Game Crashes on PC when entering places

UPDATE - I did as Philes did and downloaded the AC97 drivers from Realtek themselves overwriting the ones provided by NVIDIA (I have an nforce chipset) This seems to have fixed the issue. One thing I did note however is when it rained all the audio went away except for the sound of the rain and the radio stations. So this bug seems to be directly related to the rain, which explains why it seems to happen randomly. I just got done playing 4 missions on 1024x768 on very high with AA on 3 frame limiter off and nothing unusual happened except for the above mentioned rain issue. I suggest if you're using an AC97 audio chip that you go to realtek.tw and download drivers. Please post here if this solution solves your issues as it did mine. Thank you Philes I would have never thought of that if it hadn't been for you.

UPDATE2 - This definitely fixed my issue, I've had one crash (not a reboot) since doing the above.

A lot of ppl have the same issue with similar setup's:

AMD CPU

NForce 2 Chipset

Ati RadeonX graphics card

For me since i changed settings (turned off AGP Fastwrite and AGP8X in Biossetup) yesterday, it still works like a dream.

Maybe an Idea for a forummoderator to create a sticky with all know issue's with different setups and possible solutions to those problems. Since there are several Game-crashin-random-rebooting-f*ckedup-graphics-Topics running now smile.gif

I found the random reboots to not be random at all infact I believe they're directly related to your audio chip + the rain ingame.

if you use an nforce chipset you have an AC97 audio chip, go to realtek.com.tw and download the 650 AC97 drivers and replace the NVIDIA provided ones.

Hey guys, thought i could help a bit.

The previous suggestion to turn DirectX support down is a valid one. My game kept crahing to windows ( u know the 'send error report' dialogue box) at the start of Ryder's cut scene, however after turning Sound Hardware acceleration down to 'Standard', 'Basic' or 'None' the problem has vanished. My only problem now is that when i try to punch someone the game wants to crash again.

I am running:

P4 3GHz

1GB DDR

GeForce 6800GT 128MB

SoundBlaster Live 24-Bit

ASUS P5GD1-PRO

Any help? Cheers!

Adding my 2 pennies...

Game loads.... starts game... do several things and it's fine, although SOMETIMES after entering the yellow house markers, the screen freezes, turns blue (no text) then the PC re-boots itself.

After it starts up again, windows shows a "The system has recovered from a serious error".

ATI X800 (PCI-e)

Intel P4 3.4

1Gb DDR

** ONBOARD AC97 SOUND **

SO...... I am going to try the sound update from realtek.tw after I get home from work. And let you know what happens after that.

But, yeah it is bloody annoying. I've only gotten to meet two people so fat and do a bit of spraying until it crashed. rahkstar2.gif

I have the same problem... mad.gif Game crashes when I enter the car at the Ryder mission.. It used to crash in barber shop/pizza place but now I can't even get there. Game crashes when I enter the car. I have updated all the drivers. Running Catalyst 5.6 etc... Some specs below. I have tried to lower the hardware acceleration in dxdiag and changed that eax.dll file but no help.

AMD XP1500+

Ati Radeon 9500PRO

200GB Seagate

768MB DDR

Windows XP Professional SP2

Sound Blaster 128PCI (And I think that it is that antique piece of crap which is causing all the problems.. Too old so new s*it doesn't work with it. Last driver update for that sound card was '01 so there are now updates for that even available.)

Vice City and GTA3 also does that sometimes but they crash randomly I think.. It isn't overheating because no other game does that but GTA-series and all temps are fine.. I have full-size ATX case, 120mm fan at the side of it and BeQuiet Colorline PSU so it shouldn't overheat.

I'll take out the SBPCI128 and try to play without it.. If it doesn't crash I'll go and buy a new sound card tomorrow. If it does crash.. well then I don't know what the f*ck I should do. Maybe fresh setup of Winblows.. sarcasm.gif But if someone has any idea what else could be causing these problems I would be glad to know. Oh yeah and game is 100% legit, no cracks etc.. used and I have full install with audio on HD.

Ok I tried with hardware acceleration OFF and same thing.. It locks up when I go in to the Ryder's car. If I go in to some other car it doesn't crash.. Wtf. Does someone have any idea what is causing this. I tried to play without sound card but the game cannot be played without one. tounge.gif

Umm.. I don't have an integrated sound chip.. tounge.gif My motherboard is ABIT KG7-Lite and my sound card is an old Sound Blaster 128 PCI and because the SBPCI128 is so old there are no new driver updates. The most "recent" one is something like 2001.. So I guess that I'll just have to buy new sound card? Well luckily those aren't too expensive.

I have this problem too - when I start the first real mission - going to the barber shop and then into the pizza thingie, my PC freezes ( = I see the picture of my character standing in the shop, the music is just one high tone) either when I enter the barber shop, or later when I enter the pizza place or (this just happend once) it freezes when I enter the car of my buddy at the beginning of the next mission.

My system specs:

Athlon 1700XP

512 Mb Ddram

ATI Radeon 9500 Pro (I tried both the Catalyst 5.6 AND the modified Omega drivers 5.4)

Sound Blaster Live! Sound card (using the newest driver - from march 2003)

Windows XP SP1 - with all the needed critical updates

Gigabyte GA7-DXR+ Motherboard (Athlon 760 Chipset) also with the newest drivers available.

DirectX 9.0C

I tried nearly all possible settings in the game (frame limiter on/off, effects details etc.), I also set sound hardware acceleration to standard. - no effect.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Out of interest...how many people are suffering from restarts, how many are suffering from just plain game crashes, and how many people are suffering from total system lockups when entering buildings/cars on random occasions?

Also, how many of you people bought the game, as opposed to downloaded it?

Hmm.

Mine seems to work fine now.

I *DO* have onboard realtek HD Audio sound and did try to update the drivers, but the Realtek installer got about 90% into it and shouted *FAILED* at me.

SO... i uninstalled everything realtek-wise, let Windows install the 'Microsoft AAU driver for HD Audio Bus 660/680" or similar.. and the game has worked FINE ever since.

Although every time i do walk into a building, I do wince because i think it WILL crash lol.gif

I think it is a same thing.. Computer restarts if you haven't disabled the automatic restart when crash. Default setting for XP is on but I have disabled all stuff like that because I don't want that my comp restarts by it self so it just freezes. tounge.gif Mine is 100% legit version. Bought it yesterday and haven't gotten it to work. mad.gif I'm going to buy a new sound card at monday and if that doesn't work then installing the Windows again.. Hope I'll helps. tounge.gif

Just wait for rockstar to release a patch or something, i have the exact same problem here too, and i couldnt be bothered re installing the game let alone reinstalling windows! - takes too much time. You're not 'that' obsessed with this game are you?!?!

Electricleash

My two pence.....

I am experiencing a similar crashing but it manifests slightly differently.

specs:

AMD64 3200+

NForce4 chipset

Geforce 6600GT

SBAudigy2

2GB RAM

Enermax Noisetaker 495W PSU

All drivers for the above are up to date

The crash has occured 2-3 times and only after I have completed one of the early missions. and it merely turns the screen into standby mode. No restarting, no BSOD. The machine's "doing something LED" is not flickering. I turned the speakers volume right up and there was a faint high pitched sound emanating. It requires a restart.

This first started happening after est. 2 hours of gameplay (the rain+sound effects played fine).

I do have the onboard AC97 sound, however, the SBAudigy2 has priority in my sound device selection.

It wont be an overheating issue, and I don't think its a graphics problem.

Might the AC97 cause problems even though its not being used to power the sound?

So far everyone who is using a sound blaster live! that I've met is having problems, so thats definitely a problem card, even with the latest drivers..

Also, how many of you people bought the game, as opposed to downloaded it?

I bought the game.

I like this game so I'd like Rockstar to make a lot of money so they make more like it.

Plus, I only steal things in video games. wink.gif

found a solution that's working (for me)...

I set Sound Hardware Acceleration in DXDiag to NONE - and the game's working perfectly for me (at least during the last two hours)...

it's realy frightening how many people have a kid of this problem too.

I've been looking for a solution of this since 3 days. But there is no why! My some could fix it by changing some bios options or something else, but in fact it's a bug of the game.

Because of this high number of people who have freezes, restarts etc. I'm convinced.

The only thing we can do is waiting for a patch!! mad.gif

Well...

it just worked 2 hours.

Now it freezes again - not THAT often than before, but often enough - no mission playable.

Well, chalk up another victim to shoddy Q/A!

I suffer from the 'crashes when entering cars sometimes, and crashes when entering buildings frequently' bug. I most frequently crash when entering that pizza place towards the beginning of the game (and subsequently, timeline in the game is irrelevant to the crashing). I've even crashed when starting the game before I show up on the screen in CJ's house (save location).

To define the crashes, the system just STOPS. It stops responding to ICMP pings from an adjacent computer on my LAN, etc...etc...

My system is as follows:

Athlon 1800XP

ASUS A7M266 761 southbridge chipset

AGP 4x (max speed for this older board)

ATI Radeon 9800 PRO w/ 256MB

1gb RAM.

SB Live! 5.1 audio card.

Onboard CMedia audio (I've tried removing the SB Live! and re-enabling/using the onboard sound, same crashes)

Brand new LG 16X DVD reader (also tried with software image made from my laptop DVD reader using daemon-tools)

Several other cards such as a hispeed USB 2.0 card and a 3com 10/100 LAN adaptor.

My drivers at the most recent ATI Omega drivers. I've tried with older drivers as well.

The system is not exibiting any other issues such as over temperature or swapping/disk i/o problems and does not have any virii or spyware as per norton anti virus corporate edition (ran weekly and in real time mode) and Spybot S&D ran weekly and updated frequently. The system is also patched to the most recent available patches .

About the last thing I could try is ripping the NVidia TI4400 from another machine and trying that card, but I really do not feel like going that far.

Any estimates as to how long it usually takes rockstar to fix this stuff? Was there ever even a GTA:VC patch? Speaking of which, I never had these problems with GTA3 or GTA:VC both of which I completed several times.

Are there any other places that I should submit this bug report?

Thanks,

--Randall

You have a Geforce in another machine and you haven't slammed that thing in there yet? Sheesh. I have to wait for one to arrive via FedEx to see if that fixes my (probable ATI related) issues. My backup machine is AGP so the card from that won't work in this one (PCI-E). Just do it and let us know if it works. If it does then we have a definite culprit for some of our woes.

You do have a point there. I should slap the TI4400 in and see what happens. If it still crashes, we know that there's even more deeply seated problems (perhaps related to AMD-based CPU's and chipsets)

I'll report my findings here.
