if that doesn't magicly work? Drop it out of a 2, or more, story window? cronusthetitan
Exactly. lol I think it's a heating problem caused by dust clogging the cooling fan. A kick should free it. Gotta show these things who's boss, ya know. For real though, open it up and take a can of compressed air and blow the thing out to get rid of the dust and see what that does. Krusty.
Thanks Cronus, but at the time being, the only person im listening to/ taking advice from is Wolf. Knoppix... Sorry about this one question i have: I have got Windows and you stated that its a Linux Operating System..(OS). But as you also said it installs NOTHING, right? OK I will do that. Is it capable of burning Knoppix to a CD using Windows Media? I dont have Nero, i thought it was sh*t.
Wolf68k
Thanks Cronus, but at the time being, the only person im listening to/ taking advice from is Wolf. Knoppix... Is it capable of burning Knoppix to a CD using Windows Media? I dont have Nero, i thought it was sh*t. No you can't use WMP. I competely understand about not likely Nero, it took me some time getting use to it years ago before it had the nice Wizard and was as User Friendly as it is now, but could still use some work. Roxio is also an options. Here are some freeware burning options; keep in mind you get what you pay for and I won't be able to help you much in their use since I've never used any of them....I still use Nero 5.5.something. http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gmm/fwcdburn.html Now cronusthetitan's idea of using a can of compressed air and blowing out an dust that is around the heatsink's fan and the heatsink it self is a good idea. It's the whole beating the crap out of your system part that I have a problem with. The thing to remember about using compressed air is that you use it in bursts, you don't hold the trigger the whole time you're spraying. Also don't hold tha can upside down while using it. You should see nothing coming out of the nozzle while spraying. If you see any kind of a mist come out, that usually means some moisture came out of the can or mixed with the air from the can and is now on your mobo. Don't panic, just make sure the power is off even better unplugged from the wall. Then wait for about a 30mins or more for it to dry out and it should be ok to start it up again. Krusty.
Well, for the time being, the noise has as suddenly as it came, gone! Thank you for your time, efforts and help. Now that ive mentioned it's stop, it'll probably come back. Thank you but be ready to help again...
