I've been thinking about the end of the world or the end of the human race. I'm making this topic because I want to see what peoples theories are and also if they believe in my theory.

Oh and for dummies, Apocalypse means the end of the world.

My theory:

There will be a huge war and Nuclear bombs and such will eliminate us all just because us humans are fighting over a chunk of Earth.

Perhaps a huge war and a lot of killing.

But because of a chunk of Earth? Come on!

That wont happen. It'll probably be something like one leader insults another leader.

And he wont apologies. And it starts with diplomatic fights, and ends up in real fights.

People are stunned by the situation, some people thinks he should apologies, while other thinks that he had the right to say it, because he was absolutely right.

Other thinks that apologying now will not be enough, he should pay some sort of lump sum, or face the consiquents.

The press is all over the story, and while people are taking sides, more fights between other people happens. Cause the situation between the nations was very pressed, and now it's fine thin border has been cracked.

At first, they will stop communicating, they wont be in a meeting where the other nation is.

And because of pressure towards both leaders by their people, they launch secret military operations in each country, but it's discovered by one of the nations. And all hell breaks lose.

Both nations having nuclear weapons, they start with a standard war, just troops, fleets and airforces. Soon it seems that both sides are strong enough, and meanwhile, more hatred has been spreading within each nations.

But the world is just gonna sit and watch, some nations are constantly asking them to stop it, and start speaking with each other, other nations takes sides, and some of them joins the war.

Suddenly one of the main nations launches a nuclear weapon at the other. A counter missile is send, and all hell breaks lose.

But, not because of a chunk of land, come on!

Who knows what will really happen to end the world? Maybe, like you guys said, a nuclear firefight will extinguish the human race. That won't be the end of the world, technically, because the world will still be there, it will just be the end of humanity.

Maybe, and I'm not saying I believe it, but perhaps another race from another planet could come in and literally destroy the world, although the chances of that happening are slim to none.

Perhaps, as religious people believe, the end of the world will come down in a fiery Apocalypse with the Horsemen and burning skies and the AntiChrist and all. I think that anyone of these possibilities would be interesting, to say the least.

Human Race - Nucleaur War. Pretty obvious, it will happen somehow and somtime it might sound sad but this is probably how its going down. This is a sad way to destroy mankind, but idiots these days just think they're too bad ass to apologize.

World - Either Asteroid (The Big One) or Sun Exlopdes and whipes everything out in our solar system. Wouldn't that be a view cry.gif !

Hopefully we can keep nuclear arms under wraps at least for a few more decades. The North Koreans are probably one of the biggest threats right now, and Bush seems to be awfully weary of Putin along with many others (then again, Bush knew for a fact Saddam had WMDs he never ended up having). I'm just saying that right now things are kind of tense, and many people say Putin is conspiracing to go back to communism, we can't forget that the Russian army is absolutely freaking huge. Anyways, last I heard North Korea was thinking about coming back to the bargaining table to negotiate in the "6-party talks" (of course they've said similar things a few times now). Hopefully the nuclear issue at this point in time will be taken care of and that the current world leaders of the world's countries are good honest people and will abide by any non-nuclear documents they might sign. If not, I will hope to God that we don't enter a nuclear war anytime soon. And I think it's uncertain right now what we're headed for. It's hard to see if the world is headed for damnation or if it's going to make a turn around. I'm hoping for a turn around, and hopefully the nuclear stuff will stay unused and unthought of.

The greatest catastrophies the world has a potential to face are: a nuclear war, an astroid, and a world recession. The economies of many countries are falling, whether or not the nations' most respected leaders want to admit it or not, times are getting tough. I already explained my view on a nuclear war. I think an astroid is the second likely thing to down us all. But I also remember watching a TV documentary where they're already at a point where they can predict the cycle of astroid for centuries to come and according to the documentary (circa 2000) we should "be safe" for another 50 years.

Who knows though. A nuclear holocaust would be horrible, hopefully we've put the right world leaders in their places and they'll do what's best for us the next coming years and decades. I also hope that slumping economies (especially like that of the US) can start rising again (like Chinas, China is like the world superpower of all economies right now - they're doing excellent). And as far as astroids, well, I guess I will take the documentary's word for it. No one knows except for the big guy upstairs - at least that's my take it on it.

Oh lord... dozingoff.gif

All you lot speculating on nuclear war... don't... just don't go there. You're so horribly wrong on the subject you might as well sign up to Bush' administration.

Nuclear weapons aren't a problem. Everyone is getting in a pissy-fit about Iran and N. Korea gaining nuclear status, but so unnecessarily. Give them nukes I say! Spread the nuclear power! It'll only lead to greater stability across the world, as well as in flashpoint regions.

Imagine if Taiwan had nukes. Would China intimidate them as much as they do? Would they fire missiles into splash zones around the island... course they bloody wouldn't. Why do you think India and Pakistan didn't go to war... cos they're both nuclear powers of course. They recognise the principle of MAD.

Mutually Assured Destruction. Even when nukes are in the hands of dictators (General Pervez Musharaff - Pakistans leader), they still recognise that their country would be destroyed if a nuclear war broke out. Where's the gain in that? What's the point?

Not a problem

Even if N. Korea and Iran did gain nuclear status - is it a problem. Nope.

1. Despite having a nuclear bomb, they'd lack the logistical ability to use it outside of the immediate region.

2. Both nations lack the economic power to build up a large nuclear stockpile - nukes are fvcking expensive to build and store in case you didn't know.

3. Why would they use it?! Lets say, hypothetically, they use a nuclear weapon on the US mainland. N. Korea/Iran might as well wave goodbye. Let's hypothetically say they use it on a neighbouring nation, perhaps a capitalist one. The action would receive worldwide condemnation, culminating in a joint effort by regional powers to punish the nation appropriately.

Democracy and globalisation

Throughout the entire post-war period, through all the cold wars, gulf wars, regional conflicts - not a single nuclear weapon has been used. As the world progresses and democracy spread to every corner of the world, globalisation and trade increasingly tie nations together in an international order. With each year that passes the chances of a nuclear outbreak decrease, and anyone who still believes that there will be a nuclear war that will end the world as we know it probably needs their head examined.

Cheers. smile.gif

Howdy Swarz,

There are two big problems with your logic:

1) You assume the people controlling the nukes will always act rationally.

This assumption is completely unwarranted. Even if every single world leader were completely sane, and wouldn't act desperately even if they were cornered, it is always possible for nukes to get stolen. The more countries with nukes, the larger the probability of either an insane leader or a terrorist group getting their hands on such a device. MAD logic certainly doesn't work on terrorists, since they, unlike nations, don't have a fixed return address, and they're much more likely to be psychotically trigger-happy anyway.

It's not just rouge nations which pose this threat, either. A few months back Donald Rumsfeld stated it was time to start thinking of nukes as tactical weapons (for use in combat), rather than strategic (for use as a deterrent).

2) You assume that accidents don't happen.

Nuclear weapons systems are not immune to faults and failures. With good engineering, you can make the mean time to failure of a system long, but on a long enough timeline the probability of disaster becomes a virtual certainty. The cost of accidentally firing a nuke would be hundreds of thousands innocent men, women, and children incinerated. Potentially tens of millions could die if the striken country retaliates, which is after all what MAD logic is all about.

Consider another scenario: a chunk of comet striking the earth would cause an explosion that looks a lot like a nuke going off. If it hit a country where tensions were high, would they really believe their enemies' denials? Wouldn't it be ironic if our response to a natural disaster would be collective suicide?

=====================

People often point to the Cold War as proof that MAD works. I look at it and I realize how unbelievably lucky we were to get away with our own stupidity for so long.

I acknowledge that argument, and it is indeed very valid. It is also however, very flawed.

It's a common tendency to imagine nations ruled by barbaric, maniacal leaders who have hundreds of tactical nuclear weapons at their finger-tips, but the real world just isn't Hollywood, and it doesn't work like that.

Only 7 nations in the world have nukes. Not all are democracies. China and Pakistan for example. Even with those crazy communists having nuclear capability - they've never used it. Even when Pakistan was at the brink of war with India over Kashmere - they never used nukes.

Further more, any nation ruled by a non-rational leader is not likely to be a democratic, developed nation. As such, it's unlikely that nation will have the economic or logistical capacity to stockpile nuclear weapons, let alone launch them over large distances. Even if, this leader did go bananas and launch a nuclear missile against another nuclear power, it would likely be only 1 or 2, and not nearly enough to bring the world into a full-scale nuclear conflict. Not to mention that the first strike of using a nuclear weapon would immediately turn global opinions against the offensive nation, sealing their fate. Hence, the principle of MAD holds true.

2) You assume that accidents don't happen.

Nuclear weapons systems are not immune to faults and failures. With good engineering, you can make the mean time to failure of a system long, but on a long enough timeline the probability of disaster becomes a virtual certainty. Potentially tens of millions could die if the striken country retaliates, which is after all what MAD logic is all about.

I agree, accidents do happen. But it seems foolish to me to believe that even in the lesser developed nuclear powers there is not strict control over their nuclear weapons. Despite all my reading, you cannot of course speculate on accidents, and this is an area that is simply a blur therefore.

Even if an accident did happen, a nuke was used and thousands, possibly millions killed... would it really cause a full scale nuclear conflict involving every part of the planet that would bring along apocalypse... ? confused.gif

Terror

Now, I'm not saying there won't be some kind of nuclear explosion in the future. I'm almost certain there will be. Whether somehow a terror group manages to explode a nuclear bomb within a target nation, or whether smaller-scale tactical nukes are used by the US against whoever falls under the radar of the axis-of-evil...

But I've read a whole heap of academic journals on this subject, and the fact is that the prospect of a full scale nuclear war that would result in the end of the world is pretty ridiculous. Even when you factor in 'crazy' leaders, it's still very unlikely.

I think, realisticly, the end of the world/human race, will occur beacuse of interplanetary reasons, or disease. Of all the war we've had on this planet, of all the crusades that conquered all of the known world at the time, we're still here.

However, look at the K event (not sure if that's the actual spelling, but when the astroid annihilated the dinasours). It took that massive astroid to wipe them out, and many scientists now speculate that not all of them were wiped out.

We as humans have also survived planetary disasters in our time. There was a time when scientists estimate there were only 3,000 homosapiens on the planet, but yet we still can bounce back.

For some reason humanity likes to toy with our own destruction, but in order to do that would be very hard as long as there is an Earth to promote human life. To destroy humanity, I believe you would have to destroy the Earth. Sure, nuclear winter could do that, but it's a question of whether or not we will eventually destroy the planet on our own by using nukes.

I don't know too much about nuclear war, but it seems to me that nuclear technology is more of a thread than it is a tactical thing. If I'm correct, which I may not be, the last time a nuclear bomb was used in war-fare was on Japan.

I think disease wil wipe out humanity first, however. All that really needs to happen, is for a strain of already existing viri that attacks too quick for our vaccines to be made. An epidemic of it will spread, and most of us would die. Of course, the actual scenario of this happening would be difficult to imagine, it's difficult for me to imagine every world leader going nuts and enciting nuclear war-fare. However, it doesn't seem too impracticaly for one of those astroids that zooms by our planet all the time to eventually hit us.

Taste Of Chaos

nah, the human race will always exist i think, yellowstonepark will kill many (this is the biggest threat becuase its 40,000 years overdue for an erruption, and when it goes off it will wipe out...well lets just say, the best part of the earths population, and the scary thing is, it could go off in the next five mins or in the next 5,000 years).

but hopefully it can keep it in for a few more decades then we should have found some way of protecting ourselfs, and if the worst comes to the worst, were all guna die one day!.

but i beleive that there will ALWAYS be survivors, no matter wat happens,

but the 1 to fear is december 25th 2012, the written end of the world,

only time will tell,
