WindowsXP not allowing Adminstrator log-in.

Okay, my friend was having some problems loading WindowsXP, so we did a reinstall. After we did that, though, the only account available to log-in to was the Adminstrator account, and it wanted a password.

Well, we tried just pressing enter, and it says, "Windows could not log-on for the following errors: Either the specified domain does not exist, or could not be contacted," so I don't know what the hell is going on with it. It never prompted him for any kind of password or to make any other account, according to him (but he may've just missed it, in case any of you KNOW this to be the problem).

So, what do you think? Why the f*ck is Windows giving itself its own password and not letting him onto Windows.

Usually, the default password is 'administrator', but that might just be on my pc. I would suggest a reinstall.

He's already tried resinstalling it 3 times.

I forgot to mention that part.

Has he tried logging in without a password? Just typing: Administrator and pressing enter?

Then he is pretty f*cking screwed. You should try pm'ing wolf68k, he seems to have answers to everything

He is a bot.

Yes, he's tried without anything entereted, and with guesses as to what the password would be, and he gets the same thing back.

Hmm...

Click the 'advance options' ( I think that's what it's called ), then there is the domain. Set that to the name of the PC. And now try.

Cause your error is not a "password error" but an domain error, if it had been a "password error", I would know Windows for saying that "you miss typed the password".

Also;

Have you tried pressing cancel? Have you tried not typing anything in?

I think he must have accidentally reset it during the re-install, can he remember if he typed anything during the install?

To be perfectly honest I don't have a straight answer I can be allowed to give you since the advice is shady and can be used for bad as well as good.

Other than to say there is a LiveCD distro of Linux that you can get and boot from that has a tool on it that can attack the password file to help you figure out what the password(s) are on the account(s). Plus it has lots of other shady tools on it as well. It's rumored that if you download it the FBI track it *cough*BS*cough* but it is just a rumor.

The only other thought I have is one about making a password recovery disc. If you do a search in Google for password recovery or even password recovery floppy you can find many sites that can show you how to do this and tools to use.

Keep in mind that even with using these tools it could take a few minutes or serveral hours or even days for it tell you want the password is.

I've done this only once myself with my own system and it took a really long time for it to get to point that I was able to remember the rest of the password for myself. I made my main admin password really hard biggrin.gif

I do not remember the name of Linux LiveCD destro I was talking about above, so don't ask.

However if you need something recover your password, and if you'd take the time to FULLY read my previous post I give you a very easy way to find the tools, which includes making a bootable floppy or CD, which can help you do this.

Here is one such site that list a number of tools: http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm
